We went up to the airport in Auckland tonight to pick somepne up. While we were waiting for them I refueled. Picked them up and started our drive back to hamilton 120kms away. After 5 mins the yellow picture of an engine came up on the dashboard. We stopped at the next station as we were on the expressway. Checked the book and it said it was engine emmissions motor fault. Checked oil water temp by feeling the radiator it was fine. I didn't want to go any further with the light on even though it felt fine so I rung up the AA breakdown service we are a member of. They came out within 30 mins and he checked then got his diagnistic tool out and plugged it in and it came up with a strange name, He looked it up and its the emmissions sensor. Checked some more and I remembered I'd seen it online that the fuel cap not tight enough could cause it. He checked that out after I pushed the fuel release and said it wasnt very tight even after he turned it until it clicked hard. I had posted here before about the fuel cap being so tight I had to lossen it with a spanner now it comes off with just a forceful twist.. So he cleared the error code and the light was off when we started again. Drove another 1.5 hrs to get home and it was fine no light on.
Calling MG service tomorrow to get it checked out. Scary when it comes on when you are on the highway !!

The engine light is on again this morning. booked into the dealers service dept for Tuesday.

I just read online that it could be vapour trapped after I filled up.
They suggested to leave the fuel cap off for 10 minutes.
I just did this and the engine light has disappeared off the dash :)

Had my mg phev back in the dealer today. They couldn't find any error codes ? the AA breakdown tech cleared the error so I could drive home, it musnt have a log saved of errors even though the light came on again the next day ? They did some updates of engine management software and told me to keep an eye on it to see if it happens again.

Check engine light on a petrol car is always the lambda sensor...... Dang that sensor had been bothering me since the first day I had a petrol car... ?

Hope mine doesn't act up....

The AA breakdown service I called out said it was the lambda sensor came up on his display as well. It may have been to full as I had just filled up and went past the first shutoff stop with petrol 30 mins before as when I left the cap off for 10 mins it cleared, which was strange and it hasn't done it since then. Although MG couldnt find any errors but they updated the software.

Not always, in fact it can be injectors, coil packs, crankshaft/cam position sensors, oil pressures etc. Most cars actually have two oxygen sensors - pre-catalytic and post catalytic convertor.

yes very true, the reason why I took the cap off for 10 mins as I had only just filled it up and overfilled it slightly (went past the first cutout ) it was strange though as once the breakdown callout cleared the codes, I drove home the rest of the way with no errors. then when I started it the next morning the warnings were back. then after searching online I took the cap off and let it vent for 10 mins and it was fine. MG service the next day couldnt find anything wrong and no error codes either. weird ??? but they did update the software which also stopped it for some people.
