FAQ 4 Etiquette when charging an MG5 at a Tesla Supercharger

There are some limitations when charging your MG5 at a Tesla Supercharger.

Remember you are not a Tesla!

Yes I know that but it is easy to forget that the MG5 charging port is in a different location. While the later V4 superchargers have longer leads the earlier ones can be a bit tight. The front centre position means that in most cases the MG can be driven nose first into the stall. With chargers on the side, The MG may need to stick out a little bit but this is not as big as a problem like the red BMW has!

No Teslas do not have BO!

The second less obvious one is that chargers are often paired so that two adjacent stalls share the same power supply. This is often referred to as an A/B setup. Typically Teslas try to maintain a one car distance from each other. Nothing to with Covid or the fact that they need more personal space or have a BO problem, but because an adjacent charging car will reduce the maximum charging for its neighbour that can be achieved because of the sharing. At busy times, this can't be helped but if the facility is empty, it is just good sense not to do it.

Don't charge above 80% as the charging rate drops

Another point which is common to all DC Rapid chargers. The charge rate drops and it will take a long time to get that few extra percent. It is far better to stop at 80% and then drive on for a quick "splash and dash" at the more normal rates. This is particularly useful if the location is busy as it improves the throughput.

It can take the same time to get from 20-80% as it does to get from 80-100%
