Free Tesla supercharger update from MG dealerships

Hi - I was charged £144 by Arnold Clark in Seafield, Edinburgh. They checked with MG UK, who told them that this is a chargeable service.

Then I tried to charge my ZS EV at a Tesla supercharger (authorised for non-Tesla vehicles), and the app returned with a "Vehicle not authorised"
MG UK do not charge for the Tesla fix. It is the dealership who decide to charge you for the technicians time. Therefore, by inference, if you are paying for a technicians time at a service, the fix should be free.

The fix was promised by Tesla after MG, VW and JAG all experienced problems. They stated that they had to change their software to address the problem. They promised a fix in a few weeks but it didn't happen. Subsequently they started to blame MG and blocked them. There was no Tesla fix as such.
I don't think Tesla promised to do anything. Where did they say this?

Its in the Time line FAQ. Reported in Dec 2022 by an MG5 owner to the forum.
A different member had a similar reply later which he reported back in April 2023. Again in the timeline.

It references a report from a phone call to Tesla..

Dubious to say the least given that the only party that were doing any fixes were MG, and that I had my car patched and working before that that date ! ??

Around 18 months ago when I found my MG5 trophy would not charge on the then recently opened to all Tesla Superchargers I contacted Tesla by Email and telephone, and was told by Tesla that some MG models did not meet the Supercharger protocol and only MG could sort out this issue and advise me to talk to my MG dealer that’s when I began pushing MG UK to look into the problem.

As you probably all know a few months later they agreed to fit this if owners requested it and said speak to your dealer who can do the update FOC to the owner and MG would reimburse them for doing so.
So after Miles Robert’s had spoken with them about the issue on our behalf that’s what began to happen and several members here including myself had the update done, sadly that lasted for only a couple of weeks before they MG changed there tune and started to say this was an enhancement and it was down to dealers to do the update MG I presume only now supplying the dealership with information as to what they needed to do for the updates, this was most disappointing to myself and Miles who agrees with me this is totally wrong but at this moment that’s the way it looks.

In answer to the question my car was updated FOC by Chorley MG in February at the Chorley branch.

I remember one forum member posting he had been in contact with the ombudsman service about this very issue, but can’t remember who it was are what the outcome was so who ever it was if you read this can you please update the forum thank you.

It was me that has put the matter to the ombudsmen (2022 ZSEv) It has agreed to take on the case, but has still not yet considered the substance. Must be 9 months now, and they don't respond to chasing emails. If only there was an ombudsmen to oversee ombudsmen.

Take it or leave it. That was what was reported in the forums.
I don't understand the grief some are giving you. You spent time and effort compiling a timeline based on other forum members posts and then your efforts re the content of others are questioned. ?‍♂️

Well I for one thank you for your efforts.

Hi and thank you for the post pity nothing has happened and quite strange I think, I’m sure there is a time span in which they are meant to report back to a complainant.

Maybe if some others where to go down the same route and file a complaint with the ombudsman service it might wake them up and wake MG up as a result.

Not a bad idea Les. If Rutsy could post how he contacted the ombudsman, we could all file a complaint en mass.

Alan.

I googled vehicle ombudsmen and filled out the form. From recollection the basis of the complaint was that: - i had a reasonable expectation that the vehicle should be useable on any compatible charger and I also had a reasonable expectation that any updates should be free of charge particularly in the first year. When I put the final case I will also be arguing that given the car was supplied after Tesla chargers were opened and I was not told the car would not be compatible with those chargers, it was misleadingly described.

Found it, thanks.

As there are a few threads about this, if you have received a free Tesla supercharger update, please post the name, address and contact details of the dealership which performed it.

Edit moderator: Added "supercharger" to the thread title.

MG ZS EV Trophy LR 2024 -
updated free May 24

Should also note though that this was done at the same time that non working V2L was also fixed FOC and there was a history behind this. I'd been told before purchase that V2L was working but then found out after purchase it wasn't. So this naturally perhaps became a FOC fix later and I sneaked in the request to get the Tesla Supercharger update applied at the same time.

Whether this means Palmers would apply the Tesla fix on demand FOC for others may well depend on whether MG would meet the cost for this I suspect.

Purchased my MG ZS EV Trophy LR September 2023 from Threeways, Abergele, North Wales
Had it's first service 2 September 2024. I inquired whether they do the Tesla update and they said yes, but would cost £119 including VAT. Extremely disappointing, considering how much we paid for the car. I didn't bother with the update and will just live without using the cheaper Superchargers.
As a side note, from the nearly 5000 miles covered in the first year, we only charged away from home 9 times and our price per mile is just over 4 pence per mile. I calculated that using the Tesla superchargers on the same routes would have saved around £45 over the 9 charges.

So it would take you almost 3 years to recoup the cost of getting the update ... probably a wise choice. :)
It’s not just about cost.

It’s about reliable options.

It sets a bad precedent for cars not to be compliant to a standard.
