Frozen Charging Port Door? (Flap)

It is not an ice or frozen flap problem for me as it NEVER snows or the temperature drop to zero C/ 32°F……..I live in the sub tropics of Queensland………The fault is currently a mystery to my local dealership and they are still trying to identify it. The very important fact is that I/we should not have to have tools to pull the charge port flap/door apart to fuel up an/my expensive car (Cyberster) It is definitely a design error to not provide a manual override for an all electric/electronic piece of kit…….it ain’t going anywhere if you can't put fuel in it……..will update when I get my car back from the experts.

Does this manual override not work on your Cyberster? Or is your flap/door not unlocking?

This is a release for the charging cable, not the flap over the charging port. When you put the cable into the port and start charging, the car locks the cable to prevent anyone else removing it. When you unlock the car after charging is complete, the cable lock is released. Sometimes (rarely - and in my experience never) this doesn't work. The emergency release cable is there to let you manually release the cable.

The flap (door) covering the charge port is different - it stops anyone accessing the charge sockets when the car is NOT charging. Quite why anyone would want to do that is a mystery to me. It's held closed by a solenoid, and it's this which sometimes fails to release the flap. Unless the flap is released, you can't charge your car.

My answer (MG5 facelift) was to remove the locking pin, meaning the flap can't be locked. I no longer have to worry about it! You would have to check that the Cyberster flap will stay closed without being locked.

Since replacing the charging door (see thread Charging door sensor malfunction) the door is now always locked after a drive, while it used to be always unlocked. Therefore I have to lock the car and unlock it again for it to open every time, causing unnecessary wear and tear. Also the port's blue lights are not lit when the door is open - only after plugging in they slowly fade in.

Thanks for the feedback & yes ReintjeWA the charger plug manual release is the same in the Cyberster……….doesnt solve the charger door not opening at the most inconvenient time when it is suggested that you disassemble the charger door in order to plug in………sorry not the answer for a A$124,000 car……albeit the top of the MG Range 🤬 Has to be a design oversight that needs a modification to manually override the electric locking……I can’t accept the faulty spigot idea ‘cos that didn’t work and neither did replacing the solenoid…….Electrical signal or computer brain problem……Should be a doddle for the experts………my previous post with the dripping tap was a joke………an ex-spurt is a drip…..get it?

Don't know if yours is the same as the MG4 but mine was a little sticky. I freed it by cleaning the moving parts with a contact cleaner then, when it was all dry, I squirted a bit of silicone lubricant into the relevant areas. Been smooth as silk since. I squirted a bit into the little latch that's surrounded by the rubber sleeve as well.
WD40 make contact cleaner and silicone lube - don't use the normal WD40 stuff though, that's not a lubricant.
I've also noticed that I have to press on the middle right of the hatch, right above the plunger, to open it, pressing on a corner does nothing.
