I'm with Octopus now - what EV charger do you chaps think is best?

So here's the right Haantjeslei charger and it says
Available 38.2 mi / hour 12.7 kW (AC)
Type 2
12.7kW sounds like a 400V 20A supply with about an 18.5A limit. So basically it's an 11kW EVSE (AC "charger"). If you really can get one third of 12700W, that's 4200W.

Maybe when you are checking the power into the traction battery, you have the heater on and a lot of computers. The MG4 reports what goes into the 400V battery. I would think that if you turn off the heater and lock the car, the overheads should be moderate, say 500W max. So that should still leave some 3.7kW into the battery for that "charger". But I suspect that the 12.7kW figure is highly inflated.

That's one of the limitations of driving a UK spec MG vehicle (most of them single phase) in a three phase continent like Europe.

I had a 'moment of clarity' about this v slow kW charge rate: if I don't set a time limit from the MG, does the car's charging system think 'Well, for max battery health we go real slow like a granny charger' and proceeds to charge at v low speed. What do you think chaps? Breaktrhough or brainstorm?

No, I'm sure that's not the issue. The issue is why your car has so little left for real charging after loads and losses, when you are charging with at least 3.6 kW, possibly over 4 kW.

I wasn't aware of this feature. Is it on the MG ismart app?

I don't think that an AC charge is ever going to be a problem for a battery.

However, I guess this feature could be useful in order to avoid idle fees - slow the charge down so it doesn't finish before you will return to the car.

Wish I had thought of this at our holiday cottage last year, instead of getting up at 5am to unplug the car to avoid getting charged.

Sadly not available in iSmart, I'm currently using the option to soak up some of the meagre solar excess.
