Thank you for your help. I am an absolute novice at all things electrical, I read the posts on this forum and don't understand most of it. I have looked at the charger and it seems that I do have an L2 and L3 slot. I think I have a fast charging point at Gatwick services, shall I try that? Is that DC as opposed to AC which is at home? will that nudge CCU into working? Much appreciate your attention to this little challenge. I was just thinking, the car did go off on the back of a lorry to have a new door fitted - i had a fight with the garage door - and came back on a lorry. It was 100% charged then, but it hasn't charged properly since. Anything to do with my current problem do you think?
If you've got those extra pins it means you have the 3 phase on-board charger (and no rear wiper?). Unfortunately this model is liable to CCU failure which needs doing at the dealer.

The usual symptoms are it will start charging and stop fairly soon on any AC charger (granny or 7/11kW) It should still work on any rapid/ultra rapid DC CCS charger.

There is a thread on this on the site

I have got the trophy with no rear windscreen wiper, so it looks as though I have got an issue with the CCU, especially as I have just fast charged it at Gridserve. I can feel an email to the garage coming on. Many many thanks to all those that helped, much appreciate this forum. As someone said it would be good if the ev mechanics read these.

Good luck @campbell taylor, it is a pain having to wait for the garage but at least you can DC charge in the meantime.

When you take it in:
  • Write down the tests you have done on paper and leave it in the car for the technician to read.
  • Insist that whatever they do to fix it, they leave it charging on AC for over an hour to test it before they give it back to you.

Be prepared that they might want to try software updates first and this might not fix it - so this is why you need to insist the garage test it, not give it back just for you to test it to find out it still doesn't work.

If they replace the CCU, check that the car still respects the charge limiter setting (eg 80% health mode) on the battery screen. If it doesn't and always charges through to 100%, you need some more software updates after having the CCU changed.

Good luck.

I drove the car to a nearby chargeplace Scotland slow charger to test if it was an issue with the Zappi or car. The car was at 70% when I plugged it in. The slow charger was charging at 6kW, which is a little less than the Zappi, but I was prepared to wait until reaching 100%. However, 1% later the charge stopped, just like it has been doing with the Zappi...
We have two MG4 Trophys and one developed the faults you've described. A faulty CCU was at fault and replaced by the dealer under warranty. All is fine now.

Morning all,
Sorry to revive an old thread.
Currently sat awaiting approval from MG to replace the CCU on my 2022 MG4 Trophy LR following a sudden inability to accept AC charge
Morning, annoying that the dealerships have to go to China for approval, it must be abundantly clear that this is not fixable by software update by now. Hopefully the wait won't be too long.

Sorry to hear you've been bitten by this one. Approval should be simple assuming your garage confirms the problem.

When they fit the new one, make sure they thoroughly test it and have applied all the software patches including making sure it still obeys the 80% charge limit (or whatever you set it to).

Getting them to test it will save you being the tester - in my case 3 trips to resolve after CCU fitting because they weren't testing it properly.

Best of all I'd write down the tests you'd like them to do and hand to the technician/ leave in the car and make sure they agree to check.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions.
Stoneacre in Middlesbrough have been very efficient with me having already replaced the driver's door handle.
I'll ask them to run a series of tests when I get it booked in for replacement.
They did all the firmware updates on the existing unit to prove it was DoA.

Out of interest has anyone had eyes on one of these dodgy CCUs ? do we know the make and model etc?
I might push my luck with Stoneacre and ask to see the old part when mine gets fixed

Good to hear that they looked after you properly - I might just try them for my next service as the previous dealer (about 15 miles to the west of Boro) are liars and totally incompetent.

They seem to have a very cookie cutter approach. Before I bought my car I had a good mooch around their showroom examples etc (then bought online from far away as it was within budget and well under miles) booked in just before Christmas to replace the door handle and it was done with no fuss at all.
Called them to book in for the charging issues on the 21st of December just before office closing and they couldn't have been more helpful, so I have everything crossed to get the charger fixed

Sounds just like my car... I had the driver door handle replaced too (button to lock/unlock got jammed and stopped working) and then had to the CCU replaced after numerous software attempts & other bits being replaced.

Fingers crossed it fixes it for you.

Cheers Blue. I'm calling the dealership today to see if they have any progress from MG on authorising the replacement.
Been enjoying driving the car with the snow but charging is getting expensive now.

Update time.
Stoneacre have finally been given the go-Ahead to warranty replace the CCU by MG. Booked in for Wednesday so will hopefully be back to normal motoring
