Lane assist help

It's not the existence of LKA we object to, it's the aggressiveness of the default ELK
+1.

I also object to the fact this “safety feature” is in fact dangerous and not required, the only people I ever saw that needed “lane assist” were muppets on their phone whilst driving.

In principle I agree with Dan C , but if we are all honest we all can be accused of muppetry however infrequent at some stages in our driving lives. There is a minority ,the percentage you can decide , who we all recognise as being, frankly dangerous, who for a multitude of reasons are on the roads in our midst. Youtube videos put these idiots worldwide and as the car industry is global , governments around the world have decided that the industry and its safety bodies have to do something about it. So we are where we are , for now! Lets be thankful that at least we can turn off some of these systems, its not going to be long before these system (and then some ) will be permanently factory enabled if not for our cars , for future models. A bit of a worry if you lease and change your car every three years. As Peter Kay says its the future, and its not garlic bread.

I've had my moments with LKA (lat3st software). And yesterday I had another one. The highway splits into a north and west route. North and west are separated by white blocks. Passing the white blocks driving in a straight line LKA takes over and forces me into the lane next to me.
It solved itself because I passed the blocks quickly. But it really took me by surprise.
Of course I should have disabled ELK. But I forgot because the mechanic first had a test drive after which I simply jumped in. Then the warning to disable ELK at startup doesn't work...

More worrying is the fact that circumstances may change rapidly, demanding to disable Lane assist immediately (manual instructions).

Just one out of many examples.
An insertion strip is separated from safety strip using a solid white line. However, during rush hour the insertion strip may be used as an extra rush hour lane. So, coming from the insertion strip and going straight onto the rush hour lane ELK sees the solid line and simply steers your MG into the lane next to you.
This event is reported multiple times in my country. It fits the description where MG claims the safety system may fail. But there is no push button to disable ELK immediately. Until this button or voice command arrives I will continue to disable this 'safety feature' at startup.

Besides, Alert and LDW mode are more than sufficient.

I agree. Disable at startup. And if, as happened to me this evening, the disable didn't take, then turn it off as you drive as soon as possible before it starts to get any ideas.

Hi I keep turning my lane assist off on my MG4 but every time I turn car on the next day the lane assist is back on? is this correct? is there a way of keeping it off?
I’ve not found a way of switching it off permanently. I believe it resets to satisfy the ncap ratings. Removing safety standards is then by the driver’s discretion.

I did note it was also turning itself back on during g my journey, a neighbour with the same car found a hack going into the settings and turning screen brightness to full rather than leaving it on auto. When it automatically changes to the conditions outside it resets the lane assist and forward collision. Change mine and it’s been fine since

There is an update to solve this.

Yeah it's a bug. I think if you leave it in light or dark mode rather than auto it stops it as the switch between re-sets it if you don't have the bug fix.

I've just received this email from Which? I thought you might be interested.
I must admit, this MG4 ER is much better than the LR. You can tone down the ELK to just giving you a gentle vibration in the steering wheel.

It's just getting into the routine at pre-launch.

Or just MG making it work as it should

Oh boy - I've only had the car a few days and I already have a rant prepared...

LKA (steering interference) and that laughably useless speed limit recognition nonsense are re-enabled when you put your foot on the brake pedal. I turn LKA off because it reacts to almost everything on the road, even arrows painted on the road confuse it, and I'm sick and tired (already) of the beeps and steering wheel tugs. The current implementation is still not fit for purpose. To me, steering wheel tugs/vibration/whatever you want to call it, feels like something breaking on the car - I hate it.

IMO there are other strange design decisions with the software.
The auto-headlights, for instance. That totally unnecessary feature bug gets re-enabled every time you start the thing. We have a number of railway bridges in the area, every time I go under one, the bloody headlights come on for a few seconds even in bright sunlight. Other cars do this but I've never had one where it gets re-enabled every time it's started.
Speaking of headlights - I wonder who's bright idea it was to have the car light up like a Christmas tree when you unlock it. I unlocked the car last night to open the charge port cover so I could plug it in and the thing lit up half the neighbourhood - totally unnecessary, but no way to prevent it. Why doesn't it use the 'follow me home' setting for that.

It's not a bad car by any means, in fact it's a nice size and is actually fun to drive - it's just let down by the inconsistent and sometimes frustrating software. That, at least, is not too hard for the manufacturer to fix - so there is hope lol

Are you disabling LKA and other systems after you have put the car in ready mode? If you disable them before you are in ready mode they switch back on when you hit the brake pedal.

Agree with everything you have gripes about, the problem is there are updates for most of those things to make them behave better, but MG couldn't give a toss and won't be proactive and roll it out to everyone.
Their software is so flaky that a potential fix by utilising OTA updates will never happen.
Just keep your fingers crossed and hope you don't need to visit a service department st that really is like Russian roulette, you might get a good one but you never know chances are you will get the norm, an inability to make decisions for themselves without running it by MG first and a argument to try and do updates

No problem with LKA, always on for me. Simple, get in, touch brake pedal, into 'D' and drive away. No over analysis, car drives superbly.
As I've said several times it's great your car is working and I also said there are fixes/updates for everything. The problem is getting MG UK and dealers to do the right updates.

The fact they aren't and numerous people are still experiencing issues doesn't mean there isn't a problem still. This isn't cured by reading the manual or caused by user error as you have alluded too before

It's a pity it's not cured by you telling us how perfect your car is, in every thread people are discussing issues. We would all have perfect cars. Unfortunately it's not hence the discussions.
