Lane Assist Trying To Kill Me!

I have had the same experience
I was nearly killed the other day facing the same experience you had .I have refused to drive the car until MG ADMIT there is a major defect in there lane assistant management system.
My ER runs the latest software (EU only has R46) but it is no longer that harsh anymore. However, the error rate is still way too high in ELK and LDA. So I always run Alert mode and disable the beep. No more pulling the wheel, no more irritating irrelevant beeps. Because the system fails to work in regular circumstances (e.g. it hates double lines), the only downside is you cannot rely on it. So I drive the car like it isn't there. But if the wheel resonates, I take it as a hint.

Inappropriate language/mild swearing/circumventing the swear filter
This is a massive thread and I've not gone back too far, so this may have already been said.

Just had my first service and was updated to R59.

The LKA is now very much more, 'hands off' than it was previously. (R46)

It is also more likely to just beep a warning, instead of instantly tugging the wheel.

I will still turn it off though, as with living in the countryside and roads that get narrow, occasionally you need to move towards the hedges/bushes at the side of the road.

You almost have to "dip' a mirror into the grass if something like a tractor is coming the other way, at speed, and wants too much of the road.

(Madly, some of these behemoths are pulling slurry trailers driven by 16 year olds, and can legally weigh up to 31t!!!)

Depending on the speed, this can prompt the car to try and steer into danger.

And herein lies the problem.

The car sees the side of the road as a problem,
but not the bloody great tractor that is also inbound!!

I would like to congratulate @Bricktop X PWR for getting the warning triangle for inappropriate language etc. circumnavigating the swear filter ?

Unfortunately I think all of us can relate to the frustration caused by this unneeded piece of technology. It wouldn't be so bad if it was consistent so we know that these particular road markings, verges etc. would activate the wheel grab so we would be ready for it.

It's not just an MG problem. Owners are also complaining about Seats and Mazdas amongst others.

I mean, is it any wonder the system is prone to struggle in the 'real' world?

Below is a picture of the road they used for evaluating the LKA for the NCAP rating.

Ummm.

Depends. The fact that they show only this one does not have to mean they did not test it in others. I will dig up the protocol and check it tonight.

Here's the latest test document:

Interestingly, the EU law itself refers to the roads conditions :
for solid line and dashed lane markings in line with one of those described in Annex 3 (Visible lane markingidentification) to Regulation No 130 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) –Uniform provisions concerning the approval of motor vehicles with regard to the Lane Departure WarningSystem (3) and other markings expected on EU roads;

This regulation describes testing situations much more elaborate than the single picture, or in the ncap document.

Someone has just posted on Facebook that MG have finally acknowledged a dangerous fault with FCS and LKA. Their MG has just had its service and his dealer has told him there will be a software update to sort this out soon and MG4 owners will be contacted by letter to bring their cars in for the update.
How true this is I don't know

Looks like the car behind was not keeping a safe distance, and will be culpable for the shunt. Undoubtably there are some false stops and some cars appear to be over sensitive, however it is usually the car behind that will be done for not driving with due care and attention? Without proper detail the writer could be right, it could have been much worse, if the car had not stopped perhaps there would have been a much worse accident that she was not aware (or not letting on).

In my experience there's not many drivers that do. I wonder if driving schools teach the safe distance rules. Get their pupils to experience real world braking distances, and their reaction times.

I often feel obliged to leave enough distance for not only my safe braking distance but also for the car behind.

It's on Fakebook, so must be true. ?

This was discussed on our latest podcast and confirmed by Miles, there will be a letter to all owners for a free update most likely to be done at the next service - note this is not a safety recall as LKA/ELK is considered a driver assistance system, not a safety system.

I'm keeping my AEB off, will get them to look at it again the next time the car goes in to the dealer and see if they can recalibrate.

Mine occasionally slams on the brakes when turning right with oncoming traffic at low speed.

To be fair, I have had exactly the same problem with my two prior VAG group ICE cars.

Several phantom AEB events for my wife over the past few months (including where a following lorry stopped inches from the rear of the car). She does around 50 miles a day in urban and country environment with multiple stops (time limited) so just doesn't have the time to switch it off 15+ times a day.

Complained to the dealer - there was an update to Front Detection Radar module released in early May aimed at reducing these phantom braking episodes so car is booked in in Sept for an update. Pretty pissed off that we get no notifications of these available improvements, especially when relating to safety. For this reason alone we'd never buy another MG product.

MG do seem to have a cavalier attitude to the 'driver assistance systems'. You would have hoped with Which being involved and saying its the worst car they have tested in this area that they would be keen to resolve but clearly they have no concern for owners safety.

I had this one in June. No unneccesary braking since ..

While that is most likely the case, it was a completely unnecessary emergency braking manoeuvre conducted by the car which has resulted in damage, cost and inconvenience to the owner which should never have occurred. The repair times are looking like they are insanely long due to lack of parts plus a loss of insurance status / increased risk rating / higher insurance premiums for years to come. Just because the software is shite.

It is staggering that despite all the negative press and customer complaints that this is still going on.

I've had my car a full year now and it slammed on approaching a parked car the first week I had it.
A complete WTF moment if it's never happened to you before.

It's never done it since despite many similar traffic situations.

Two updates later, and the most it will do now in a similar situation is Beep a warning if I'm driving, or slow the car, if in ACC.

How do you turn lka off? I can't find a way in mg pilot menu. No reference to lsk

You have to put the car in ready mode first (foot on brake) for it to appear. Then scroll down. It rests when you leave ready mode.
