MG3 Hybrid+ Luxury
Hi everyone,

I've read that the MG3 Hybrid+ comes with both ACC and Traffic Sign Recognition, but I'm not sure if these systems work together to automatically adjust the speed. It would be really convenient if the car could automatically slow down or speed up based on the road signs it detects.

If anyone has experience with this feature in the MG3 Hybrid+ or knows for sure how it works, I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hmmm.. until you try to overtake a truck like this on your Autobahn!

In my previus VW ID.3, the combination of ACC and Traffic Sign Recognition worked really well. It consistently adjusted the speed based on detected road signs, and I ended up using ACC for about 80% of my driving.

According to the manual it has a smart speed adaption. Wouldn't want to use it as the speed recognition does not work 100% reliable.
Sorry, currently I just have the German version ... The EN can be found somewhere in the forum.

yes, the function is great. when you drive on a road where the speed limit is 80 km/h and at a junction the speed limit is 30 km/h and the car suddenly brakes. Irony off
Then it's just not well implemented. The ID.3 knew that a 30 km/h sign was coming up at X meters and already slowed down slightly beforehand, so that the car would be driving exactly 30 km/h when reaching the sign.

I don't want to unnecessarily spread this discussion as it might be off topic, but with VW, Mercedes, BMW and all the other brands I have heard and experienced other stories (the classic situation here in Germany: we drive on a highway without a speed limit. The vehicle recognizes the speed of the exit and slows down real quick). But experiences etc. might be different. For me personally, the function is only applicable in urban areas or if you're exploring new places.
Apart from talking about different price categories...
/End off topic

I apologize. 😬

There are vehicles that compare the traffic signs with the speed information in the sat nav in order to avoid false alarms. But this still happens, especially at construction sites, where the systems are then overwhelmed because constantly changing traffic signs appear on different parallel lanes.

For example, in a construction zone you can drive 80km/h on the left and only 60km/h on the right. It can then happen that the car gives way to the sign on the right-hand side or gets totally confused if both signs appear parallel.

Might be true, but how often does that really happen? As I said, I used the feature on every drive, and it worked well. It just needs to be implemented properly. If you look at something as simple as the language translation into German in the infotainment system, there's clearly no proper quality control. Apparently, the same applies to the MG Group's assistance systems. I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed.

Agree... but in the UK the starting price of the ID.3 is nearly £31,000 after a recent £5,000 reduction. The MG3 Hybrid starts at just £18,500. Quite a different league IMHO. And I guess these are the areas that get less development effort put into.

The option doesn't exist, does anyone see the option on their MG3?

MG Pilot - set LIM and it will limit speeds.
Activate with steering wheel button.
It will limit speeds and slow down or brake after a new lower limit is recognized.

Ah, yes i got it, but that doesn’t work together with ACC. The LIM setting is simply a speed limiter. So, the car doesn’t have the function to automatically adjust the speed in ACC according to traffic signs, even though all the prerequisites are there... What a shame.

My New Zealand MG3 Hybrid Essence has ACC, and recognises speed signs when it can see them. However it does not change its ACC speed to match the speed signs - that's a job for the Driver. ACC seems to rely on the two front cameras (one on the bonnet and one in the top of the windscreen), and can get a bit confused on corners or if you're changing lanes, because it always sees straight ahead, so if it sees into a gap that appears between cars ahead of you it can think the way is clear and respond accordingly.

Speed sign recognition relies on the same 2 cameras, and slips up with signs in unusual places around road works, or if they're overhead on a high gantry.

While these MGs are amazingly helpful, they still need a driver to pay almost as much attention as is needed in cars without all this fancy kit. If you don't want to do that, you'll need to move to a place where things are set up for driverless cars. What you really can pretty much forget about is your MG's automatic wipers and lights: they work really well!
