MG ZS EV has no under-engine bay splash shield

For those on Facebook, Miles is a member of the MG Electric Vehicle Owners Club group which is quite active and has some useful posts (although a lot are duplicated here).

Hi Folks,
I have sent a private message to Miles just to request him to contact me. I have not I mentioned that we will like him to join here. I have previously had some personal contact with him and others from Chorley group. I will update you when Miles makes contact.
I agree with all the comments about Facebook. I try to keep off FB.

My views on FB are just that, my opinion. I know some people can't get enough of it.

I Folks,
Under-engine splash shield update!!!
Been in contact with Miles and a other EV Buffins. ...
Outcome.....
Miles confirms there seems to be a under-engine splash shield present under the ZS EV. Only problem here is a big aeration hole in the middle making it look as if there is no shield. I will look at sending more images. I have asked if this shield can be replaced with the ICE MG ZS shield which has no hole and I will update as and when that information is available. This is likely to be after the lock down I think.

So not sure what you folks think but this is a super aeration hole. Why does the electric engine need so much air?

My EV Buffins are advising not to spend money on this under-engine shield at present rather wait and try feeding back to MG en- block ie get all the over 1000 UK owners to individually write to MG complaining about this issue and may make some social and mainstream media noise. They are of the opinion a very cheap easy fix could be forth coming then.

Hmm... The lower front grilles on our cars, along with the periphery around the charging port in the main grille let in a lot of airflow through the radiator at speed. I very much suspect the large "hole" is to allow the exit of this air flow. The question that needs to be addressed before filling these holes up is where will the airflow go then?

Looking at the photo it would appear that the gear/reduction box is the main beneficiary of the aeration hole. My Hybrids have an oil to water heat exchanger to cool the gearbox although they are CVTs. Having said that, the hole does look a bit to large and still no wheel arch splash guard.

There won't be much dirt getting in through that hole, being in the centre, but a suitable wheel arch addition might be nice :)

I agree with all the comments made. I am told retro fitting a wheel arch splash guard and a finned aeration plate is the way forward. We should however proceed with these modifications only when we understand why these are absent in the first place.

Totally agree because there must be a reason for not fitting already developed parts!

Hi Guys,
Been trying to get to the bottom of this issue and what I am finding is not good.
My EV Buffins are now doing my head in with too much information.
I am becoming worried that MG has made"DOODLES " of us in getting us to buy the MG ZS EV.
I must admit, I just liked the look of the car and how it felt on the test drive. The price and the few details such as range were not the best but I thought were acceptable.
So I bought the ZS EV but now I am becoming aware that there is in fact a lot more that one should look at with EVs, and one of those is the state of the underside.
I do not know whether any of you checked the underside of the ZS EV before buying but I did not. It turns out that for EVs it is very foolish not to have done an underside check.
Did you all know that to achieve the best fuel efficiency, protection and durability the underside of an EV should be completely covered?
Well, do any of you know if any of the manufacturers of EVs are able to achieve near 100% underside cover ? ? ? Tesla in model 3
I am re-checking the information I am getting and when I know that all the information is right/ true, I will share it with you. I must say however that at present I am very worried that if I knew what I know now, then I would not have bought the ZS EV.
I am finding this absolutely disheartening.
I would be grateful if you all double up you efforts to investigate and understand this issue and how we can make the best out of what seems a bad design situation on part of MG.

Whilst I understand what your saying and perhaps efficiently could be improved what are the other downsides...we do have a 7 year warranty if anything goes wrong...personally I’m still really pleased with my purchase and perhaps MG will review these elements and make adjustments to improve the vehicle going forwards even if as optional accessories for those that have already purchased. Happy that I’ve got a lot of car for the money; that said only time will tell, but at present compared to my Volvo XC90 I’m saving a fortune on fuel, road tax, ULEZ and congestion charge.....
