MG4 - First UK dealer hands on photos and specifications

I'm with you. To clarify, I'd do away with LCA and AEB from MG Pilot, Sat Nav, and the Auto controls for Main Beam, Headlights, and Wipers as well. All of this nannying removes my enjoyment and is often plain wrong not just in my MG5 but also in other significantly more expensive cars.

On the "what I would like" list I'd add features from my Wife's 8 year old LEAF - an onboard charge and heating timer, the facility to limit charge (to 80%), heated rear seats, a light in the centre of the roof and in the boot, led headlights, a programmable App with a published and maintained API. Why do MG give us new toys of limited value and not things of proven use?

The days of having to include the latest fashionable toys on EVs is gone with the MG4 and MG5's ICE challenging prices - now just give us the features that we need.

I'd forgotten all about those lenses! I now recall seeing a lot of them back in the 80's. Mind you, back then cars were often sold on having larger glass area for better rear vision, whereas now, rear glass has shrunk to next to nothing on many cars, once you add in 3 headrests, you can often see next to nothing! Maybe all cars really should be mandated to need rear cameras. At a production scale level they cost peanuts to include.
But peanuts cut into profits!

I know all Hyundai i10( bottom model range)has rear camera fitted as std but no sensors.
Probably rear camera across the whole range!

It's probably cheaper to fit a single camera than four ultrasonic sensors assuming that the headunit already has the necessary programming.

Yes, I had one on my Renault Megan Scenic which with such a chopped-off rear end there was a massive blind spot. I do appreciate the reversing camera on current and a few of the most recent cars. I found most of the 360-degree modes on the Loaner ZS Facelift I have had a couple of times I didn't find the 3D views particularly useful TBH. However, in poor light cameras did seem to work again and the ability to switch to side or front cameras is useful in the supermarket car parks and to avoid the grinding of Alloy rims.

So they don't supply charging cable and how much for a charging point for home charging?

They supply the 3 pin plug type charger but not a type 2 cable. You'll only need that cable if you either choose an untethered home charger or you use one of the usually free chargers in supermarkets etc.

For a home charger, it depends on which model you choose. Have a look at Compare Home EV Chargers and Get An Installation for an idea on prices

Assuming that you even need a home charge point ......

How many miles a week do you do?

What are the servicing costs? I see that BYD in New Zealand and Australia have set really high costs. I can’t see why servicing costs for an EV should be high, there is literally nothing to service except for coolant but that’s after quite a few yrs.
I've had approximate servicing costs from my MG dealer for the MG4 - approx £90 for 1st and 3rd and out £150 for 2nd and 4th. Obviously this will change our time and with dealer/area.

I'm very interested in hearing about test drives in rainy conditions, especially for the non-Trophy models. Whether the lack of a rear wiper is an issue or not, driving in rain or driving just after rain.

I was in Sainsbury's last night after a bit of a downpour and saw a few people in sporty cars having to manually wipe their rear screens before driving off.

I'd be interested too - I can see rain running straight down the gap in the middle. My current car has no rear wiper - I cannot tell you what a ball ache it is. And it's not just in rainy conditions... I'd say summer months with tree sap, droppings and everything else that you can't just wash off using the pull of a stalk, is more of a pain.

Yes, there are glass treatments you can use however I've not found one that's truly as effective as being able to wash the window - especially if you need to clear the screen on the move. The spoiler on the MG4 being continuous with a hidden style wiper beneath it would've been great.

Looking at photos of the MG4, doesn't it have quite a sloping rear window, so there might not be the need for a rear wiper, compared to the ZSEV which has a more upright rear window.

Agreed, just like a my Hyundai Tucson with a hidden wiper. I test drove an Ionig 5 in the rain which doesn't have a rear wiper and said no way to SUV type rear bodywork which dumps spray onto the rear window which you can't clear with a wiper on the move.

It's not just water that gets on the screen, but lots of grime from the road including oily remains from hydrocarbon fuels. I can see water running off but some things sticking.

Many saloons lack a rear wiper and people cope fine. As others have suggested, frequent use of a rain repellent is a good option, should you feel you need it, but it may be that the rear screen remains clear enough on it's own.
