MG4 Lane keep assist

Updating this with latest chat with my dealer:

So it's a waiting game at the moment. In the meantime, I have discovered the following behaviour on my car:
  1. The LKA settings do not appear when unlocking and getting into the car.
  2. The LKA settings appear, and default to 'enabled', when the car is placed in a ready state.
  3. If LKA is 'disabled' when the car is in a READY state, the setting will save for the rest of the journey.
  4. If the parking brake is applied the LKA will revert to 'enabled' when the car is placed in a READY state, as in steps 1 and 2.
Really, my main issue with this is the lack of transparency around the settings, and the inconsistent behaviour of the settings. The lack of saving is annoying too.
Thanks for that. I've noticed LKA intermittently re-enables but haven't pinned a cause on it yet. I'll check that out. Mine's about to go in for its 1st service, with LKA being top of my gripe list. It'll be interesting to see if the dealer has an upgrade to apply

It's been reported previously that some cars are prone to LKA turning back on if the screen is set to Auto theme - i.e. follows light/dark based on whether or not the headlights come on. When the theme changes LKA may turn back on. ?‍♂️

I'd argue that the behaviour you describe of the settings are the very definition of consistent ... every time the car is in a position where the driver may change then the settings revert to LKA default on.
Having a setting which is invisible until you set off isn't great, imo, but happy to disagree.

It would be like having a phone where you couldn't adjust the call volume until you received a call.

Yes. But there is a fix for it. There's a video on YT about it.
Every time I step out of the cat and close the door (not lock the door), and go back in it activates lane assist and choses the default mode. The car does not have to be turned off.

And there you have it - exactly what I described ... you've vacated the driver seat so the car can't assume that you will return to it rather than someone else. And that's what the regs say about LKA defaulting to On. :)

The car can't know, but it could ask - cue on startup I get a panel of 2+ icons, the first is "Guest" and the second is "Tom" and so on for each regular driver and when I press my name, all my preferred settings are magically applied.

Yes, it could. But that's not what the MG4 offers as yet so the car is operating as per specification. And you typically have to pay a lot more to get a car that does offer profiles. :)

Well then I am in the wrong business, as profiles are not hard to code, so I'd better crack on and build my own EV, which in a masterstroke of marketing I shall call the Boiled Potato Electrocutor Mk I.

More seriously I am getting extremely tempted to build an OBD2 hack that sets all my preferred settings at the touch of a button.

I have set my greeting text to remind me to switch off LKA each time, and as the infotainment system takes so long to boot up anyway, the few seconds to cancel LKA and switch Front Collision Detection to warn only is not really worth fretting about.
Anyway, isn't MG supposed to be contacting all owners soon regarding a new LKA tweak? I wonder what form that will take, and still conform with NCAP's ludicrous ruling

Yep.
So the nickname now is Cat... I kind of like that.

What side of the road do they drive on, in China?

FWIW, I have no issues with LKA, I have never switched it off, and get the occasional twitch from the wheel, but it's completely predictable.

WIsh people would stop calling it 'Kill' Assist...
Mine has most definitely tried to kill me with it's yanking
Lucky an update has calmed it down massively

I think even the greatest fans of the MG4 (Me Included) must agree that the MG4 implementation of the NCAP requirements for LKA is poor at best.
I'm sure we have all been caught out on occasions by the system, What Car defined it as dangerous and even MG state that there are occasions (i.e. poor road markings, narrow country roads, Road works with narrow lanes, etc.) when it should be disabled.
My gripe is that there is no safe method of disabling the system while driving, even the latest software (which I don't have) still requires at least a couple of stabs at the info screen.

And there are one click solutions in other MG EVs. The MG5 (wouldn't buy) I had a loan of while my MG4 was being serviced had a physical button.

Mg5 is an older car and did not have to comply with the current rules. However, in the regulation itself is stated that two action like push and hold of a button is sufficient. They could use one of the buttons on the steering wheel or even one of the button underneath the central display to achieve this.

MG could even code it to one of the star buttons, but you need to press it twice to turn LKA off. ?‍♂️

The physical force from LKA on the steering wheel is definitely getting worse for me. When I first had the car it was a light vibration, these days it's a hard tug that often causes the car to swerve slightly to the alarm of passengers. This suggests the software is either 'learning' or some file that should automatically delete itself/contents is not, this latter was apparently the problem with my air bag warnings so I wonder if other issues have a similar cause.
