MG4 SE 51 kWh real range

Hi guys, what would be the real range to expect from this car while driving in the city and outside the city at 70-80 kmh average speed.

On Monday I took a long drive through the mountains on Transfagarasan (google it-nicest road to be and drive in Eastern Europe). I had a drive of about 280 km back and forth and the ABR it should me on my way back that I could make it back home with 23%. On going down from the mountain lake I've regen 8%, from 45% to 53% and it should me a consumption of -18.5 kWh. My average speed was 70 km/h because there are lots of small villages to drive through.

Because it was my first long drive with the car, I've made a stop to charge for 10 minutes, more to test the car, and I've got in 12 minutes (because I couldn't figure out in time how to stop the station) from 45% to 76% and arrived home with 45% battery after 117 km drive. Pretty amazed, but it was a nice sunny day with temperatures between 20 to 22.5°C.

In the last days I drove mostly in the city, last night I've charged my car to 100% and it shows me a range of 392 km for driving in the city. Can be this reachable while driving through the city?


What should I expect during the winter at -5°C? Thanks!

Around 320 km. Less in cold weather.

It can be very variable depending on the ambient temperature and how you're driving. I've never got less than 130 miles going fast on the motorway in cold weather with the heating on, and arriving with maybe 25 miles in hand.*

In warm weather driving on slow roads I don't really know because the furthest I've actually wanted to go has been about 150 miles and the car has done that with plenty to spare. 170-180 miles is probably possible.

I think you get to know your car and your own driving habits and how temperature affects range (quite a lot) and learn to work with it.

* No, wait, I remember one day at Christmas last year when I stopped to charge after 95 miles, and only had 25 miles in hand when I stopped. I was driving pretty damn fast on the motorway with the heating on, in cold weather.

3mile/kwh in winter & 4mile/kwh in summer, just use your battery % as the miles left.

Normally I charge at home, and never even think about range because the car has enough for my daily needs. If I'm on a long trip then I have Android Auto (Google maps) on the infotainment screen, with my destination as my next charging stop. I watch the miles to the charging stop on the central screen and the miles of range left on the driver's screen, normally wanting to see a bit more in front of me than there is to the side. If it's looking tight I can slow down, but I've learned to factor in what I know about the terrain in front of me to finesse that.

If it goes completely pear-shaped, then I know where the charger before the one I'm headed for is, and simply tell Android Auto to go there instead. (This has only happened once, on a day in August when I expected to get my summer range but in fact cold temperatures, rain and a headwind meant that there was basically no chance I'd get that far.)

I'm perfectly prepared to believe that having a satnav that knows your state of charge and range and where the chargers are and can route you to the best one is better than this, but really, what I'm doing is entirely adequate. Doing it on multiple occasions has let me get familiar with the way the car consumes electricity so that my guesswork gets better and better.

Just did my 6 monthly or so full charge (6% to 100% and balance) last night. At 6% SoC the car showed 9 miles of range, which pretty much concurred with 3 point odd miles per kWh the GOM was showing since last charge/accumulated total. After the charge the app shows 176 miles for 100% (i.e. Normal mode no AC, or ECO mode with AC).

Thank you guys, I will learn more about its range in the coming months of winter and then add 20-30% to the actual winter range and that should be pretty accurate.

The range is just a guess the car makes based on recent performance.

I wouldn't worry - it doesn't really mean anything.

In the UK the MG car configurator gives pretty good estimates of range under different conditions and the EV database also provides very good statistics about range under different conditions: MG MG4 Electric 51 kWh

But as well as ambient temperature and road speed your own driving style will make a difference too.

There are a few things that affect the GOM, (guess O meter).

How you've been driving recently, is probably the biggest effect. Battery calibration and balance will also have an influence.
The 51 requires regular balance charging, up to 100% and left for several minutes. A bit less regularly, a calibration charge, from under 10% to 100% in one go. This lets the battery management system know how much energy is available.
If we've been driving around the suburb without A/C at 100% the GOM will show over 400km, but as soon as we get on the highway at 110km/hr that rapidly drops.
At the moment it's on 78% and showing 306km. Driving around the 70km/h suburb with A/C on. The wife drives with normal regen I drive with OPD on.
There's different ideas about the most efficient setting for regen, but I find there's not much difference. It's more down to how you drive at what speed.

Thanks for that. In Sydney's humidity we use the air all the time but we only do short trips, 3-10 kms, up and down hills.

yes we moved from 2.4mtrs above sea level (worried about getting feet wet) to 86mtrs above sea level (close to the flame zone). HaHa. We make 1kWh going down hill and lose 2kWh going up. Kind regards Graham.

Okay, so this is UK spec but the Real Range for the Standard Range listed here should be a good estimate: MG MG4 EV Standard Range

You can look at Highway/Cold temperature for worst case examples too.

I have a Long Range and found the data for that model to be very similar to my experience.

@Rolfe Your anecdotes closely align with the Real Range data included on the EV Database.

That was why I linked to the EU spec on that site above, because it will be expressed in km rather than miles.

...in comparison to an EV driver living on the flat plain, yes...

But of course, if you live in the hills then an EV makes even more extra sense than an ICE car for the savings on fuel and brakes. EVs for the win!
