MG4 Software Update Thread

Not everything you say annoys me but saying stuff that isn't true does.
Yes I have openly criticised customer service and some dealers, this is in response to really poor service they have provided members. , I have never singled out an individual,
Again as I have pointed out I have never used the word despised either, that is you that has used that word about me, nothing I have ever posted about poor service could be described as despising something or someone.

Perhaps I'll see a post of his on the forum some day.
Miles posts regularly on the forum and you were involved in a thread discussion with him the other day (X power waiting area) and even quoted one of his posts in your reply

I need to revisit that, I wasn't aware it was the same person. I'm sorry if my choice of words offended you, I had no such intention.

I don't like people saying things that aren't true either. If Miles didn't say that the external temperature display reports random numbers, it's a shame someone quoted him as saying that. To me that came over as "yet another MG dealer saying that an obvious fault is an intended characteristic of the car".

I'm sorry we seem to be at loggerheads, I'd really prefer not to be.

I am not offended I am a big boy and couldn't care less what people think, I am however more than capable of getting myself in trouble without anyone else's help

Sorry for the delay - here you go from the MG4 Owners UK group

Thanks. Let's assume he was mistaken, then. Was it said a long time ago?

I've actually put out a call on Twitter for an explanation of how complicated it is to equip a USB music playing device with the capability to handle a couple of layers of folders/directories. I may not get any sensible answer, of course. If it turns out that it's more code than a satnav and someone has to be paid big bucks for the royalties, that might explain it.

If MG really want to customise the models to that extent, maybe they should tell prospective buyers straight out, along with the news that they won't be getting heated seats and so on. They could, as someone hinted, charge us money to enable folders, or the external temperature display, or allow the radio to stay off, or to switch off the automatic door locking. Might be easy money. Maybe they could do the same if we wanted the time displayed...

Another general software (or possibly hardware) issue that annoys me is how laggy the touchscreen is, I know this has been raised previously but I'm just curious if others notice some specific details I have,
Selecting some icons/links/pages gets an immediate response, while others can take 2 or 3 presses to get a reaction,
Are others seeing similar issue?
My thoughts;
If was a hardware issue like slow CPU or not enough RAM memory in the consule I would expect All transitions to be slow
Even when it takes 2 or 3 presses I've noticed the icon does show blue outline on first push, so touchscreen has received input - just not reacting to it, suggesting the touchscreen(hardware) sensitivity is ok.
So I'm kinda surmising (possibly wrongly!) that the laggy screen is software not hardware, so (hopefully) may be fixed in a subsequent update....
Also if I'm sitting at home on my couch with a tablet that takes 3 taps for a response it's mildly annoying, but on a car touchscreen with small icons that means I divert my vision/attention away from the road 3 times instead of once - I think that borders on a safety issue IMHO
Would others agree? - or think I'm being over dramatic about this.

It's not something I've really noticed, though it may be that I don't have a comparison standard. I usually take a minute set everything up before I go, so an instant response isn't essential. If I do have to change something on the move I'm more inclined to attribute a problem to missing the right part of the screen than to the screen being laggy.

The other day I drove off from a motorway service station without remembering to kill LKA, and realised a few minutes later when it took exception to the line I was taking on a bend. I got it to go off quite quickly though. Two taps and we're gone, and press the physical button to get back to the home screen. I'd much rather have a physical button to do that, but I didn't think the screen was particularly laggy. Is that the kind of thing you mean? Which functions do you find particularly problematic?

Off top of my head I think the links on RHS when in home page and some links within pages are slow to react but can't remember precisely which ones, I'm currently away so won't be in the car until the end of week to check exactly.
Although thanks u have put idea in my head to monitor if the same links are slow every time or does it vary - this would narrow down if SW/HW
But Im mostly curious if others are witnessing same symptoms
I do confess I need to remind myself to prep settings before driving off - something I do not recall having to do in any ICE I previously had.

For an insight into dealer warranty experiences, I can recommend the current poll:

The MG4 has average efficiency, it is neither terrible nor great. There are far worse cars.

All EVs suffer reduced range as speed increases due to their greater efficiency being proportionally more affected by aerodynamic drag (than an equivalent ICE car, which is far less efficient to start with). You will see far better figures at 100km/h or 105km/h than 120km/h because of this effect.

This is not well advertised. Also, on the Trophy the rear wings negatively affect the aero, so we have extra drag the SE does not have.
Fair enough, I can't argue with that, and I do see a somewhat improved range since reducing m-way speed to 105kmh, (tho on busy days I feel I have to go somewhat quicker as I'm holding up traffic)
Question I have is what GOM range figure are others with Trophys seeing after charging to 100%, is it more or less than 400km (250m)?
,and yes I'm aware of the recommended 80% max charging of NCM batteries in normal use
I have been toying with 'Adaptive' regeneration, right now it appears to give a bit more range over the journeys I have taken but the regenerative braking is less apparent than on '3' so I suspect a bit more wear on brake pads. Another plus is it provides a smoother drive with better free wheeling.

I also suspect a warped rear under tray will only have an adverse effect on range as it may induce more downward force due to air flow, coupled with the Trophy rear spoiler, hence more drag. Once I have mine repaired it will be interesting to see what difference it makes
Very good, I might try some experimenting with Adaptive regen also.
If I get my new undertray before yours I'll update if range improves, otherwise would be interested to hear how you get on

I didn't have to do this in my previous ICE car either, but that was 14 years old. I had an ICE SUV as a courtesy car just before getting the MG4 and that was much more similar to the MG4 than to my old Golf. It even detuned the radio when I switched the car off, and I had to find the station every time from scratch before driving off. At least the MG4 doesn't try that one! I think quite a lot of this is "modern car technology" rather than being specific to EVs.

I suspect u may be right about 'modern car technology' tho it does make u think, they tell us technological advancements will make all our lives easier, but I can't help sometimes thinking the opposite, my last car was a 7 YO BMW420d that I didn't have any SW/setup issues with, tho admittedly more established tech, a much dearer car, and it didn't have half the bells and whistles the MG4 has, But I could just jump in and drive it!

Agree, technology is great if it works without a hiccup. However with the likes of Google & Amazon assistants, (smart home) smart light bulbs, high tech screen driven electric cars... you can end up with a full time IT Technician job in your own home !

EV ownership is great...until the mother-in-law gets one.... that's just happened to me and I am tech support ?

I was quite startled to discover that the MG4 didn't have a spare tyre, but was told "all EVs are like that." I thought it was something specifically to keep the weight down in the heavy EV cars. I was with a friend at the Ideal Homes Exhibition and we were looking at a Tesla, and she said "where's the spare wheel?" and I explained. She looked seriously unimpressed and I could see her beginning to reconsider her desire for an EV right there.

Then a few days later my flute-lesson partner came back into the teacher's house while I was still taking my leave, in distress. She had a puncture and a flat tyre. I said, what about your spare? She didn't have one. In an ICE car. Exactly the same issue as with the MG4 and the Tesla. She had the tyre sealant goop, but the defect in the tyre was too bad for that to work.

There followed an evening of driving around rescuing my friend, and a mutual friend she had been going to collect, and returning the first friend back to her car once the RAC finally turned up. The RAC guy did something different with goop and a temporary patch, and said he would follow her back to the garage in the village - about 14 miles. I followed too, and realised she was getting slower and slower as the RAC patch failed. She made it to the garage but the tyre looked really flat again by then.

Absolutely stupid carry-on when a spare wheel could have had it fixed in half an hour, even by a couple of ladies of a certain age working by brute force and ignorance. (Probably, and this is what always happened to me in the past, some knight in shining armour would materialise just as we were getting going, take over, and have the whole thing would be done in ten minutes.)

But it's not just EVs. This was an ICE car, and not a particularly new one at that - it has a CD player!

I don't see why not, but I've never in my life had to do it. It seems that the very sight of a woman starting to jack up her car brings out the Sir Galahad in any men within sight, and very shortly the job is taken out of my hands and efficiently dealt with.

I’m not offering to help a woman change her tyre anymore. I got the whole “just because I’m a woman do you think I am incapable” crap. Although, replying “yes” didn’t exactly help.

I would usually stop regardless if its a male or female. The jacks etc supplied with spare wheel kits are questionable on an EV with the extra weights and sometimes it would be better to call the AA. I have come accross very capable females (I work with many excellent female engineers) and not so capable males.

That's just rude. And doing no favours to other women who might welcome help.

I remember having a flat tyre in a torrential thunderstorm somewhere in France when my mother was in the car. I managed to get to an unmanned petrol station and under the canopy, and set to work, hoping to impress my mother with my expertise. Five minutes later an English driver pitched up looking for petrol, took the whole thing out of my hands, and just did it.

I was slightly put out that I hadn't been able to show off to my mum, but honestly, I'm not going to turn down gallantry like that. And he was quicker and better at it than I would have been.
