Actually, they call the code and data stored in flash memory directly on the ECU's processor chip (i.e. in the modules) "firmware", and infotainment and/or maps is typically called "software". I think it's because infotainment software is so big and needs an operating system, making it even bigger, that it's typically stored on a disk drive. These days, especially in a vehicle, that disk is typically solid state, and often made of much the same electronic building blocks as the flash memory in an ECU's processor. However it's typically split into named files, just like the software on your PC, laptop, or phone.They have updated your modules but not firmware.
