MG4 Software Update Thread

Had my annual service in July on my 22 number plates Trophy. It says 1300R33 software which was last detected on 23.01.2023. As of yesterday the car decided to throw me a bunch of messages on the dash board: forward collission system unavailable, auto emergency breaking unavailable, rear drive assist unavailable, EPS performance reduced, stability control fault, traction control fault, autohold fault, hill hold unavailable. Looks like the software needs to be updated?

Mine does that sometimes,think it's when the car is too slow to wake up,can still drive then a few minutes later she's wide awake ..

Software: is for a diagnostic interface to connect the car to a pc but you need a RMI account to access
RMI MG4: are the documents for maintenance & repair
RMI ZS: same but for the ZS
R46: one is a link to the original files (core86 folder) the other is a local copy, it's the R46 application software and 68.4.3.0 ICM ECU

I might give this a go. Roughly how long did it take?

Trophy only afaik, I don't think there are SE files in there as well.

Unfortunately only the trophy, we need to find a nice MG tech that can borrow the update USB sticks for a weekend ?

They should 'accidently' leak all the updates online. It will only benefit MG as those who brick their cars will lose their warranty, and those who are successfull will stop pestering MG about the lack of software updates.

No joy here. I downloaded the maps update exactly as stated. The car picks up the usb stick, but only the top option lights up. I clicked ok and it say there no VN in the maps file. There is a VN and it says “ Pass”. I am running R40, so may be previous comments saying it won’t work with R40 and above is right. What a load of disappointing rubbish. I shall email MG??

For the maps the USB should just have the /maps folder in the root and nothing else, VN and the rest of the files are inside that folder. FAT32/NTFS should work fine. It may not work if the USB stick is > 32GB. I had a 128GB drive but I just resized the partition to be < 32GB to be sure.
Don't unplug the USB once you've plugged it in to the car though or it will likely become corrupt. Also eject it from the PC safely using the taskbar icon just to be sure.
Plug the USB in and go to the update maps in system and then wait for a few minutes. Eventually it should find the drive and start to parse the data.
I just updated maps from 2022Q1 to 2023Q4 on 1300R46

I used a 128 GB SSD and it worked fine - and much much faster than a USB drive.

SUCCESS???… at last.

As mentioned previously, I downloaded the update file from MG EU. No need to put VIN in. I am running R40 (hoping to get a successful upgrade to R59 in a few weeks, dealers last attempt failed).

Everything was unzipped to the USB stick. First couple of attempts failed as it said no VN in maps folder.

It then occurred to me to recheck the folder structure on the USB. Lo and behold there was a Maps Folder …… but within this was another folder called Maps and within that Folder were all the files. So I re unzipped it making sure there was only one Maps Folder on the Root. Hope this may help others, although I may be the only one who had a folder within a folder.

Bingo! Now running 2023 Q4 (I was 2022 Q3). Having said that I can’t see major differences on the map locally ie there still a road which has been there for over two years, still not shown.

@haloweenhamster thanks for the detailed post, I've been sitting on those files forever and never have got around to trying them. Dealers always give a story about it costing x an hour and will probably not be covered under warranty etc... I figured by now if anyone had had any bad experience with them then we would have found out

I think I will try them out today. I am on:

Entertainment System version
SWI68-29958-1300R30

Telecommunication version
SNAKP18E32

So hopefully it works for me too.


EDIT: Yep, took a whole ten minutes of my time! Easy upgrade. No idea why I didn't do it months ago. I can immediately see that I have the left star bug but I can live with that. Screen is noticeably more responsive and I have the new AC controls.

I re-read the instructions and actually upgraded the Infotainment ECU as well this time, and now the left star button works just fine. I wonder if for all those with this fault it was simply user error and the Infotainment ECU was not updated, just the AVN MPU.

Time to do the 2023Q4 maps upgrade now...

Yep, mine was MY22 R30 before upgrade. Goes faster than the MY23 cars because it's not being weighed down by that rear wiper and headrest
Only improvements noted so far, I haven't noticed any new issues. Having the top nav menu appear over Android Auto is great.

R46 where have you been all my life?!
Fixed my bugged left steering wheel button (whatever you set for left shortcut it also triggered the right option too - e.g. could change drive mode or regen, yet would also trigger right side AC or source simultaneously).

Apple CarPlay control menu is now on the RHD side.
Top menu bar staying visible during CarPlay/Android Auto so much more useful.
Nice addition to choose if AC shortcut is on left or right wheel shortcut.
Large button controls for HVAC so much safer for use when driving.

I did request them to update entertainment and Telecommunications software updates too but not sure if they did. Can you tell me if these are the latest versions? Sorry I couldn't see forum properly if this has been addressed already but due to issues on replies not visible I thought to post.

Shall I bug them to upgrade if the below is not the latest?

Or shall I give like some of you doing DIY updates?

Booking my car in for R33 tomorrow (at last!) and the receptionist girl said there was another new version available, she thought R50. I queried this, was she talking about the Trophy? But she didn't seem sure. Frankly I don't believe it.

Crikey, no. The latest is R59 for the Trophy. You're missing at least two in the middle there.

We have an MG4 Trophy LR. It’s 12 months old at the end of the month. Ours came with R40. They were supposed to have upgraded to R59 at our Service last week, but it didn’t happen. Hopeless! They are going to have another go in a few weeks time. I’ve updated the Sat Nav, as Dealers don’t do this apparently. I’m loathe to try a system update, in case it fouls up the warranty.
