MG4 Software Update Thread

I reverted to R33 because Wifey’s taking the car in for servicing tomorrow.

She’s going to complain about the heater being 2°C off and will ask if updating to R38 or upgrading the HVAC ECU might fix the issue. She also has several photos of the car running R59 in her phone and will take along a USB drive with archives of both R38 and R59, just in case. (If the dealer is interested)

The idea behind is to see if it’s possible to get R63 straight from the dealer. I’m not sure if she’ll succeed , but she insisted that “Dutch chicks always get what they want.” Let’s see if it proves her right!

I’m a bit skeptical but who knows…
Don’t show the dealer r59 on the car. They may inform mg and void your warranty. Plus possible copyright infringements etc!

As I mentioned, the car has been reverted to the original R33.

The car is under warranty unless it can be proven that I’ve tinkered with something AND that this tinkering caused a failure.

The dealer cannot void the warranty simply because he’s been told that unsupported software was installed and then removed.
At his own level, without any proof, I don’t think he can do anything else. Why would he, by the way?

That said, upgrades and downgrades may be logged somewhere. So, after telling the dealer that I’ve installed Trophy software, in the unlikely event of an AVN-related issue, it would be wise to go elsewhere to have the warranty applied.

Biggest question that could be asked is where are you getting the copyrighted files!!

That you reply with MG 😂 as all files have come from them
R46, R59 & R33 came from MG technicians
The rest indirectly from a subscription you can buy from MG

One thing I'd be interested in knowing is whether it retains the maps if you go from R59 to R38 and back again?

I’m not sure if the map partition gets formatted when switching between SE and Trophy releases. I’ll let you know when I revert to R59 (or, hopefully, R63)

My initial guess is that it remains unaffected: when I upgraded from R46 to R59, the maps weren’t erased.

As I suspected, my wife was unable to obtain a copy of the legendary R63 archive… but at least she gave it a try.

I think there’s something fundamentally wrong in the way updates are handled at MG dealerships.

The car arrived with 1100R33 and 69.3.8.0 MCU.

They upgraded the MPU to R38 but failed to carry out the MCU upgrade (the version paired with R38 is 69.4.4.0).

When she collected the vehicle, she candidly mentioned the MCU to them, but their response was, "There's no need to upgrade."

She then asked if there were specific guidelines or a reason not to perform the update. Their explanation was that if something is functioning well, it shouldn’t be updated, as doing so might introduce bugs.

I am inclined to think they lack a deep understanding of the technology and have little grasp of how integrated systems function. On a broader scale, MG updates seem to be carried out in a chaotic manner. I’m not just talking about FICM updates but about all modules and ECUs across the car (BMS, HVAC...)

This is quite alarming, as it means every car ends up with a unique configuration. Such a broad range of versions can easily lead to unexpected bugs and likely explains why we all experience different behaviours in our vehicles, even with the same MPU release.

My dealer said they did not update all because hardware versions aren't stable. No need to update in terms of complaints (formal way to point the finger at MG if it does not work)? Do not touch it.
So it is also a lack of trust of the dealership in the MG products.

yes, that's rather disturbing...
I'll probably switch back to R59 soon anyhow!

Goodness me. I am feeling left out. My SE will be 2 years old end January and obviously it will need to be serviced.
But currently, it is still at the R13 infotainment standard.

I intend to complain about the terrible LKA function as well as ACC which has become quite jumpy in terms of speed.
Bluetooth keeps forgetting my phone.
AA no longer works with my phone. And with my wife phone, there is no sound when using Maps even though it is in muted.

So I will be asking for the software to be updated.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, in your case, your current release is quite outdated, as are probably the other modules. Make sure they carry out a thorough check and update everything…

The thing is ... software updates are a check item on the service checklist, so I've no idea why a service dealer would refuse to do them. 🤦‍♂️
