MG4 Software Update Thread

I suspect the real reasons dealers have problems are:

1) 12V battery maintaining to avoid the car trying to turn off
2) Solid Internet connection for the laptop (which I've read here previously may be the primary cause of connection issues)
3) The "technicians" aren't comfortable with the process - i.e. they're not really "techie" enough

Number 3 is probably the main issue. :)

The dealer needs to connect the car to SIPS and update all. Thats all.
That's not part of the revised maintenace check sheet anymore. Any service will strictly follow that.

That's definitely an issue MG is aware of, latest SIPS release can cache large files offline prior to connecting to a car for that exact reason.

But if you come with complaints not covered by list... Then what?

Mine is going in for regular maintenance shortly before Christmass. So we will see. I have quite list.
However, last Friday my lawyer did tell me they were booking the car in to solve the complaints I had (of which I already know they cannot if I play hard ball). That fix is including software updates.
This certainly does not fit in the two hour slot they originally planned for regular maintenance...

Just connect up a 12V battery booster, or a mains-fed 12V battery trickle charger. That's all it means - the 12V battery might try to discharge whilst doing the updates (as the car isn't in the READY state so the car isn't trying to charge the 12V battery) and so cause the 12V electrics to shut down due to low voltage level.

That's what I understand by it anyway.

Yep I've had that, temporarily bricked a module, 12V battery dropped a bit too low, I now do most updates with a battery charger on now
The longest update by far for me was FVCM

Well, if the car is still under warranty (remember, infotainment and driving assists are only covered for 3 years out of the 7)
  • You first reproduce the issue and take video or photo evidence of it (MG will require it later)
  • You follow the estabilished diagnostic procedure (there are 3 "books" about it)
  • Then open a ticket on service now
  • Wait for MG to approve or deny the warranty action and claim

It's not that complicated really, if they deny a warranty claim let them put that in writing with the service now ticket number they've opened so you can take further actions

So I leave the battery plugged in and I also put the terminals on top of a battery charger...? So I was starting with pliers except that I put in a car charger?

THANKS

Yes, I believe what is being said is:
  • Leave your 12V battery connected.
  • Connect a battery charger across the 12V terminals.
  • Make sure this is switched on while doing updates.

Diagnostic procedures? Three books?

I have three pdf's in I-Smart. What else are you referring to?
