MG4 Standard tyres are seriously dangerous!

I’m not finding this at all @bowfer - car feels planted stable for me on long journeys or short. I did change the tyres due to vibration but that was solely due to vibration at higher speeds, not because of what you mention. Have they got you a replacement car yet?

I can only agree to this. The MG4 feels absolutely well-set and steady for a car of its size. The only complaint I have is a rather strong susceptibility to crosswinds. That said my car has been on Michelin Cross Climates from day one, because summer tyres wouldn't work here in the winter.

If you want to feel “twitchy” try a BMW i3 in windy conditions (otherwise excellent car) - that’ll keep your mind focused on the road ahead ?

Yes it does catch the wind for some reason, at 1.5m its a good 100mm taller than my last daily driver, a seat leon est which was a car that tracked straight and true in comparison.
Good to know your car isn't too twitchy, will live with it and hope better rubber solves the issue.

Yep, I'll second that! It took me a while to adjust to the steering on our old i3. Loved the car, mind you. After that, I find the MG4 really well planted and relaxing to drive - not at all tiring on long journeys.

An i3 was my MG4's predecessor.

(Still have it though, couldn't be arsed to sell it. It costs virtually nothing and it's great as a backup car.)

Similar miles, but not a lot of wear, which i beleive is part of the problem - the compound may be a little too hard - i put on michelin crossclimates on my previous car (VW 2008 Tiguan - current a spare! - as just couldn't sell it), great in the winter, but the cross climates wore down twice as fast as "european" continentals & and they were a little stetchy in heavy rain due to aquaplaning - they key thing with the MG4 is that in winter / wet (todate), just be a little careful in accelerating out of bends - i.e only hit the accelerator on straight roads!

The supplied tyres are a hard compound to decrease the rolling resistance and with the higher tyre pressures than that of an ICE car help with the efficiency and range. Unfortunately this combination has a negative impact on the amount of grip.
Changing the tyres for a softer compound will increase the amount of grip especially in wet conditions but also increase the rate of wear and possibly decrease the range.

I've seen recommendations on forums to run higher than manufacturer recommended tyre pressures to increase range, but this comes at the expense of grip, comfort and possibly tyre noise also.

For anyone suffering with low grip issues, I'd check the tyre pressures first before even thinking about replacing the tyres.

I’m running at 2.7bar all round and haven’t had any grip issues on the standard tyres (except when forcing it to step out on roundabouts and sweeping bends). I’ve recently been doing a regular 105 mile round trip on some fun A roads, A272, A34, A30, and some narrow B roads, early morning with frost and ice and the return wet and patchy. No problem with quick overtakes and throttle control through quick turns and sweeping corners, even when testing the grip levels to lose grip on purpose it’s felt stable and controlled. Straight line stability under hard acceleration and at speed it also very good, very similar feedback and ride as the BMW i4 I had for a 4 day test drive. You can improve on the standard fit tyres on most cars but they are definitely not dangerous. Oh and my wipers are good too, work how they should even in the nasty winter weather.

I am sure they are fine and I am also sure that replacing them gives a big improvement.

Part of the cost cutting on the MG4 is the choice of tyres.

Because it is cheaper than alternatives, I have the option to change the tyres if I want to and I am still ahead on the deal compared to competitors.

And I can change the wiper blades, get some aftermarket mats, upgrade the interior lighting and still be ahead.

The key thing is that it will be my choice, all of the costs are not already in the car and if it is good enough as is, I won't spend on them.

I like this aspect of the MG4, I know some will think the cost cutting goes too far but that's what the more expensive competitors are for.

Hm, not sure that's true here in France. Our MG4 came fitted with Continental tyres, which certainly aren't downmarket and currently work very well (albeit on a brand-new car – I'll have to report back after a few 1000 kms of driving!).
