Noob charging question...

..Hmm, mebbe I should see if I can step up to the "long-range" one as a replacement, depending on the price difference?

Arf
Good thought, Arf. They may give you a significant discount on the newer model price for the goodwill. Sorry you've had this problem - just bad luck, I think.

Yeah, my feeling exactly, and I bear MG no ill-will. SAIC manufactured 320,000 EVs last year, apparently, so even if their quality hit-rate is 99.99%, that means, randomly, 32 are potentially duffers that slip through the net; that's still impressive - but unfortunate if you get one of them....

Update 4:

I guess threats of rejection put the breeze up the mothership, as I got a call this morning to say it's fixed. Huzzah! Apparently it was a combination of faults: A cable (A-hem ..), a relay (more believable) and (I think they said) summat to do with the BMS? Anywho, I will post the report for the interest (?) of all when I collect it tomorrow...

Happy to be able to really begin my MG journey, altho' a little peeved the "long-range" one appeared three weeks after purchase. Had I known, I would have waited, but thems the breaks....

...Fixed, and great to have it back. I presume "BCM" is an alternative term for the BMS? "Battery Control Module"? Anywho, I'll find out for def in a day or two, when I try charging "Sparky Norman" again...

BCM refers to the “Battery Control Module”.
BMS is the “Battery Management System”.
It sounds very much like the charging port relay to me !.
They would have done the software updates first, they always do any software update before firing the parts canon at the car.
It is the most sensible and more cost effective option.
Charge port relay fault I am thinking !.
That’s why the car would not charge.
All fixed now Arf.
Get driving and charging !.
Good luck ?.

Yeah, they did mention a relay replacement over the 'phone, altho' it's not specifically mentioned on the ticket.
I did say to the sales guy "you buggers could have mentioned the long-range version coming out.." to which he replied "..Really? I haven't heard about that, and the MG guy from head office was here the other day.. And he didn't mention it..." So I explained the additional features it has .. S'treuth!....

Just check the job ticket again Arf.
Under the heading.
“Update ticket”.
And he / she writes :-
“Replace locking relay as per MG and tested OK”.
You notice the inclusion of the words :-
“As per MG”.
This to ensure that they do not accused of installing replacement parts, then have the warranty claim rejected by MG.
I think they call it - “covering your arse” by the dealer ?.
I does not really surprised me that they don’t know anything about the release of the “Longer Range” version of the MG5.
It was no different when MG first released the ZS EV.
The normal answer from the majority of sales people where :-
“You probably know more about the car than we do”.
That was not difficult to be honest.
Truth is, they are not interested in selling / repairing EV’s really !.
They would prefer to carry on selling / servicing / fixing the problems on ICE models for the next 10 years if they had there way.
This is fairly common across all manufactures, with the exception of Tesla of course ?.
Many viewed EV’s as a passing trend that would soon fade away, a few years ago.
Well THAT is changing and changing fast.
Get with the program, or get left behind I say.
