@ Paulie 68 and all MG Folk,
Thanks for the corrections, opinions and comments and memories of The 75.
I accept and agreed that I may be wrong regarding MG but remain confident that my perception is right and shared by several auto-industry analyst.
But that is all. It is my personal perception. I am in no way an expert on MG and may be completely wrong.
As for Chinese made "white household goods", in the 80s I lived for sometime and travelled alot in Eastern Europe and there were many made in China products which were as good as the Bosch, Hover and other market leaders of those days.
Of course most in the west did not realize how good the Chinese were in manufacturing till later when suddenly from mobile phones to TVs, computers and the lot seemed all to be assembled or manufactured in China.
My issue with MG / SAIC is not that the company is not good at car production.
Not at all. My issue is that they are very good but MG/SAIC would rather supply high tech components for other manufacturers to make more profit while not putting same quality tech in their own cars.
In fact given the tech advances that this company is said to have on the shelf, and their battery production know-how MG/SAIC should be producing cars that are far better than ZS EV no matter the price bracket.
Let's go back to battery packs.
3 companies own the 5 main Mega Battery factories in the world. Tesla @ 1, LG Chem @2, no.3,4,5 all belong to MG/SAIC. It is believed that MG/SAIC know-how in battery associated tech is next to none.
Well do we see any of this high tech in the ZS EV? well just a bit ?water cooling .... otherwise they even did not bother to give it delayed charging.
We can also look at SUV engines. Few years back MG / SAIC and General Motors USA collaborated on engine production. The American's went back to the US and added all the improvements gained in prototype testing to their new SUV series. It is said that MG could not be bothered and just banged the base prototype in the second series of MG ZS ICE. Sad the prototype improvements were not passed on to the consumer. I don't know for sure that this is true but I have come across this information and other similar reports in regards to MG.
MG/SAIC it seems just looks at profit and are least bothered about putting latest tech advances into their own brand cars because they deem this as not profitable.
It is interesting that one thing we all agree on is the Rover 75 being the best MG regular ICE product despite it's problems and the fact that it is over 20 years old.
I doubt that there is a car company out there other than MG that will have a 20 year old product as it's best.
Let's also look at the info/entertainment. System in the ZS EV.
I believe several people have had a look at it in terms of performance and tech and the general user friendliness. If you exclude apple play, android auto and the Sat Nav which are add on from other companies, the rest of the system is said to be very basic, of mediocre quality similar to a second generation Microsoft based internet capable mobile phone in performance ie a mobile phone from 20 years ago.
Would it have cost much more for MG to give us something better? No I do not think so. So why haven't they??
Well time will tell but all I want to put across is that we should know how MG goes about it business so we as customers know what to expect,
So please
- do not keep your hopes up that MG will provide purpose made batteries for range extension,
- do not over anticipate what any software update will be capable of doing. In fact unlike a Tesla some believe the electro-tech hardware that would have allowed extensive updates to introduce new features and functions is absent in the ZS EV so any updates will have very limited effect.
