In previous gasoline/fuel/petrol cars I would stay in the car for a while with the engine on, for various reasons (e.g., air conditioning or charging my phone) when waiting for someone.

In the hybrid car, however, when I do that - it seems that things run only on battery power, and after short time I get a warning to shutdown things.

Is there a way to force the fuel-driven engine to kick in and enable me to wait longer in an air-conditioned car for someone?

Unfortunately there's no way to run the petrol engine on demand @Emili, the message advising you to shutdown can be a bit annoying if you need to sit waiting in the car. :(

You shouldn't get the shutdown warning if the car is in ready mode, i have never had any warnings for shutdown appear and regualrly sit for long periods in the MG3 hybrid in ready mode, the engine just kicks in for short periods of time,

The shutdown warnings come on if the car has the ignition on but not in ready mode, as the 12v battery is being drained

Hi same as MGdriver as long as car is in ready mode engine will come in when required. Realised this when I forgot to switch off when I drew up in EV mode. Jumped out didn't lock doors, later neighbour chapped door and asked if I realised my car was constantly starting and stopping.

You can put heater on full temp that usually starts the engine again...

You should see the warning you mention only if you have pressed the stop button. If you have simply put the car in P (park) it will stay on (Ready mode), with the petrol engine stopping and starting as it needs to for charging the battery.
