unreliability survey

I've had the undertray fix and R33 applied under warranty, and am due to have the charging port lights replaced under warranty in a few weeks.
To be fair through your own admission you haven't been impressed with the service from your current dealer

My own patience is wearing thin. 1st gen SE. So far I’ve had - swimming pool in the boot since November it is on its 4th visit to 2 dealers on Saturday (I fear I’m getting a bit ratty now as it keeps happening and smells when it dries), knocking track rod after 7k which was replaced and having to moan at them about updating the head unit as I had no temp gauge. On a car with 11k

I have been absolutely unimpressed to the point of incandescent rage with my current dealer. Nevertheless they have actually done the necessary under warranty. Eventually. After much furious complaining.

Little point having a 7 year warranty if you, more often than not, fail to honour it and charge for the repair.
Genuinely shocked with the results and I must say, I think I swerved the right way when I cancelled my order. GL to all those souls still trying to get work done under "warranty".
It is only 7 years for certain things - there's a long list of exclusions ranging from 6 months, through 12, 18, 24 and 36 months across various items - eg interior is mostly 12 months.

Anything not explicitly excluded is covered for 84 months (7 years).

It pays to read the small print and I didn't know about all of these when I bought my car.

And this is the biggest problem of MG ownership. The car is great but the ownership experience is absolutely terrible. I'm more inclined to blame MG-UK rather than the dealers although clearly it's an element of both. MG seem dis-interested in fixing any issues (will we ever get a fix for LKA? , despite Which? being involved and promises nothing has been delivered by MG on this front) .

I bought the car thinking with a 7 year warranty and over the air updates I would keep it for a long time however I am very tempted to trade it in. It's depreciation has been massive but then that is no different to any other EV's. I'm thinking take advantage of that depreciation and get something not MG at a big discount used...

Got to agree, crap dealers will always be crap no matter the brand they are selling, too many just interested in shifting cars out the door.

Good dealers, and there are some out there, seem unnecessarily hamstring by MG UK and need everything signed off by them despite them probably being more than happy to be proactive and crack on with repairs.

Add in a very patchy spares supply chain and it can make for a very frustrating after sales experience

Thank god I leased it.

I've had some problems with traction under certain configurations of settings (high pedal, OPD) which cause the car to go way off balance during low speed braking and accelerating.

Also, it has decided to charge only at 3 kW since last month. No solution found to that.

Looking forward to a Renault 5 or a Model 3 in two years time. The MG just has too many little annoying things that take away from the experience. And the company obviously doesn't care to fix them.

I've just picked up the car from a bodyshop.

They got spare parts for the bumper area no problem. I know there were issues for some components earlier on, but I can attest no problem for rear bumpers + bracket.

And yet people are still complaining it is shit experience. Statistics don't lie (honest! :) )

Still pretty much a quarter not happy for one reason or another. It's only10ercent or so better than the What Car result.

When you completed the survey @fshuk1 did you report any faults with your car at all? Very fortunate if that is the case.

Sadly you can’t update the result of that survey otherwise I think a lot of us would revise and mark it down.

I had a launch SE and whilst it was a great driving car it had tons of issues -

Gearbox oil leak
Bubbling dashboard
Seat fabric poorly installed
Cracks on tail lights
Warped undertray
Noisy air con pump
Software issues - lane kill assist, inc auto lights too sensitve, heater calibration wildly inaccurate, random yellow brake warning triangle if you dare lock the car and want to use it shortly afterwards (like nipping in a corner shop).

I got rid after a year and good riddance, what a half baked unfinished car with shitty aftersales, I was quite open minded to Chinese cars before this, but I wouldn’t touch any with a barge pole now.

I picked up a used E-Golf and it has none of the above issues plus its software is rock solid like you expect from a car.

I have a phase 2 (2023 build) Excite 51 (I'm in Australia) and I'm one of the perhaps many people who lurk the forums without posting much because I don't have any issues to report. I'm just here to see what's happening in the world of software updates and for Rolfe's road trips.

I've had mine for about a year now, and really have nothing to report. I get in the car and drive it. Then don't think about it too much in between times. That's what you're supposed to do with a car right?

I've never had a warranty issue, only been to the dealer once for the complementary 1,000km check up. No issues with lane keep assist or AEB, I don't preflight the car I just hop in and drive and for the most part the car has melded into my life like any other appliance. In fact if I didn't hang out on these forums I'd probably assume everyone's experience was like mine.

My previous car was a Toyota Corolla and they have a reputation for reliability, so I was a little nervous changing particularly as I have a young family and the thought of being stranded out somewhere with the kids doesn't appeal, but I've really had no issues.

These sorts of forums will self select for people who have issues, because who's going to bother joining a forum and posting about a car that just gets them from A to B as they go about their lives? So you need to be mindful of the lens through which you view the MG4 world when reading the threads in here. Maybe also the phase 2 cars were more reliable than the original phase 1s (which we didn't get in Australia).

Overall I'm very happy, it's the best driving car I've ever owned, and I've had fun cars in the past, Toyota MR2, VTEC Honda CRX and a Toyota Corolla(ok maybe not that last one)

Good post. You are right though most folk, join car forums to chirp (moan) about their car. Is there a perfect car, doubt it. Don't get me wrong forums are bloody great, if you do have a problem. And forums have saved me a lot of money. Love the banter too. Plus I like tinkering (modding) my motors always have, and love seeing what others have done to theirs. ??

I believe any new model will have issues, from all manufacturers. Interesting that the MG5 complaints are not as numerous as the MG5 on the forum.
Just my observation.
Totally agree, I regularly go on "speak EV" forum as I am sure some other members of this forum do ( maybe under different names) it is probably the biggest forum in terms of covering all brands. As you said no car is without faults, niggles or complaints. The big thing for me is that you can see patterns of cars coming to market, issues being discovered and then after a few months cars becoming pretty rock solid with most issues sorted ( apart from some random car here and there)
MG don't seem as on it as other brands, for whatever reason, faults seem to drag on and take a lot longer to fix.

Oil leak took ages
Under tray still not rolled out fully
AC charging/ CCU replacement dragged on for several months in most cases
Software only just getting stable and useable for the most part
LKA took over a year to get to a safer level for the majority.
X power vibe now over a year and now looking like a group legal case.

The 4 is two years on now and when it came to market it didn't have a competitor in terms of value for money, the SE SR probably still really doesn't and is the version that gets most plaudits.

It just seems like a massive missed opportunity by MG to not cement that position but they have definitely slipped up and there are better quality put together cars out there now at far more competitive deals than 2 years ago (especially lease deals)

Reading though the reviews, a lot are down to owners not knowing how two operate their car. E.g. not being able to get out of the passenger door, open the charging port. "The part was an Osram D3S bulb. The price for the bulb was £296 including VAT". Bulb is £49.65 from Halford.

Are we dealing with facts here?
