VIBRATION ISSUE - hot off the press!

Pumping up the tyres helps transfer the vibration to the road, imagine a steel wheel on a pure flat surface and an unbalanced brake rotor, vs a soft tyre. Rather than vibes going up, tis vibes going down. I'm keen to take a rotor off and have it balance checked. Mainly due to the tyre pressure finding. Indicates its very close to the tyre vs drive shafts. But there's still something that puzzles me, eco mode is easily 80% less vibration. But this could simply be disengaging the motor, and being decoupled from the vibration source, as the vibration is still there in eco, unless mg speed matches the front motor ? Maybe its nothing more than power cut in diff modes and motor is still spinning.

I think he's on something rather than onto something :)
The caliper covers weigh nothing when compared to all the other mass in the suspension, driveshafts, motors etc.

As mentioned above, whipping them off is a simple test.

First, a little recap.

I got my Xpower in October 2023. Reported the vibration immediately. My dealership agreed there was a problem and put in a technical report to MG.

Subsequently have trialled a steering wheel damper (failed).
Wheels realigned and rebalanced (failed).
Wheels COMPLETELY REPLACED with non-vibrating wheels from a Trophy (failed).

News just in from the dealership.

MG have responded to say:

  • THEY KNOW THERE IS AN ISSUE!
  • THEY KNOW WHAT THE ISSUE IS.
  • But THEY WON'T SAY WHAT THE ISSUE IS.
  • However THEY ARE WORKING ON A FIX.
I had the vibration issue at 70mph yesterday for the first time. I've had the car 6months. I changed the KERS to adaptive and found that it cut it instantly.

Ive been running on Auto regen for the past few weeks, it has been smoother but I attributed that to higher tyre pressure. I have found Auto regen definitely is more efficient, for start/stop plus highway driving. Not sure why it isn't set as default.

I will give this a try, not used adaptive regen before.
However when choosing one pedal mode, I do get a vibration through the car even at a standstill. I don't know if this because it could be bringing the front motor into play for this function. Does anyone else get this when choosing one pedal mode?

So a bit of an update. With my rejection request being binned, I ask for a full run down on what had been tried on our car, before I collect it this Thursday. They have done the following (all in writing via e-mai):-

1. Swapped wheels and tyres from another X-Power - no improvement

2. Fitted 4 new tyres to our original wheels - no improvement but 'softer' ride (no info on if same make & spec tyres were fitted but I'm guessing so)

3. Case raised with MG Technical, requesting steering damper mod - request refused on the basis that that it doesn't work (at least MG are admitting this now)

4. Confirmation that MG China have some 'modified suspension components' to address this issue that are currently about to be released to the UK for testing but the dealer has no further info but has confirmed they will source these parts and fit to my car as soon as they can order them.

I am heading out for a test drive with the master tech on Thursday with the car (doing a back-to-back test with their demo car) so I'll try and get more info on the modified suspension then and report back but it does seem on the face of it, MG might actually be working on sorting this.

Isn't the anology interesting with the Trophy ER...
What if the Xpower and ER share the hardware causing the issue?

Yes, I get a vibration as soon as I turn it it on and then it seems to disappear into the background once driving.

Yet another variant of the vibration issue. Engine, suspension, steering system.. what's next?
Wing mirrors?
I reckon it's air vortexes caused by bad aerodynamic design. The same reason that most Airbuses have small winglets on the end of each wing to prevent vibration of the wingtips.

UPDATE:

Just had a call from the dealer (Luscombes of Leeds). My car is booked in tomorrow afternoon for the NEW Steering Damper to be fitted (which takes around 30 minutes to fit). Apparently this is a DIFFERENT damper to the one they fitted to the car previously - which didn't work.

They tell me they fitted one to an XPower last week and it was a huge improvement. There was still a slight buffering noise at around 63mph+, but it was much better. The idea is that they fit it tomorrow, and then I see how I feel about driving the car over the weekend.

Reminder: This dealer has been very supportive of my complaint and submitted a Technical Report to MG back in October 2023 when we collected the car, having observed the vibration for themselves. They have also previously tried a Steering Damper, replacing the tyres AND replacing the wheels themselves. They're fully onboard with trying to work with me and MG UK to resolve this issue.

Thanks for the update.

Let's see how you get on over the weekend.

Sadly though I feel that a damper is just hiding an inherent problem.

Awaiting your next update. ?

Good news, hope it fixes your vibration and you are happy, let us know?

To me, MG know what the issue is as new models have been updated at build.

This is just a sticking plaster to save cost, whatever is vibrating will still be vibrating but you won't feel it so much, it's still bound to put wear on components and with the friction, I feel it must be lowering the mi/kWh.

Looks like the damper is what they install in NZ, but I believe the issue is supposed to be much larger - something to do with the alignment of the powertrain.
