VIBRATION ISSUE - hot off the press!

This is what they installed on 30 January 2024 WHICH DIDN'T HELP. Will be interesting to see what the "new version" looks like in comparison.

If you go back a bit you will see that has already been put up, but thanks anyway.

No use to me though, not on it.
Don't worry Bricktop, I'll keep you updated?

One of the guys has now had their dealership agree that he has a vibration/hum and steering intervention and they have reported to MG.I don't know if you remember but I said that I have to keep straightening the wheel as I drive.

This was after his dealership:

Said they couldn't replicate the issue(fob off)
Said it was a characteristic(fob off).
Told him to go away(fob off)

This move forward was only after he threatened court action

So just been contacted by our dealer to say the 'revised' steering damper is now available to order and they are hoping to fit it to our car next Friday.

I spoke to the master tech and he confirmed that new damper is a different part number to the previous damper (which we all know did nothing), although as he hasn't seen one in the flesh yet, he was unable to talk about any differences.

As discussed previously, the best this will do is slightly mask the problem, rather than address the root cause but I'll report back after it's been fitted with my findings anyway.

Well, it's very slightly different (edit: but I think that's just the other side from the photo above?), but it works primarily by adding to the moment of inertia, together with the compliance of the rubber bushes. The weight will not have changed much, so the only other aspect I can see that would make much difference is the compliance of the rubber bushes altering the frequency range over which it has an effect.

But even if it is more effective, as said above it's a mask for the problem not a solution.

New item certainly looks a fair bit different, having what looks like a cast aluminium centre tray and larger bushes.

Personally feel it's a last ditch attempt to reduce the vibrations cheaply, without having to resort to more costly solutions to properly address the issue, in the hope that it will stop the complaints.

As an engineer, I very much doubt this new design will offer any significant improvement, but I'll keep an open mind until I've had it fitted and tried the car.

As the two photos are the front and the back direct comparison is impossible. I say they look very very similar. The bushes do look different, but they could be same - I don't see a photo of other side of the "original" - even a google image search fails to turn anything up. If I were a betting man, I'd slap a fiver down on them being the same.

My husband and I have both been out for a drive with the new damper. Overall, not impressed. The damper makes the drive very heavy, and the buffetting noise from the back end is pretty bad! I don't think the steering vibration is so bad, but I feel the vibration through the seat rather than the wheel now. What used to be a resonance, is now a deep buffeting/shudder. The drive experience itself is worse. My husband wants the damper removed.

My understanding is that some vehicles are worse than others. Some people find the damper is sufficient to settle their concerns, and in those cases it's a cheap fix.

Sounds like this fix does something similar to how mobile phones are made to vibrate, just bolted 2 different bits of the car together to change where the vibration manifests itself

I dont think there is a cheap solution. The fact that eco mode removes a large amount of the vibrations, means to me its a synchronisation issue between the motors. I suspect it requires a new inverter unit that may have new sensors etc

I'm not sure how true that is as I always drive in Normal mode, my front motor isn't used and I still get the vibration.

I joined the motorway last week and got up to 65mph without the front motor kicking in. The vibration/hum kicked in and disappeared at 75mph.

Is your Sport mode broken?!

I tried it tonight in ECO, joined the motorway and got up to 65mph, not once did the front motor kick in.

The vibration/hum is still there though the hum went all Barry White... a deeper sounding hum through the car?
