VOTE TESLA SUPERCHARGES with MG5

Which dealer ? I'm in Leeds and am booked in for update.

See here Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR
Luscombes. I asked about the update on the strength of threads on here when they had it in for some warranty work over Easter, but at that time hadn't tried a Tesla charger to confirm mine was incompatible.

Was yours part of a service bulletin or did you raise it as a specific issue with them?

Luscombe's too, I just went in and walked up to the service desk and asked to book in for the update. No argument, no hassle. I had my 2 year service in January but the update was still up in the air then.

Tried booking 71 PreFL MG5 LR Exclusive in with Islington Motors for Tesla Charging update.

Initially Islington suggested they expected it to be warranty work, but later contacted me to say that MG had issued a bulletin indicating that the software update was "considered to be an enhancement" and was therefore not covered by warranty, so they want to charge £165 for it (their standard diagnostic charge for out of warranty).

I've asked the service dept at Islington to provide me with a screenshot or photo of the bulletin from MG, they've said they're not sure what they're allowed to release but they're going to try and do something.

I'll end up paying the £165 I expect. I worked out that at 4mi/kWh, it'd take 2,200 miles of pure Tesla power (vs generic UK rapid charging at Zap-Map average rate) to recoup the cost - which I'm likely to cover over the lifetime of the vehicle. I also considered that it provides more charger availability, and may have a positive effect on resale value if the update has already been done.

ETA: Islington confirmed that for the 71 PreFL MG5 LR Exclusive, it is a software update only (no new or replacement hardware required), so anyone being quoted e.g. £800 because of additional hardware should perhaps ask to see the bulletin from MG?

you may have seen the supercharger at the Tesla centre just up the road from Luscombe's is now available, makes it handy to check compatibility!

73 Plate FL Trophy. Didn't work on delivery. Had to argue hard to have the software applied as the dealer denied that MGs could charge from Tesla. Eventually got the update and works fine.

Here what I was trying to do above but obviously got it wrong

Tesla Supercharger MG5
It appears there is a lot of confusion about the ability for the MG5 LR to have an update installed to enable the vehicle to be charged on open to all Tesla superchargers so I thought it might be good to to have the ballot below on the situation as it stands.
Les.

So what type of vehicle, have you ?
O Face lifted
O Non Face lift. LR.
O Non face lift. SR.
Year of vehicle.
O 20-21
O 22-23
O. 23-24

As your vehicle been Updated to enable Tesla Superchargers that are open to makes and
Does it now work on Tesla units. ?
O Yes
O No
O Not tried
O Were you asked to or did you pay for this update to be installed. ?
O. Yes
O. No

Have you been refused an update,
or been told no updates for Tesla SC exist for your vehicle by your MG dealership, or they don’t know of one.?
O Yes.
O If you answered yes above have you taken the matter further with MG UK.
O By E-Mail or letter
O Telephone
O Some other means’s maybe trying different dealerships.
Reading this I have a sinking feeling... I have the original 70 plate MG5... Do I assume that even a software update won't work on this?

Someone else should confirm this but I think that if yours is the long range model there is a chance that you already have the right hardware and that a software update is all that is needed.

The original 70 plate didn't have a LR or SR, just a standard 218mile range, the LR was added a year later I think

Face lifted version, registered November 2022 ...

It wouldn't work on Superchargers ...

but yes, it has been been updated to enable Tesla Superchargers ...

and yes, it now works on Tesla units.

The dealer in Kirkcaldy (Arnold Clark) wanted paid even though it was in for a service. Their rate is £140 + VAT per hour.

Through the forum, Frasers of Falkirk were recommended. They did it free with the service.

I don't have a supercharger nearby but had the update done because:

a) we make 3/4 trips a year to Englandshire and can fill up for not much more than half the 79p/kWh that seems to be the 'market rate' on the east coast route,
b) when the time comes, it'll probably be one of the questions a buyer is told to ask. Having the update probably makes the car easier to sell

Presumably there must be some sort of MG Technical Bulletin describing the Tesla update & its applicability? If so, does anyone have details that we can use to 'persuade' reluctant dealers?

This might help

I have seen something more comprehensive lately but I cant find it on facebook at the moment

71 (pre-FL) Asked to have the EVCC update done at Glyn Hokpin, Chelmsford. They said there were no updates showing as required and they couldn't just apply one without it appearing on the diagnostic check.
In related news an update 12 months ago at Tolley's, Colchester, seems to have crippled the charging speeds which are noticeably slower than before then (as evidenced on three occasions where identical MG5s were charging alongside me receiving higher rates of charge at higher states of charge). Yesterday I was getting 23kW @ 50% from a FastNed 300kW charger!!

@TimBA

Is your pre-facelift an SR or an LR? If it is the former I believe it cannot be "updated" to use the Tesla Open Network unless its EVCC (?) is replaced. Other SR users have posted that dealers are asking for payment of up to £1000 for carrying out this work.

As to your second "question" about slower charging rates since a different update; I wonder whether the second garage, perhaps, carried out the "Tesla update" without also replacing the EVCC, assuming that is even possible?

It's a LR, so has the correct EVCC unit. The software update that I am sure crippled the charge rate was applied in Dec 23 so before the 'Tesla' update was released (Jan 24).

Are you sure about that date? My recollection is that it was actually released considerably earlier than that.
It was definitely possible earlier than that because I remember discussing it with my dealer in the second half of 2023 and negotiating that they would include it with my first service in early January 2024.
