Year 4 Service Price

Morning MG Clive. Your insurance quotes are very low, could I ask who you are insured with? My renewal on my Hyndai Bayon was £ 831, up from last year's £ 415, and on enquiring about the MG3 Hybrid they quoted £ 1056! 13+ years no claims and driving for 55 years.
My insurance for the year was £702 no black box and I’ve only been driving 2 years I would definitely look elsewhere for insurance mines through admiral

My quote of £264.98 was from Hastings through Confused.com.

I definitely think this must be a typing error. How can a service be that much??? Even the most expensive cars, such as my Son's Lexus is cheaper than this.

I spoke briefly about this to a head mechanic (not at MG), and he said it would definitely be a timing belt, and they are very time consuming (hence expensive).

Maybe other serving plans don't schedule a timing belt at a fixed service, just wait till it fails.

Yes that makes sense as timing belts can last anything from 40k upwards. So does this mean as part of the MG service at 4 years they replace it regardless? As some timing belts can last a lot more than 40k

I am not mechanically minded or knowledgeable but I wonder if the MG3 hybrid has a “wet” timing belt? That is in oil. In other makes they have had problems with this type of cambelt. Wonder if they are trying to prevent future issues?
Just my thoughts.

I forgot to add (edited now) that this head mechanic is not from MG, so it's not as certain as I accidentally made it sound.

It might be that you get hit with an extra ~£500 when and only when you need that belt. So these figures might be a "worst case" scenario: plan for that, and it won't be more (inflation excepted I suppose), and might well be less.

Some clarity would be helpful, I think. Perhaps @Miles Roberts CG could answer, or find out? Sorry to drag you into this, Miles.

The MG3 Hybrid uses a timing chain, not a timing belt, so it won't require changing in a regular service.

Yes, everything I've seen suggests the 1.5 engine has a chain driven cam.

Hello Ann. I can assure you this is no typing error. I tried all the comparison sites, including those not listed by them. Direct line was the cheapest. Some insurers won't insure men over a certain age even though I have no convictions of any sort. The best I can get when I change to the MG Trophy is £1056.00! Apparently 'ageism' is allowed in the insurance world.
Sorry Ann. I thought you were replying to the insurance quote.

sorry Aitch, I think we have our wires crossed. I was on about the fourth service someone said would cost in excess of £950.
My Insurance is £950 with FORD INSURE

Thanks Ann. As a gentleman I won't ask your age, but I think being on the wrong side of 80 has everything to do with the price I'm paying. Oh well, just have to cough up the extra £230 and hope the MG3 is worth it.

My dealer has quoted a 2 year service plan total as £685.15 for the first two services and could not go beyond this. Am still in shock and now I can see this is more expensive than Bristol Street Motors indicated by MadBaz. Thanks Baz. The plot thickens...

I have contacted Bristol Street regarding pricing and they say they will beat the MG price when they are ready to release their service plan deal, personally l would have thought it should have been prepared to be released same time as the cars went on sale , but what do l know ?‍♂️

Hi MadBaz. I did that very same thing. It too was Bristol. They said the same thing. And while I was waiting to be answered the phone music/advert was pushing MG service, but there isn't one. Wasn't very happy with Bristol attitude so I'm glad Weston super mare are opening a Drive MG soon, and even when that is to be Bristol couldn't say. And also was going to make me go on a 40 mile round trip to show me how to make the front parking sensor chime, which I found out hasn't got a chime. Oh well, hopefully things can only get better.......

The wife has just been quoted for a 3yr service plan + 1st Mot at £1082.56 with Stoneacre. Not too bad for easy monthly costs with what is included The big one although not mentioned in their blurb is on MG Assistance. This alone will potentially save well over a £100 a year on AA recovery, this gets renewed every time it gets serviced at a MG delearship. So brings the true cost down a fair bit by saving a recovery fee.

Hi , l would have thought if you were going to sell a product you should be ready to go with all aspects , from the car to the service plan . Giving them the benefit of the doubt for a couple of weeks if nothing by then l will sort my own plan out with MG directly l think .

Interestingly I found out that the automatic gearbox has to have an oil and filter change every two years this assumes one is doing 15,000 miles a year as automatic boxes normally need this done at 30,000 miles. The cost of doing this is about £215 which explains a big lump in the second year service. Is this really required at say 10,000 miles? To me it sounds like a right rip off if I might only be doing 5000mls a year. Any thoughts?
For the record, my insurance with Admiral is £645 full no claims and very old. My ex MG3 insurer had never heard of the car and quoted a don't want-to-know £2.400 !

An update to my original post , l emailed MG UK Customer Services asking why service 4 is so expensive and got a reply today saying it is because it includes the gearbox service.
That’s as much info as l got , thought l would share it with you all.

Thanks @MadBaz, the perils of owning an auto I guess, although the gearbox service will probably be no more than a change transmission fluid.
