Yellow battery gauge

Can anyone advise why the battery level display has gone yellow instead of green?

I emailed Mg customer services about this when owners were first asking questions about it together with a photo of the infotainment screen with the orange battery indicator that someone had posted.

Our favourite customer service person replied "Are you referring to the 12V indicator or the HV battery indicator and have you spoken with your dealership regarding this?"
Which translates as MG speak for "I don't ? know and stop asking questions."

I think there has also been a response from MG to say it's not expected behaviour/a bug. Backing the I don't know theory, or even worse.

It was definitely behaving differently in regard to the regen - far more coasting than usual while the battery was orange. When getting back to the car after going to the shops it was back to normal. Very strange.

This is weird. I went out to the car to tackle the removal of the light sensor cover (successful, thank you), and when I got into it to run it out of the garage to do this, the infotainment screen looked like this.

The small screen behind the steering wheel is normal, with a green bar showing the state of charge. The car behaved absolutely normally when I moved it out of the garage and on to the driveway, but does anyone have any idea what this orange (amber?) display means? Should I be worried?

Well, it happened to me this evening.

I think I might have ruled out a few more explanations. First, there is no way this was a temperature issue. The day has been mild to warm, and the car was in the garage without any direct sunlight on it.

Second, it isn't a balancing issue. The car was fully charged up over Monday night/Tuesday morning and allowed plenty of time to balance. I checked that it had finished balancing before unplugging the charger.

Why would it be a 12v battery issue under the circumstances? Sure, the car hasn't been used since it was charged up, but that's little more than two days.

I only woke the car up to run it out of the garage to play with the light sensor cover. So it moved a few yards, that's all. I then got out and went round to the passenger side to fiddle with the cover. That's when I took the photo. I then got out and locked the car, before going inside to make a temporary dust cover for the sensor (hopefully I'll get a 3D printed replacement, or I can drill a hole in the original if not). I got back in the passenger side and fitted that. The whole operation didn't take long.

Once I was done I got back into the driver's seat to run the car back into the garage and out of the line of fire of the starlings raising a brood in the eaves. When the infotainment screen came on again, the readout was back to its normal green.

on my MG4 SE the color changes with State of Charge - at about 50% it changes to yellow, and at about 20% it changes to Red.

I've never heard of that before. Mine stays green the entire time - the lowest I've ever been is 19%, but it was still green then. I've never heard anyone else say that theirs changes green-amber-red in a regular manner. But it makes sense for the thing to behave the way Stan1970 describes! Green when you have ample charge, amber when you drop below half-way, and red when you really should be thinking about where your next charge is coming from.

Could it be that it's meant to do that, that the ability of the indicator to turn orange is intended to come into play when you drop below half-full - but there is a stupid bug making it stay green almost always all the time, and just occasionally go amber for the sheer hell of it, irrespective of state of charge?

In the Trophy it goes orange below 6% SoC (in both screens) and it also shows the formidable turtle. Never seen it red, didn't want to go below 1% SoC. ?

Happened to myself a couple of days ago. Rapid charged to 96% and then drove half a mile home. When I stopped I noticed amber battery as image. Locked car got back in and was green again.

Yellow = A charging or discharging fault has been detected.
Green = Charging
Blue = Discharging
White ?

... I've had all 3 + white?, the same is replicated up on the LED's in the charging flap.


EDIT: I think I've had a purple as well : all before I got a genuine MG granny charger (had handshaking issues on the one I originally purchased)

... no worries : I have had the green, blue & yellow (orange in my eyes) on (plus im sure white & purpule on the LEDs in the charging flap), but only associated with charging / i.e. stationary, the yellow came on when i instigated stop charging on the charger, but never an issue as it quickly went to green - which is why i thought it was comms related.

... Only ever seen green when moving though on the in car display.

Bug is still where my money is.

My money is on bug too. My theory about the nature of the bug is that the indicator bar has the capability to display in amber (and probably red) as well as green, and ought to do this deliberately to show whether the SoC is good, middling or "I really hope you know where you're going to get my next charge from!"

However, rather than doing this, it stays green pretty much all the time and only goes amber once in a while, randomly, for the sheer hell of it.

It's interesting that a couple of members have reported that their displays do change colour in a reasonable sequence. Odd that it's so few though, and simply hilarious that MG say they have no idea what is going on.
