MG4 Software Update Thread

Well, it’s in for the LKA update. Interestingly I was asked who told me I needed it. Said it had tried to forcefully send me into a different lane on the motorway for no reason and that my sales person had also told me the updates hadn’t been done at PDI.

Also had the Bluetooth drop again this morning (although Spotify was playing quite happily via Bluetooth but car just couldn’t see the phone) and the voice guidance on the built in Sat Nav decided not to speak to me while going cross country to my dealer rather than M25/M23 as the M25 junction was carnage, so not ideal. I reported that too.

Not had any messages on iSmart yet so they’ve seemingly not started. Didn’t ask for a courtesy car in the end as I need it back for a trip so I thought I’d wait in the nearby town. Why do I always seem to find a McDonalds before anything else? ???

Car is back now.

I asked what had been done as I’d had a flurry of messages not long after my previous post.

They were very cagey. They wouldn’t let me see the work sheet, but did confirm that LKA has been fixed under warranty as part of a TSB (technical service bulletin) but gave no TSB reference number. The guy did say cryptically that other modules were up to date now too but didn’t elaborate any more and there was nothing else on the worksheet, apparently.

To me, it’s clear there are fixes for issues that MG are aware of, however unless your actively experiencing or have experienced and can detail that experience then they’ll not actively recall if you’re not seeing issues.

I asked about the Bluetooth drops and missing Sat nav voice (both of which were working on the way back), but they said they’d not found an issue and to keep an eye on it. Infotainment system was still at R30 when collected too.

However, the lane keeping stuff seems much better.

I kept all the settings as per startup on the way back and checked they were all on, and had no dramas whatsoever. I tried just drifting in the lane to either side and the car didn’t jerk around, and then deliberately crossed into the other lane without indicating. I got a slight vibration and an audible alert, but again no dramatic jerks of the steering wheel.

I will caveat this as when I had the issue before the roads were dark and very wet, so the conditions in which I experienced the issue and where I’ve tested deliberately are very different scenarios, however it’s looking much better so far, and hopefully it’ll be just as good on my trip later this afternoon.

EDIT: oh, and these were the alerts I got while the work was being done so I imagine there may have been updates for these components/modules too.

They were very cagey......
My dealership weren't forthcoming when I took my Trophy back for updates soon after I'd bought the car, either (PDI process failure !?). This lack of openness doesn't promote a good relationship between the dealership and the customer. Why are they so obstructive?
In retrospect, maybe they find the update process so difficult that they lack confidence that an update has been successfully incorporated ?

Agreed. It makes no sense to not be open and transparent as it builds confidence with the dealer, however the suspicion in which we’re viewed when asking what was done and the lack of information harms the dealers.

I can only assume it’s a directive from MG to not give any detail. Can’t think it benefits the dealers at all.

After my software updates, earlier this week, I seem to have lost external temperature from the infotainment display. Sure it was there before ?
Did you have the infotainment system upgrade? Apologies if you mentioned it elsewhere, I must have missed that.

Yeah, that was one of the three updates.
R16 Infotainment (SE) loses the external temp indication.
Oh, interesting. Any idea why, intentional or accidental?

I've got outside temperature with a car built in January and which allegedly had all the software updated on 13th April. I'm happy with it as it is (or at least, the niggles that are niggling me are clearly not sorted for anyone else) but does this mean it doesn't have the latest update?

Sorry if the answer has long been known and I've not read it but I take it you can't do any of your own software updates from the car without it having to go to the dealer to do? In the settings of the car you can check for updates however when they are available can you install them (much like you would on a mobile phone) or is it dealer authorised only? Bit annoying if so. Thought I had seen before getting the car that it supported OTA which if so, led me to think it was done much like on regular devices we have in our homes. Anyone clarify?

Has there been any update so you don't have to input your settings every time you get in the car
There won't be as this is due to NCAP/WLTP rules that changed recently, new cars tested cannot assume who is driving (may not be last driver) and must default to all safety systems on, so we must select our settings each time we get in the car.

MG could make this easier and simpler to do, but for the moment it is going through the menus to switch the settings.

This guy lost the outside temp, listen to what the dealer said to him, customer service with a .....
Thanks for sharing this. Remember watching his videos while waiting delivery of mine. What a horrendous ownership experience for him, quite frankly, appalling service from MG. It seems the quality of service and support varies enormously from dealer to dealer, though this is probably the case for many car brands? I must say the service and support I've had from MG Beaconsfield over the last couple of weeks have been very good.

That's weird. I always had to sign a sheet for any and every single update they did. Last time there were four different sheets, IIRC. It was the LKA update, the heater update and two other ones that were due and that I wasn't even aware of beforehand. Every sheet and update had a specific code (HE-32 in case of the heater update, I forgot the other ones). If I understood correctly they can't charge the bill on MG's tab if they don't do proper documentation.
