MG4 Range

Not sure if this is good charging rate?Supercharging in Aberystwyth, it was pulling 49kw at 85% and 28kw at 90%

I think it was pulling 54kw at 80%.

I was more than happy, we went to McD and ordered a takeaway, came back to the car 10mins later and it was already at 73%, too fast, ?
I'll try those Superchargers next time I'm in Aber, I expect.

There's also LOADS of chargers in the National Library car park. 9 DC, 30 AC. The DC ones are 75kW, not 50 as ZapMap claims. There's a cafe and exhibitions in the building, although closed on a Sunday, and a fantastic view over Aberystwyth.

Oh yes, I know about it, it must be new because I’m fairly sure it wasn’t there when I went to Aberystwyth last year.
BTW, you need your own cable for the AC chargers.

I have my own Type 2 cable because the lease company chuck one in. Good thing too, because a lot of our charge is from my wife's workplace untethered AC charger.

But IMO everyone should have one, and be in the habit of using public AC chargers in preference to DC chargers whenever you're not mid-route.

Rapid charging is often actively inconvenient. Too slow to want to stay with the car. Too quick to be able to leave for a reasonable amount of time. It's a chore. And the chore of refuelling is something we went electric to avoid!

So, sure, if you're pausing in the middle of a long journey, put it to rapid charge, grab a hamburger and use the loo, return to the car.

But, it's a better experience all round, if you're going to that place anyway, to plug into a 7kW charger, do the thing you went to do (it's several hours, right, or else why did you drive so far?) come back to a charged car.

ALTHOUGH last time I was in Aberystwyth, my plan was to do that at the Tesco PodPoint. After 3 hours it had given me 11kWh so I had to go rapid.

Don't think I'll see this range again for a while as the temp starts to drop.

I recently had a chance to drive a 2020 petrol Golf for a business trip from Warrington to Sheffield and back so thought I would see what it could do efficiency wise.

I think the mpg figures put into perspective what kind of driving is required to get 4.5+ mi/kWh in the MG4. This is for the return via the M1 and M62:

You did 94 miles at 78.7mpg so used 1.19 gallons or 4.5litres of petrol @ £1.59/litre so the trip cost £7.16

MG4 with AC on doing 70mph, averaging for arguments sake, 3m/kWh would use 31.3kWh and charging at home would be 9.5p/kWh which would cost you £2.97

Agreed. However, I'm only on a standard tariff so it's currently 28.26 p/kWh making the cost £6.72 at 4 mi/kWh. Still cheaper, but not great. If it was charged at Instavolt then it would be £19.98.

That isn't why I uploaded it though. It was more to illustrate what kind of economy in an ICE translates to higher mi/kWh readings. Some people might wonder why they can't get higher than 3.5 mi/kWh when they were only getting 40 mpg before in their ICE car.

That good going on the MPG figures, I bet you had to drive like a granny with a bowl of trifle on the passenger seat to get that ;)

Absolutely, I think the MG4 would give me 4.7-5 mi/kWh driven like that. One thing to consider though is that the Golf would give you unlimited free heating in winter.

It had something called "2 cylinder mode" which activated when the engine load was low enough. That meant having to try to build up speed on the flat so that I could scrub off speed on the uphill parts without the other cylinders kicking in.

LKA worked perfectly and ACC was so much better than the MG4 but, other than that, it was worse in every other way. It's fun to go back to a manual ICE car every now and again. Kind of like how people enjoy driving traction engines around but wouldn't want to commute using one.

Yes, going back to ICE is a novelty isn't it, but I wouldn't want one full-time. Funny how things have changed.

Cylinders? (nostalgic sigh)

Following on from my previous monthly posts, here's my efficiency for October. This was anything but a routine month as I've been in the south of France for the whole of October. So, roughly 2,000 of those miles were motorway and temperatures were warmer than the UK. The two factors probably cancel each other out. Average monthly efficiency so far has been May 3.8; June 3.9; July 3.6; August 3.7; September 3.7; October 3.5.

Eco definitely affects the heating/cooling, it's why I tried ECO once and have kept in NORMAL ever since. I've also set it for maximum air circulation when using AUTO on the climate, gets the cabin temperature to where you want it a lot quicker.
If you go onto the heater screen, there is a settings tab bottom left. Click on this then you have an option to turn on/off the "follow Eco mode". this comes default set to put heating into Eco if you put driving style to Eco.

Winter range estimation at full battery seems to be way off - it is constantly showing 270 kilometers at 100%, but only about 110km at 50% despite efficiency being the same all the time (~20kWh/100km). I have used equalization charging frequently. It would seem the estimation at full battery is not based on history data, instead the algorithm has been deliberately made a bit too optimistic.

I believe the LFP battery pack is more energy dense between 50-100% than it is between 0-50%, so it's not a true linear depletion of energy. Thus 100% SoC range showing more than double the 50% SoC range is not unusual. :)
