MG4 Software Update Thread

This LKA thing is one of the worst "safety features" I've ever seen under any context. It actually encourages driving drunk/tired and is incredibly dangerous on snowy finnish roads if left on. The 5-star NCAP rating sounds like a joke because I would not give a single star for safety if this thing is on. When off, the car is superb. And for me, I constantly keep forgetting to turn if off, because I've never needed it before and it'll take a while before I learn to use indicators to dodge every single pothole, snowpile etc. that are oh-so-common on our inferior roads.

Sorry, just had to vent a bit.

Vent away. Entirely justified. It's easier to remember to turn it off before you start, or to turn it off on the fly if you notice the icon isn't yellow, than to use the indicators to dodge road defects. The only time I leave it on is if I'm not leaving the 30 mph zone, because it doesn't operate below about 35 mph.

MG could easily release an update that make the LKA behavior to not activate, unless the road markings are good. But I've asked many times if someone have requested a firmware update to make the LKA behave better without getting any answer.

We are making assumptions that we are 'average' drivers. I wonder how many drivers understand what LKA is and can be bothered to plough though a 400 page manual (if they can find it) to learn how to turn it off?

I think there's an issue where they're allegedly doing this so that drivers getting into an unfamiliar car will get a standardised setting, but this is unrealistic.

In the summer a friend and I had a hire car (an ICE) with LKA on it. Her own car is a 10 year old Polo and she had no idea what the thing was trying to do to her. At least I was there and had had experience with LKA and was able to explain it to her. But someone completely unaware of what LKA is could be seriously spooked by the thing. I think I'd be taking it back complaining about a fault.

Very true, it ain't just budget MGs that the LKA is a PITA with. A mate of bought a Porsche Taycan recently, was quite happy with it for a week - until he brought it in some Twisties and thought there was something seriously wrong with handling, until he twigged to switch off the LKA, he said it transformed it to a different car.
Two things for what it's worth, the Taycan is 3x price of MG4, and the LKA wasn't an issue (noticeable) until pushing it on the twisties.
Also before someone else says it, apologies for wandering down the LKA rabbit warren and off topic of SW updates?

Do any updates happen over your home Wi-Fi, or do you always have to go to a dealership? If this is the case I don’t really understand why. Especially as there are so many bugs to fix, as we all know! And it seems that MG never contact the owners to ask them to come in and get an update, despite the fact that the updates are really rather important.

I’m still on R33 on my Trophy and am fed-up with sporadically needing to re-pair my mobile phone.

It should be possible to update the infotainment, but they never activated it. I'm starting to believe they added the option just so they could lie about the car being able to update itself.

BTW, I'm on R46 (which I was told would solve the issue) but I still have to pair my phone once a week, so I wouldn't bother if I were you. Just wait for the next update to be released.

Seriously, have they activated updates on any previous MG?

Updates never happen over wifi or 4G - that's possible future functionality only.

Updates occur at the dealer either via a laptop with an ODB2 connection or in the case of the infotainment also possible via a USB stick.

Why did they market it otherwise, and give us the option within settings then? You say never and possible future at the same time.

I don't know - I presume they expected to enable it at some point and then didn't, perhaps because the update process can be unreliable even when done by a dealer, sometimes cars get bricked.

I said never because nobody has ever reported that function to have worked as far as I have heard.

I say possible future because MG could enable it at some point, if they wanted to.

Remember also: this feature was only for infotainment updates, they've never promised car module updates over the air.

They're still advertising it on their website at being able to receive OTA updates. Can't see the module updates ever being made available OTA though for this or pretty much any manufacturer's car. Way too dangerous if something goes wrong and it's a module linked to a safety feature.
