MG4 Software Update Thread

That's good to hear.

For myself, my car is going in for diagnostics on some issues next week, but even if they fix the AEB and LKA issues, I will still need to go into the settings to turn off the speed limit reader which constantly gets the speed limits wrong.

Definitely looking in our next car for something that supports driver profiles and makes it trivial to select my settings without a preflight. Be nice if it booted up quickly too.
Well it went in and I got another update for the eSOS phone (again - third or fourth ipdate for this) which keeps failing with errors. We will see if this works. If not, I will have to see if I can remove the fuse to disable the system.

Despite not being in the garage since March, there was no update available for AEB. The official advice was simply to turn it off, which is what I am doing anyway, but it isn't really good enough... stuff should work that included with the car.

I did receive R59, but it still has most of the bugs R46 had, so it doesn't really help me much. I have to change 5-6 settings for each journey so an ELK shortcut doesn't help me.

I think my patience has run out. Our next car will not be an MG.

Very similar experience to me (minus the esos issue). The last thing that we should ever be beta testing are the safety systems.

My garage told me it's just how the systems function. They also told me I'm not the only one who has complained, it was a common groan for them from customers.

I'd probably feel grumpier about it all if I bought the car outright but when it's a salary sacrifice lease car, a large part of me doesn't see the point. It'll go back after its term and I'll go to a proper car manufacturer.

But saying all that, it's an absolute hoot to drive! Which I think makes it worse. If it was just rubbish all round that would be easier almost! The fact it's excellent to drive, great fun, comfortable and a relaxing cruiser is more frustrating!

I love the car, it is brilliant, but the software and service side is just terrible compared to what I am used to. I agree, this is not a bad product, it is a great product that is marred by things that should be easy to fix. It is maddening. I don't regret buying it, but I won't repeat that based on my experience living with the car.

I've given MG two years to see if they can improve on software and service and the reports everyone posts here (and my own experience) seems exactly the same as it was two years ago.

They have eventually fixed some things, like the oil leak and the undertray but slowly and without any proactive communication. I had to wait FOUR MONTHS for AC charging to be fixed, which took FOUR visits to get fully resolved, during which I was paying Rapid charging prices throughout.

Such a shame. This is potentially one of the best manufacturers but they clearly do not care enough to fix these problems.

SAme here, I will not buy another MG I hear Tesla calling.

Yeah I just wish the Tesla model 2 actually sees the light of day and it's sub 30k. Otherwise it would be a used model 3 but I don't really need a bigger car.
I imagine that is years away since it hasn't even been unveiled and it is normally years from announcement to production in the US plus a year to get RHD in UK.

I bought it on June 30 last year, and I keep checking for updates, but it always says there’s nothing.
During a scheduled maintenance two months ago, they also said there were no updates.

I don't think "over the air" (OTA) updates have been activated/permitted in many countries yet, so the only way to get updates is via a dealer. They're only likely to do an update if you complain about a specific issue that an update might address.

At this point I doubt they will ever do OTA.
Yes - the issue I imagine that makes then pause with OTA, is you have to have a pretty robust system for carrying out end user updates.

i.e. it has to be able to cope with any possible failures and have a clear path to be able to rollback if necessary, otherwise you can end up with "bricked" head units that necessitate a dealer visit (or worst case, vehicle recovery!), neither of which would be great for them.

The situation is probably made worse when you have lots of different software components on the car, many of which would never be user updateable, but which can all have pathways to communicate with the infotainment system, and therefore a large number of permutations of possible conflicts...

Хлопці, вже час українську гілку на форумі впроваджувати! :-D

Guys, it's time to implement a Ukrainian branch on the forum!

Every day I see a minimum of one MG4 in our Niko-city! And, 6 more of them waiting at out local dealer.

The dealer, by the way, is useless — they claim they don't "have access" to the fresh R59 firmware version here in Ukraine...

I find that my left star button occasionally loses its setting ... not sure if it coincides with a 100% + balance charge, or whether that is just coincidence. (I had it yesterday, just after doing a full charge).
Mine definitely is more likely to forget it after a charge to 100%, but every now and then also just randomly loses the setting I suspect after a top-up charge.

A relatively minor issue, but actually drives me crazy as in wet/slippery road conditions I often set the drive mode to 'Snow' ... so pretty annoying when already on the road and pushing the button gets no response and need to navigate through the menus to reset it :/

(And before anyone asks... yes I could set the right star to Drive Mode instead but that button still always launches CarPlay no matter what it's set to ?‍♂️ )

We have an MG4 Trophy LR (September 2023). It had its first service today(8,200 miles).

The dealer says that they updated the Infotainment software to R59 ( we were R40).

However the system screen is still showing R40. I called them and they swear blind the their computers are showing the car has been upgraded to R59.

Any one else had this?

What differences should I be seeing ? Can anyone with R59 assist please?

Thanks

This R46 that's out and about, has anyone used it? I'm just checking on the file layout. What should be on the root of the usb? I noticed another zip file in the main folder, this correct?
Also in the engineer menu where you can start the update, there are several options. Do you choose infotainment?

Any other info about this procedure would be smashing

Of course, your own risk, might brick it, you're a naughty boy....etc. etc
I know the comment is a bit old but I did this update today from these files, I wanted R46 over R59 as android auto is said to work better
I tried it in the core86 folder but that didn't work but having the 2 files & AVN folder in the root worked

Left side is for trophy, right side is se

Swipe down the screen, does it have LKA along with Auto hold / Hot spot etc

@haloweenhamster thanks for the detailed post, I've been sitting on those files forever and never have got around to trying them. Dealers always give a story about it costing x an hour and will probably not be covered under warranty etc... I figured by now if anyone had had any bad experience with them then we would have found out ;)

I think I will try them out today. I am on:

Entertainment System version
SWI68-29958-1300R30

Telecommunication version
SNAKP18E32

So hopefully it works for me too.

EDIT: Yep, took a whole ten minutes of my time! Easy upgrade. No idea why I didn't do it months ago. I can immediately see that I have the left star bug but I can live with that. Screen is noticeably more responsive and I have the new AC controls.

I re-read the instructions and actually upgraded the Infotainment ECU as well this time, and now the left star button works just fine. I wonder if for all those with this fault it was simply user error and the Infotainment ECU was not updated, just the AVN MPU.

Time to do the 2023Q4 maps upgrade now...

Woops I missed that step as well, I best finish mine ?
Interesting you mention that the MG techs may also be missing a step, I can easily believe it, especially after an interaction with a supposed MG tech on Facebook today

I'll try my star buttons before & after

Hope you're enjoying the newer version, main reason I wanted it was for the top bar when using android auto for HVAC etc

Yeah easy to miss since it says 'update complete' after the first.

  • You need to do the AVN MPU update, let it restart and you get the 'update complete' message. If you didn't do the MCU update last time you'll probably may have to do this step again. Car needs to be in P and not in READY mode here.
  • then go BACK into settings and do the MCU update and let that restart (note: if you get the error 'Power assembly in HV' you just need to put your foot on the brake to put the car in READY mode)
  • it'll restart again and you can test the star button

I'll report back after the weekend, need to test out a few things :)
