MG4 Software Update Thread

Hi guys, i have the Chinese version of MG4 (Mulan 2022). A lot of things are chinese which i cant read and carplay doesn’t work, attached is system information.

Did anyone with a similar car have any luck flashing the infotainment with a European or Australian os version? I talked to the my local dealership and they cleared responsibility of the car as i imported it (it was ~$13k cheaper) from China.

On a side note, the front left tweeter is substantially louder than the rest of the speakers and i cant seem to be able to control the sound balance

I’m not sure how different the Chinese versions are compared to the European or Australian ones. However, flashing a EU/Aus-NZ release onto your system likely ranges from complicated to outright impossible.

In your specific case, if anything goes wrong, as you said, you will probably not be able to get any assistance from your dealer, as he is not familiar with Chinese domestic market cars. As far as I know, no Chinese releases are available online to roll back to the stock configuration if needed.

The risk of ending up completely stuck is way too high!

Hello everyone, for MAJ, everything is OK on my side:

Only thing, I can't update the software concerning the BMS

do you have an idea?
Hi, you need to re-enable the EVCC so that it turns green, so to do this, you need to connect the type 2 cable during the SIPS connection, then you click on refresh, once the EVCC is green you can stop charging and remove the type 2 connector.
To return to your BMS update, you need to connect an external power supply and start the request again, if this does not work, trick with a configuration first then a reprogramming.

Hello all. I just spent few days reading pretty much all the pages on this thread.

I am an MG4 owner from Colombia. I have had the car for about a month now. I really like the car, it drives nicely. But I have issues with CarPlay as it disconnects somewhat frequently. At first I thought it was some kind of cable issue, but after trying several cables (including the original one) I still had trouble so now I suspect this is an infotainment software issue.

Honestly MG started selling cars here like a year ago or so and there are quite a few things missing. Comparing to what people share here, I had to really dig to understand what I am using. Here they sell "Plus" then "Deluxe" and "AWD" versions. By all the things you guys mention here, I have a Deluxe which I think is the same as a "Trophy" version???

Anyway, I am currently on R40 apparently:

I am technically savvy so I figured I want to try to update by myself.

There is no app support (car will not pair to app and such). I never cared about pairing to Bluetooth as I always use CarPlay all the time. But when I read the instructions here, I noticed I am supposed to dial a code on the keypad. But guess what, I cannot do that as the car does not pair to my iPhone for some reason (phone does not get detected):

And since there is no Bluetooth connection, no way to dial the code:

I am out of luck right?

Also, there is no app support here so there are too many things I cannot operate remotely.

I think I am going to do a full review of this car at some point with all the good, the bad, a wishlist and some other random comments.

There seem to be settings in Advanced menu in Engineering mode, that specify the circulation country of the car and things like left-right drive mode etc. In the following video, at 2:50 approx. you see page 6 of such a menu, with such settings. In the minutes preceeding this you are shown how to get there.

Given it is about an MG HS, interestingly I believe a Mulan version... it's in Chinese and the narrator has translated
I certainly don't know if you can change all the things you should/want to make it more like the native model in your case, nor do I know the shortcomings or their possible implications, to car functionality or warranty.
But I think it may be a start if you want to research it.
Also note the folks at --this forum-click here-- thread are researching the Android Automotive OS, for the MG4. Though the OS of the infotainment is not the same as the complete vehicle systems, it does interface with them and may help you localize.

Good luck! and keep us posted, if you want

For the higher end model (known as Trophy or Essence):

  • Open the car settings, tap the version number 5 times.
  • Enter the password 200519 to enter the engineering menu
  • Select the ADB menu item
This is the how, I'm not advocating you do the rest yourself. Your responsibility.

Many thanks. Not sure how I missed this. With this, I got to this screen:

And then within "USB Upgrade":

I think you mean DAB? Or should I go under each option in that list and hit update?

Thanks again.

USB upgrade is where you'd do the upgrades listed here and in the Google drives etc.

This thread is huge.
It's not 5000 posts yet, but coming close. At least the threads with most of the programming information are shorter. If someone in the know wants to post a set of links to the most useful posts, Mention me (@Coulomb) and I'm happy to move them to the first post of the relevant thread. ]

@yllanos do you need access to the phone keypad to get into the engineering menu in the Trophy/Deluxe? You do for the SE/Standard/Excite, but I thought access was a different method for the Trophy/Deluxe.
On the Trophy, opening the engineering menu pops up a keypad for you to enter the passcode.

Yeah I got it.

But I am still failing miserably with this upgrade. For starters, I am getting this message when I connect my USB stick:

And when I choose AVN MPU from the list and hit upgrade, I get this message

Not sure what is going on.

BTW, what do they mean by "Please keep the power assembly in HV"? Is this keeping the car ON?

Thanks

EDIT: This is the status of my USB stick:

I would try again, only copying the needed files to the USB stick. Delete something else like Android or maps.

Update: OK I figured it out.

1. Yes, the car needs to be ON.
2. My first two tries were using NTFS and then FAT32. Neither of them worked. I then tried with exFAT and that did work.

I did I went into ENG. menu and first went into "AVN MPU" option and updated. Then after reboot went into "Telematic Box ECU" and updated.

That was it.

I will be testing this extensively in the coming days and report back.

One of the reasons this thread is long is that people are trying to solve their own issue and diluting the discovery process.

A long thread is not necessarily bad, reading the thread is education in itself. Not being aware of the trial and error process that is advancing the knowledge base risks a newcomer to the thread thinking this is a panacea without risk.

My hat is off to the core contributors here, thank you for your groundbreaking.

I’d rather see people take the time to figure things out than blindly follow a tutorial and end up stuck. Understanding the process is far better than risking to brick their car.

We’re not talking about a EUR 200 phone here!
