A NOT SO short update on our British Gas Hive EV charger installation.

So many holier than thou types around......... People who never broke a lockdown rule ?

Complete witch hunt against Boris as we all know.
Yes, lots of ordinary, everyday folk broke lockdown rules. Mind you, they weren't the ones who were making those self same rules for the rest of us and then pontificating about the crucial importance of obeying them on national TV every night. And then lying about their own lawbreaking, even when confronted with video evidence of it. So many sleazier than thou types around...

Anyway, back to the thread...

Helped daughter install a Hive central heating controller.

Based on my experience with her Hive, I'm glad I opted for a Drayton Wiser for myself. Only a few small problems over the past 3 years and the few times I've needed it, the support has been exemplary.

Just have to say that we have a Hive Heating controller, installed by BG some years ago and it's been absolutely great, no problems at all!

But we do NOT have BG as our gas or electricity supplier!

During lockdown, I decided to upgrade my controller to Drayton Wiser. Her Indoors now bosses Alexa around to turn the heat up or down instead of me. :)

What is it they say, never discuss politics or religion? I bet David Cairns, Labour Member of Parliament for Inverclyde used to feel lonely, being a Roman Catholic preist as well. :)

Lol, I didn’t break the lock down rules, but that aside government should lead by example. And yes I am a Tory!
Yes I agree.
I never broke any lock-down rules either mainly because I'm clinically extremely vulnerable due to a compromised immune system which gave me an added incentive as I didn't want to run the risk of dying.

A NOT SO short update on our British Gas Hive EV charger installation.

EV charger update 8th July.
Smell of old electrical insulation burning by our distribution board, and mains 100amp fuse warm.
Nothing on the consumer side of the main fuse is warm or showing any signs of overloading, nothing tripped on distribution board.

Edit: I can only think that the EV chargers CT coil on the positive feed is not doing what it should, by limiting total load current!

EV charger isolated, British Gas and SSEN contacted. Their EV Charger department doesn't work weekend!!!!

Oh, the fun of EV ownership !

You must have some huge loads on or theres something seriously wrong with your electrical supply. You should contact your DNO for issues with the service head, they will send someone out straight away.

Youre suggesting that your load is over the capacity of the service head (hence why it's getting warm). The main fuse if it's 100 amp will run at 200 amps for a considerable time before it blows and it will run at 100 amps with very little heating. The fact that you have heating in there can only be a poor connection OR a huge load.

The purpose of the Current Transformer is for the Hive unit to sense the current flow, if a limit has been set it would instruct the car to take less power during charging as that limit is approached. It's highly unlikely to be this at fault unless you have other loads totalling 100 amp or 25 kW in round figures and you had the car on charge at 32 amps.

No really, it's the fun of dealing with BG possibly but more likely a supply issue.

I did ?

So high resistance joint between fuse and the static carrier. The heat was along the length of the fuse holder (but would have dissipated over night).

Yes I was aware of that, thank you?

Fun!?!?! Now, boiling my head is fun compared with this LOL ?

Just discovered brown pitch leaking from the bottom of the fuse holder. Old fuse just given up the will to live I guess!! ?.
That may be insulation from the cable depending how old it is. Better get that vehicle to house running for when the power is off!

Network provider should be with us in 2-3 hours. All good. ?
Thats good to hear, the last you need is a fire on top of all the BG grief.

Thanks John,
One of the fuse holders forks was very badly burnt, hours off becoming a fire he told me!
Said fuse holder had been moved, putting stress on the tail, together with fuse being removed a couple of times in the last few weeks didn’t help.
Fuse and holder replaced, tail covered with shrink sleeving. All up and running again, just have to wait a day or so for the smell to dissipate. ??

The incoming energy supply lie / cable to the property and the service head.
Which in turns houses the main cut out fuse, is total responsibility of your DNO.
