Does the XPower have any peers?

Yes you could always buy something 3 years old as an alternative to a new car.

But they aren't fair comparisons then - what will the XPower cost 3 years old and what will MG be offering in 3 year's time?
I guess it's about what your budget allows at any given time and what the alternatives are. The way things are going you are likely to be able to pick up a 3 year old XPower for under £20,000.

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of what would be a viable replacement for the XPower when the time comes, suspect there will also be a shed load of Taycan's for similar money to a new XPower in a couple of years

Based on present MG 4 depreciation rates you'll easily be able to pick up a 1-year old XPower for £20,000. I have seen 5-month old Extended Range MG 4's going for £24,000.

Yes and remember also values may recover as supply and demand get closer to equilibrium, currently second hand EVs are cheap but it isn't long since they weren't and that could happen again.

Yes, used Taycans will be ten a penny - BUT the repair and servicing costs and warranty small print will matter a lot.

Porsche parts are legendarily expensive.

No.
No.
No.?
Sweet handling but NO.
I would have one, but far too small and impractical.
No.
No.
No.

There are faster cars of course,
but they will be much more expensive and compromised in the day to day driving that I do most of the time.

Cheaper better handling cars? yes, but nothing anywhere near 435bhp.

The MG4 X Power is one of the best all rounders I have ever owned, and my own personal power station to boot.

It does everything I need of it very well indeed, and didn't cost me a fortune.

It was £97 to service this year.
Is tax free for another year, and is less than £350 to insure.

Bargain!?

Biased Biased Biased Biased ?
All of these cars are faster and probably just as nice to drive.

Unbiased

Faster as in Top Speed, yes. But that's it.
And yes, probably nice to drive.
But mind blowing acceleration (which let's face it, that's what 99% of us want) for a ridiculously cheap price, then no, it's got no peers at the moment, and probably never will. ??

And where exactly on the road can you use the top speed advantage?
Nowhere.

Where can I use my devastating acceleration?
Everywhere.

Over here I can get from 0 to 20 in about 1 second. ?

No, faster around the track - and that is the acid test for a hot hatch.

Feel like this might have to be an agree to disagree, loads been argued about the definition of a hot hatch on here already.

I'm in Northumberland for the next few days with family including my old man. He drives a 2019 Focus ST so am going to see if he fancies taking the XPOWER out for a blast to compare. Shall report back!

Handling wise, the Focus ST is probably better. But for the average bloke, the X Power has more than good enough handling. BUT the acceleration will blow his mind! Compared to the ST. Tell him to take a change of pants with him. ??

Yes, that would be very interesting to hear pal.

I believe @salty was an ST Wheelsman, so will be able to avail us of some considerable knowledge and insight in all things Focus ST.

Oh and.....on the subject of handling, having done 1000's of laps in varied machinery over the years, I can tell you this....

The X Power will be shocking, and not in a good way.

It's one of the reasons I've not Tracked it to date, and don't plan too either.

It is just too heavy, for on the limit driving with seats that will not keep you in place.

It would be like wrestling a slippery bear (and I should know)

I took my VXR8 to Spa and that is an equivalent weight to my XP, but with figure hugging seats.

Tremendous fun all the same, and superb on the straight bits!!???

The XP would also be a great deal of fun I'm sure, but I think it would be a considerable effort to hang on too and I'm not getting any younger.

Top and bottom piccie is at Brands Hatch on the way to Spa later that week.

As promised, took 71 year old father out for a spin round Northumberland's roads. For context he currently drives a 2019 Focus ST, third he's had since a Mondeo ST220 years back. Not an expert on hot hatches but loves the ST in all the forms he's had. Our first time around Bamburgh, Alnwick and Seahouses- would strongly recommend but that would be a different thread. Feedback paraphrased below (roads up to NSL fyi):

"Jesus Christ- and this is a family car!"

"Ease of acceleration is ridiculous- how do you know when you're too quick? [We were at 45 but he said he thought it was over 60]"

"Suspension feels similar to ST over bumps, quite taut but not as level through corners"

"Tyres feel new, scrabble a bit when you push or if there's any debris"

"Doesn't feel overly heavy- manages to hide its weight really well. Brakes pretty decent but don't like the regen"

"Still think I'd beat you round a track!"

And general comments:

"You wouldn't know it's that cheap- the screen is no slower than the ST"

"The fact you can fit 3 car seats in the back, have that performance AND at that price is unbelievable"

"You can't be high and mighty about being green if you get a car shipped from China. But then I eat meat and drive petrol so who am I to say!"

Would you buy one?

"Not since I read the Ioniq 5N review! Love the turn of pace but feel a bit removed. Seat feels high. So quick though!"

Take what you will from the above re MG4 and peers but one person was impressed and more likely to go EV when the time comes.

Anyway, says who?
Show me the evidence......

Well, this video is reasonable evidence, and it's one which has been posted several times in the support of the X-powers abilities.

The X-power was significantly beaten by the Kona N, i20N and i30N, Civic Type R (two generations), GR Yaris. All cars on the list you responded to.

Given the fact that the i20 (for example) takes 6.2 seconds to do the 0 - 62mph dash, I think this is pretty good demonstration of how poor the X-power is on the brakes and through the corners given the huge amount time that it should have gained in every acceleration zone.

Don't get me wrong, I really like my X-power, it's a great daily driver with almost certainly the best overtaking ability of any car I've ever owned. If you've got a commute like mine, the 45 - 70mph performance is FAR more useful than any traffic light sprint.

But in terms of handling, braking, driver feel etc it's definitely more in the 'family hatch' than 'hot hatch' category in my opinion.

That's fine by me, as that's exactly what I wanted it for and it does that job brilliantly. I've got a sports car on the drive to cover the 'performance car' aspect of my life (although the X-power would give it a run for its money in a straight line!)
