Does the XPower have any peers?

Well, this video is reasonable evidence, and it's one which has been posted several times in the support of the X-powers abilities.

The X-power was significantly beaten by the Kona N, i20N and i30N, Civic Type R (two generations), GR Yaris. All cars on the list you responded to.

Given the fact that the i20 (for example) takes 6.2 seconds to do the 0 - 62mph dash, I think this is pretty good demonstration of how poor the X-power is on the brakes and through the corners given the huge amount time that it should have gained in every acceleration zone.

Don't get me wrong, I really like my X-power, it's a great daily driver with almost certainly the best overtaking ability of any car I've ever owned. If you've got a commute like mine, the 45 - 70mph performance is FAR more useful than any traffic light sprint.

But in terms of handling, braking, driver feel etc it's definitely more in the 'family hatch' than 'hot hatch' category in my opinion.

That's fine by me, as that's exactly what I wanted it for and it does that job brilliantly. I've got a sports car on the drive to cover the 'performance car' aspect of my life (although the X-power would give it a run for its money in a straight line!)

At last!

Some evidence.

Do you have a link for that?
I have been on Cinch youtube and can't seem to find that particular video.

Like you, my car is a daily, and is unbeatable at the business of just being a great practical, fast, hatchback.

I too, have never before had this level of instant overtaking ability in a car before and have had some properly quick stuff over the years.

I will still defend its contested 'Hot Hatch' moniker, because you simply can't get away from how fast it is, and it's bodystyle.

The daft thing is, my last proper Hot Hatch was my 2013 Mini GP, and I'm fairly sure it wouldn't see which way my X Power had gone!

My only real proof would be to do a Track Day at Snetterton and compare times.

What's great about this forum is you can have some properly good discussions/banter, without folk getting too carried away with it all.
(And if they do, they get banned!?)

Hasn't always been the case on some dedicated performance car forums I've frequented over the years!

Yeah, here's the link:

Hot Hatch obviously isn't a defined term, but for me personally it's weighted more in terms of handling, braking, feel etc than it is straight line speed. And I think most professional motor journalists feel the same way, hence a lot of people disagreeing with some of the reviews. Put it this way, if you took a bottom of the range Fiesta and tuned the engine to 400bhp but did nothing else, to me that wouldn't make it a 'hot hatch'.

Just as a matter of interest, you might like watching my best lap from Snetterton in the car that sits alongside my X-power.

Will do and thanks for the link.

I did see that when it first came out, and did indeed see it in the Cinch video line up, but seeing all those times 'assumed' it was a dedicated video with all the cars on that list.

That was a great lap BTW.
Cars sounds magic!
Love all the telemetry!

Edit: Just watched the Cinch lap again (and now I see that the list is the league table!)

Sadly you can't see what mode he is in.

We must assume Sport mode, but will never know.

It looks like the traction control is off, but the flashing symbol might suggest it can't ever be truly off. (As stated by tester)

I wish he had started the test at 100%

A set of performance rubber would have took a couple of seconds (maybe more?) off that lap?

Great to see another Lotus owner on here - lovely car BTW and 'yota V6 sounds glorious. I think the cars compliment each other well, with one being completely analogue and one fully digital. I wouldn't want to track the X-Power as it just wouldn't be an enjoyable experience.

Completely agree with what you say though. We love our x-power as a daily commute - it's got stunning overtaking abilities and is comfortable & pretty refined and, usually for an EV, has a bit of character (unlike the Tesla model 3 we had before). But the shear weight, brakes and numb steering take it out of hot hatch category for me. Even with the great and instantaneous performance, on my 12 mile twisty B road commute, it wouldn't see which way the Elise (or our Fiesta Mk8 ST) had gone after the first few corners.

Off to Isle of Man next in the Elise with the SELOC crowd for the 6th year - great place to legally enjoy cars at proper speeds.

So, I guess the answer to the original question is, "Yes, plenty".

This is evidence of performance around a track. A tiny percentage of people take their cars on the track.

So, I agree if you plan track work, but then you should be thinking of a Caterham or something as that will be far more fun than any hot hatch (as you point out).

But for most people the real-world test that is relevant is cross-country driving and I suspect there the differences will be much more in the XPower's favour.

Well it's certainly not Black Taxi impressive, but it's yet to stop me manoeuvring anywhere.

Agreed though, the turning circle is not the best.

Good job the 435bhp makes up for it! ?

For it’s price and if your talking EV no at the moment nothing comes close ..
But
After owning mine and doing just under 10000kms in it now it has a lot of shortcomings mostly for cost and some just plain silly design ..

To say the X power is a one trick pony would be semi accurate it’s DAMN fast in a straight line that I personally don’t get tired of..

Every thing else is limited handling is so so with stock tyres, range is so so software is so so..
Is it a bad car hell no..
Is it as good as it could be hell no it needs a lot of refining but with that comes higher cost.

By no means has buying the X power been a disappointment to me it’s crazy cheap to run it’s fast and in general a great little family hatchback to drive spirited or just nicely around town

A true Ev hot hatch in my opinion is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 n (Which may be my next car) but is over double the price in Australia

Unless MG do something special with the next gen MG4 X power

Think I may be off topic, but indulge me anyway!

Had an Aston Martin Vanquish very confused from traffic lights up to NSL this afternoon. I made way for his ego in the left hand lane once past traffic and he duly flew past. He then severely cut me up and braked hard not very far in front, before accelerating again.

Think he might have been looking for further interaction, but we were off at the next junction. Plus I'm far too grown up. Kids in the back were upset though.

Definitely not a peer in price, badge snobbery rights, type of car, amount of seats, driveway kudos or much else it seems.

4.1 seconds 0-60 according to Google. Glacial!

******** M8! (Edit censor...Muppet M8!)

They are out there.

My tactic comes from the Medieval School of Monty Python.

"None Shall Pass"

You were right not to entertain him with kids in the car.

I dropped some numpty recently who had been using my car as a personal bonnet ornament for his car.

Not much winds me up these days, but that sort of thing does.
Anyway, single carriageway, roundabout and onto a dual carriageway.....
Left him in my dust (Vauxhall Corsa ?)

He eventually catches me up, overtakes, comes in front and bangs on the brakes!

As he came in I was already re overtaking the twonk.

The fact he banged on his brakes made him disappear even bloody quicker!!

Never saw him again.

Legend has it, he is still wondering what the hell happened!???

I'm starting to think a good chunk of it is the green bit on the license plate.

In fact can anyone here recall an all-EV situation as per the above?

Not that there won't be any idiots driving EV, more that I wonder if it's a red rag to some people?

I am not sure I have seen this on here before so just in case you haven't seen it.
(Caveat: It probably has. I'm just too wizened to remember)

What staggers me the most is that for every review where the reviewer doesn't like it, there is always another where they do.

I think it's OK looking at reviews for a guide or for stats but for goodness sake, whatever your looking at, get out there and drive it yourself.

It is only your opinion that is worth anything whatsoever.
