Mine is in tomorrow for new steering rack
Thank you for posting back @xichas .After one month and about 4000Km clicking has gone for good! Regards!
I had the same message from my MG dealer about replacing the whole steering column. How ever when I went to book the car in for the work, I got a VERY good deal on a Marvel R, so now I have changed the car, and guess what, problem solved.I notice most of the pictures on here show the pre-facelift model; I'm not sure my problem was exactly the same in my 2024 ZS EV Trophy. I had a clonk only when turning right, I haven't had the machine-gun type noises. Anyway, I took the car in to get it looked at (among other things) under warranty and they said it needed a replacement steering column. After several weeks waiting for the part it was finally done within a day a couple of weeks ago and happily the noise has now gone away.
you shouldn't need to do this with the vehicle under warrantyThank you for posting back @xichas .
The clicking / knocking had become very noticeable on our Gen 2 model for about the last 6 months now and the car is about 30 months old and covered 20,000 miles ( ish ).
It was the very similar situation on the previous Gen1 model we had, it started early when the car was only about 14 months old.
So, about 6 - 8 weeks ago I decided to check tighten the torque on the two main column securing bolts ( no fault found ) then, I increased the torque loading on the single 13mm nyloc nut on the back of drivers adjustment control arm ( the original valve was low and offered very little clamping effect TBH ).
This was about.......... 8 - 10 weeks ago now.
I can report, instantly the clicking / knocking stopped !.
After hearing / witnessing this on both models now, it was really easy to identify when it was not there anymore.
I guess the 99 Dollar question is :- Did it completely cure the noise ?.
Completely honest answer :- The improvement was 100 time better than prior to any adjustments.
But I "think" I have heard a very slight click, only on a couple of occasions, after carrying out the retightening process.
There is no doubt in my mind anyway, that in my case ( and maybe others ) that the problem does lie in the clamping arrangement.
If the column itself was completely defective, then IMHO no amount of check tightening would cure a condition like that, even on a temporary bases.
I intend to monitor the current situation closely in order to see if it develops / deteriorates and further.
If it remains in a stable state, then I may increase the load on the clamp once again at a later date.
In order to install a new steering column assembly it would be necessary to remove and refit the drivers clamping mechanism of course.
All of these fasteners would then require restoring to the original factory spec.
Is this why some customers have reported that the clicking has returned at a later date ????.
This is very true of course however, I hate having to wait weeks for an appointment, then the car is missing all day ( no loan car available ) then you have to wait for MG to authorise any replacement parts and the repair work, wait again for the parts to arrive, then another full day appointment to have the new parts installed etc etc.you shouldn't need to do this with the vehicle under warranty
We have an entire subforum devoted to it:Tell me more about the Marvel...
I think at this point they are only available in Europe.why no MG agents seem to sell them.
"The current Marvel R is sold in Europe as an MG, but was designed by Roewe – another car brand owned by MG's parent company SAIC – and is not manufactured in right-hand drive."Are they all Left Hand Drive?
Indeed, in fact, if the vehicle is under warranty and you undertake repairs yourself then you run the risk of the warranty being voidedyou shouldn't need to do this with the vehicle under warranty
