MG ZS Steering Fault - clicking when turning

As far as I'm concerned, no more clicks since my last intervention.
I'm still worried about hearing it again, but it's fine for now.
So it's been over a month.

It no longer makes a noise and didn’t cost me anything

Hi, My ZS EV Facelift had the exact same issue. Dropped it into MG, they investigated and replaced a component (in less than a week, no hassle). Clicking gone now and it certainly makes a difference in terms of enjoying driving the car. My advice is to take it to MG and tell them about the known 'clicking wheel' issue and if they can kindly fix it.

After one month and about 4000Km clicking has gone for good! Regards!
Thank you for posting back @xichas .
The clicking / knocking had become very noticeable on our Gen 2 model for about the last 6 months now and the car is about 30 months old and covered 20,000 miles ( ish ).
It was the very similar situation on the previous Gen1 model we had, it started early when the car was only about 14 months old.
So, about 6 - 8 weeks ago I decided to check tighten the torque on the two main column securing bolts ( no fault found ) then, I increased the torque loading on the single 13mm nyloc nut on the back of drivers adjustment control arm ( the original valve was low and offered very little clamping effect TBH ).
This was about.......... 8 - 10 weeks ago now.
I can report, instantly the clicking / knocking stopped !.
After hearing / witnessing this on both models now, it was really easy to identify when it was not there anymore.
I guess the 99 Dollar question is :- Did it completely cure the noise ?.
Completely honest answer :- The improvement was 100 time better than prior to any adjustments.
But I "think" I have heard a very slight click, only on a couple of occasions, after carrying out the retightening process.
There is no doubt in my mind anyway, that in my case ( and maybe others ) that the problem does lie in the clamping arrangement.
If the column itself was completely defective, then IMHO no amount of check tightening would cure a condition like that, even on a temporary bases.
I intend to monitor the current situation closely in order to see if it develops / deteriorates and further.
If it remains in a stable state, then I may increase the load on the clamp once again at a later date.
In order to install a new steering column assembly it would be necessary to remove and refit the drivers clamping mechanism of course.
All of these fasteners would then require restoring to the original factory spec.
Is this why some customers have reported that the clicking has returned at a later date ????.

So update on my replacement column. No clicks so great but I did notice that Autopilot did not work on the way home, thought it was just playing up as it sometimes does. However, it will not come on whenever I try it so will be ring garage up tomorrow

I notice most of the pictures on here show the pre-facelift model; I'm not sure my problem was exactly the same in my 2024 ZS EV Trophy. I had a clonk only when turning right, I haven't had the machine-gun type noises. Anyway, I took the car in to get it looked at (among other things) under warranty and they said it needed a replacement steering column. After several weeks waiting for the part it was finally done within a day a couple of weeks ago and happily the noise has now gone away.
I had the same message from my MG dealer about replacing the whole steering column. How ever when I went to book the car in for the work, I got a VERY good deal on a Marvel R, so now I have changed the car, and guess what, problem solved.

you shouldn't need to do this with the vehicle under warranty

This is very true of course however, I hate having to wait weeks for an appointment, then the car is missing all day ( no loan car available ) then you have to wait for MG to authorise any replacement parts and the repair work, wait again for the parts to arrive, then another full day appointment to have the new parts installed etc etc.
Now fingers tightly crossed that the original diagnosis was correct and that it does hopefully fix the problem.
Verses - 30 minutes of my own time ??.

Tell me more about the Marvel, I have never even seen one? Miles per charge, size etc?

Well yes Coulomb, but that does not tell me much about the difference between the ZS and the Marvel, nor why no MG agents seem to sell them. Looking at the ads, they look very similar spec, but better looking?

Ah, that explains it. But Australia population is about a third that of UK, so its not Australia that will persuade them to make RHD, more likely India!
