Hi all,

Hopefully you can advise.

My wife has just bought a second hand 23 plate trophy long range. She is still in her cooling off period.

I have an ev charger at home but the mg does not seem to want to charge correctly. It seems to want to randomly stop and start regardless of when I set it on the schedule in the car, and then randomly stops the charger if I let the charger decide the timings. I believe this issue is with the car and not the charger.

I have spotted on here that it could be update related. How do I tell if I have the most current software?

What chargers are you all using that are succesfully charging at given time slots for cheap tariff? Perhaps there is an incompatability.

Any other advise, or fixes? As if this goes on any longer she may dip out and return the car.

Hopefully you can help! ?

Only set a charging schedule on either the car or your home charger but not both.

The only software update you can easily check is for the central infotainment screen but not for any of the other systems that control the car.

There seems to be a CCU problem with some 23 plate Trophy cars (those without a rear wiper) where they won't charge using an AC charger but will with a fast DC charger. The fix is either a software update and/or a CCU replacement.

If you want to keep the car I'd ask the dealer to replace the CCU and do the software update. It might take a couple of visits as MG will make them do all sorts of tests before agreeing to replace the unit.

If the dealer is reluctant to sort the problem out or you think it's too much trouble return the car but do it ASAP.

I use an Easee One home charger and set all overnight (Economy 7) charging on the charger's app - I never set anything on the car other than switching between 80% and 100% charge depending on upcoming journeys. I have never had any problem with this.

Does your car keep the target battery level you set? Mine seems to have a tendency to reset to 100% on its own (but not on every charge.)

Thanks for the advice so far. My wife is going to ring the dealer and either return, or get them to extend the cooling off period whilst arranging repairs/replacement.

@IanMK, the car does seem to hold all settings including the schedule and max charge level. Which I know is not always the case.

As a bit of an update, I kept the car on scheduled charge, and then also put the charger in an app control state. I instructed the charger to only turn on between the low tariff hours. I also told it to turn itself back on if the car instructs the charger to turn off in this period.

Low and behold, it tried to turn itself off 3 times during this period but the charger kept turning back on and eventually the car shut itself off at the set limit. A dodgy workaround, and potentially not good for the car or charger, but it did get a full charge.

I THINK the CCU problem is actually the model year 2022 cars (phase 1, some of which were sold new in 2023) with the long range (NMC) batteries, which include both the Trophy and the SE LR.

I would clear any schedule in the car and set the schedule on the charger only.

Check to ensure the charging starts within 10mins of the set start time and completes when at set capacity...or schedule off time is exceeded.
