MG4 likes and dislikes We agree

The reading on my SR matched the reading on my charge point within 0.1 kW and my smart meter (allowing for my house's background usage) so I assumed that it was inverter in. But I have no proof that is the intention nor where the reading actually was.
I played with lowering the charge rate in the car and there was no indication of a loss in efficiency that you'd expect. Certainly efficiency in terms of charge gained was below the charge shown multiplied by time, but that would be expected whether measured as AC or DC.
Bugeyed, I have already been chastised on this forum re inverter....charger /converter ac to dc in, inverter dc battery to ac motor out....
Good to know about your reading as that showed almost no loss at the charger to the battery, measuring point within the car...who knows? Podpoint chargers local to myself are inconsistent, some you plug in and it's granny charger rate from 60% soc immediately and stays that way until you phone them, other don't deliver full 7kw ...seems their actual charger automated monitoring is not that advanced but I find they are becoming more consistent.

I've rarely got 7kW from PodPoint public chargers, particularly the destination ones that are subsidised.

I could be very wrong here but isn’t the rate of charge determined by the car I have noticed it the past when I have plug in to a 22kw charger you only get the same rate of charge as a so called 7 kw one and you don’t get 7 kw on the MG 5 ever because the on board charger is only around 6.5 on AC chargers and I think the MG4 is the same but as I said I could be wrong.

Les, the built in charger determines the rate as you state. Single phase is 7kw as you point out, three phase can handle 11kw. As per my discussion with bugeyed it would be good to know where the displayed input rate is measured from. Charger input or output? All I have read states loss at the car charger is 10 to 20%.

Edit this example is from a 64kw kia Niro
Efficiency = (Power used to charge/Power stored in battery) x 100 (%)
I charged the car from 18% power to 80% and this translates to 39.68kWh stored (62% x 64kW). However, the wall charger reported using 44.6kWh. Efficiency using the above equation it came out to 88.9% (44.6/39.68). Afterwards I charged from 80 to 100% and the efficiency dropped to 80% – it is more cost effective to charge to 80%!

What would also be good is if someone could measure home charger output in kw to added battery kw mid level on the car battery % as a rough guide. I.e you stick in 20kw measured at the charger what does the battery show has been added, 20, 18 or?

There are inconsistencies at ev public chargers so don't worry if some gives less that others as in the main it's the charger not the car that's responsible imo.

Well. Alan the thing i have noticed is on both off our cars only show battery percentage and not KWs and sometimes at home my Zappi might say 10 KWs delivered but the car percentage has only gone up around 12% gone in.
I work on 1kw beinging 2% mean100%= 50kw
But I will look at this more carefully in future what I do know is if I plug into an 11or 22 ac public Charing point it does not charge and quicker or put in anymore than a 7 kw would
Les

So I put it on a rapid AC charger.

Amdmad, I assume you have a 5 pin single phase input capability?

That would be 7.1 kw at input offering 1.6kwh in 14 minutes if I am reading the image correctly. That display is on the charger not the car. What difference was measured in the car?

Sounds a bit brand snobbering. Dont think reputation from ICE car brands applies to the EV(e.g I feel ID3 is crap). There isnt any particular EV brand is significant better than the rest.
Maybe it is abit of subconscious brand snobbery, but I feel it’s more that SIAC MG are still fairly new to the UK and haven’t been around for decades like European manufacturers.

I agree with the ID3 comment, interior wise it’s none better but the VW is several grand more !

It kept fluctuating from 2kw to 6 kw

Do you know what % was added during that period?

The car has this,is it 7Kw or 11Kw ??
11kw on 3 phase as pins L2&L3 are present for 2nd and 3rd phase. Needs a 3 phase cable as well.

EDIT: Also to get 7kw on single phase you need a 32 amp cable.
The type2 MG supply is a single phase 32amp so you won't get the full input from a 3phase on that btw

Have you got a 3 phase cable. Check L2 and L3 are present in cable. To get 11kw you need a 7 pin 3 phase cable.
Assuming you have a lr/ trophy with 61.7kw usable 1% is low in 14 minutes, should be nearer 1.6% but it depends on what % you started at. Above 80% slows down input....

Here's a link where you can select the cable type and see the price difference.

Edit: 3 phase cables with 32A are often advertised as 22kW, but the MG4 will not do more than 11kW and that is only achieved on the LR.

Also bear in mind an 11kw 3 phase (16amp) cable would only give 3.6kw on single phase (as it's likely muted to 16amp)

Yep MG are only supplying Single Phase Cables which is a shame, kept the 3 Phase cable from our EV6 and it works fine at 11kw on our Batch 2 MG4 Trophy
How does your MG4 compare against the EV6 which I've been told is a really nice EV.

The EV6 was fine, just a bit Mehhh. We had a low spec one so missing all the toys,

Its party trick of really fast charging was crippled when it was cold, and even after a year they had not rolled out the promised fix, ours was plagued by rattles from the back end the dealer could not fix, So for the price it was ok but nothing to write home about,

So far the the build quality of the MG4 seems as good and there are no rattles

Not done any really cold rapid charging in the MG4 but looking forward to trying the battery heating in the middle of winter,

The EV6 was great at V2L outputting 3.5Kw (We ran the house from it when at home), but the MG4 is beating that with 7kw output. which is really amazing.

I was not looking at the MG4 but our neighbour asked us to help him in buying one, and after seeing and trying his it jumped to the top of our list.

We like a smaller car as we work in Central London a lot and the EV6 was a bit of a barge getting into Westminster Parking Bays. The MG4 is a lot easier in that respect size wise and 360 camera wise.

Like any car the MG4 has issues I dont like, but on the whole its a nice package and gives the EV6 a run for its money as far as we are concerned

The Ev6 held its value spectacularly we walked away after 12 months and over 30k miles getting back in full what we paid for it, not sure the MG will be as good as that but if we can get away with less than £5k depreciation after a year and 40 to 50k miles will be very happy.

That sounds very promising. Although you probably don't have at your disposal the full suite of MG4 toys yet as some still require fixes.

Just taking a look "under the hood" though, it comes really well equipped and once (if) all issues fixed it will be really something.

Got a Camden Grey Trophy on order but the white is really growing on me. That black and white contrast is so sleek.

The EV6 certainly much bigger however looking at the exterior and size of the MG4, it's really surprising the extent to which the MSP makes the interior so roomy.

The missus hadn't seen it physically before tody and was something she actually picked on saying how roomy it seemed inside
