MG4 Software Update Thread

Aren't you concerned this could end up bricking your cars? Different markets have variations in hardware, and messing around with the software like this seems reckless and potentially dangerous.

I'm not sure we should be encouraging this kind of behavior by even discussing it on this forum.

I like that some People dare to do that.
Very interesting for those that have a bad garage.
My Lux is in the garage today for maintenance. And i had 20 + pop-ups from stuff through the app. So i hope I will have the latest version. I'll see tomorrow.

Greetings

As far is I know the "R" Version is just your Infotainment - so it doesn't matter to the acc behavior, right?

A very good point. Sorry I had two hours sleep last night and am intellectually compromised.

MG wrote to me today. I thought I would share these words which are in line with other reports "We are currently working on a new update that would allow the user to adjust the sensitivity of the lane Keep assist and other driver assistants."

People have been tweaking the software in cars ever since they went programable (even before by swapping out OEM ECUs for programable third-party devices).

My Golf R was extensively modified from factory, everything from cruise control, how the lights worked (you could control individual LEDs in each cluster!), to the gearbox and DSG. Oh for the availability of VCDS for the MG! Even my 2006 Honda S2000 I have tweaked the engine ECU a bit.

You’re absolutely right, but there’s a significant difference here. The tweaks you're referring to are typically done by "professionals" with expertise, but what I’m seeing in this thread is people randomly taking firmware from cars in other regions and uploading it to unsupported hardware without any testing or prior knowledge (YOLO, right?). This is a recipe for disaster.

That's possibly because we don't have the reverse camera on the SE in the UK ... I'm not even sure if the EU variants of the SE have one. So maybe the codebase doesn't include for it. ?‍♂️
In EU, there is a rear view camera on the SE version but only since MY2024.

The usb updates runs checks before loading so nothing major will happen as it just wouldn't load if it's not compatible

I can see why people do it, dealers aren't great with poor lead times & dismissal of issues without even looking at the cars

Majority of regions use the same software so that's even a non issue, the language & * hard drive is still correct after updating

If it rectifies faults that the dealer isn't sorting then what's the issue?

It isn't like people are saying you must do this, people are just saying I've done this, it worked well for me & I'm happy

Adjust sensitivity? I have had that from the beginning: less itchy, normal itchy, too itchy....

This is only the infotainment software, not something that affects safety critical systems. There are something like twenty ECUs all with their own firmware that do the low level work. Those are a whole different story.

We only find out what is possible when people experiment.

If they break something, it may be expensive for them to rectify, but it is their risk when experimenting.

I fixed my bootlid rattle which my dealer could not, because other people experimented with theirs.

Also how I knew how to fix my neighbours car when he had an issue where 3 garages couldn't because I had time to teach myself & experiment
I'm far from new to programming, configuring, updating, fixing cars

I think the first dealership tool I got was in 2008 which was a Tech2 for Saab but also worked with Vauxhall & Isuzu, from experimenting I found you could do stuff you shouldn't be able to & dealers said wasn't possible

The riskiest was BMW as you download & uploaded using one program & configured the files in another which was only in German & changed the way modules worked

With MG4 you're incredibly limited in what you can do, there's only one version available for each element, SIPS checks your car & compares it to a online database so the hardware issue you stated is less of an issue with the modules

If I did mess something up then it wouldn't be too much of an issue

I'm also used to working with large battery banks & 1kV DC 700V AC in my day job so EVs don't worry me

Now all that needs doing is for some talented person to get into file and copy one of the voice commands and update to include voice command that turns on/off LKA :)

Unfortunately unless you have MG'g signing key you can't as it'll know the update have been modified
