MG4 Trophy LR
Looking for some advice. I found a wireless Apple CarPlay adapter on Amazon for £27. Decent reviews and not too expensive so I went for it. It works like a dream when it’s connected, and the LEDs on it can be turned off so you can’t tell that it’s there. However, to get it to work each time you drive the car it has to be unplugged and plugged back in.

I wonder has anyone found a wireless CarPlay adapter that works with the MG4 trophy that works and connects/opens CarPlay once you start driving without the need to unplug and re plug.

TIA!

Thank you, it has a delay of 20 seconds already, does it need longer than this!? Doesn’t work at that length
Some people report delays up to 40 seconds. My Quadlock dongle works with 20 seconds, it might actually depend more on the individual car than your dongle.

Best way to establish how long it will need as a delay is to time your infotainment unit boot on a bad day, then add on a few seconds as a safety net, and set the wireless CarPlay for that delay.

My car for example sometimes fully boots within a couple of seconds, but on a bad day, it takes a good 25-30 to fully boot up.

I set my adapter to 40 seconds and it works every time. I could probably set it to 30 seconds and still be fine, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

I am just about to return the Carlinkit 5.0 because, despite putting a 20 second delay, it simply would not connect reliably. The issue seems to be that the Bluetooth element simply won't stay connected to my iPhone 14, it connects and then drops the Bluetooth connection. So I am forced to return the product and try another one - the HSTOP adapter will arrive in a few days. Here's hoping ! Any thoughts ?

If it is like Quadlock then it is supposed to do that. It only links up with your Bluetooth initially, then switches to a wifi connection with your phone. Try setting a longer delay instead, it seems 40 seconds is a better average for the delay.

Many thanks. It’s worth a try. However the problem occurs well after I start driving. I’ll come to a junction, the side camera will display what’s to my right (say) and then not revert to AirPlay but the Home Screen. The AirPlay “button “ will be greyed out meaning no connection. However, if I connect with a cable it’s flawless. Hence I conclude the device and yet so many excellent reviews for the product used with the MG4 !!

oooh okay, I get what you're saying now, I thought you noticed the Bluetooth connection dropping from your phone, I didn't realise the CarPlay itself actually cuts out.

Yes, that's the issue. The WiFi connection is solid but, despite that, the AirPlay connection to the Car drops. Again, using a cable it's flawless. Depending upon how the next unit fares (again, amazing reviews on Amazon), I may well just resign myself to a cabled connection :-(

I have had my connection drop a few times, just out of nowhere while driving. After like a minute tops it comes back on, I'm starting to suspect my phone though, as it did a similar thing on Bluetooth in my non-CarPlay car over the weekend. The phone just stopped playing for no reason.

Edit: It's an iPhone 15 Plus on iOS 18.1 (just updating now actually) maybe the update will fix something glitchy in the phone?

UPDATE : The HSTOP device arrived yesterday and, literally within seconds Apple Car Play was working on the screen. Ten minutes later (with the MG 4's ignition off), I tried again. This time, the car's display was alive within seconds which was too quick for the HSTOP. So I had to unplug and plug in again the unit, whereupon it worked.
This morning, after a night of inactivity, the HSTOP connected having waited the allocated 30 seconds for the MG 4 to boot up and, hey presto, all good. Next step is to try it on a longer journey. However, it appears a quality product which will hopefully be reliable.
