Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

I have received a reply from MG head office I told them I had an MG5 pre facelift 2021 and their reply is below.
Good afternoon,

Thank you for contacting MG Motors UK.

Tesla open their chargers to the public and It's up to the vehicle owner to download and use the Tesla apps to find out which chargers are available.

Tesla own their chargers and their infrastructure.

You can have an update done at your local MG dealership and it would be classed as a quality enhancement (you will need to pay for the labour.)

Please also note that this will not make the vehicle compatible with all Tesla charge points.

Only those which Tesla have chosen to open at any given time.

Kind regards,

Whilst technically not wrong, 3/4 of this reply from MG feels redundant as it’s true for all non-Tesla EVs.

Excellent, you are now the holder of the earliest upgradeable build date award. I'll add it to my list and thanks for posting this. It is all adding to the knowledge.
I wonder if there are any slight differences between these different versions of the EVCC.

I’ve seen up to 89kW charge rates at MFG (as has James from Cleevely on a YouTube video) but others don’t seem to have had more than 80kW. Not sure if it’s the network, EVCC version or just ideal conditions.

There might well be, trying to see if I can get the info through the OBD port at the moment. Not getting far at the moment. The EVCC gets data from all over the car to work out how the charging is negotiated and adjusted depending on if it is AC or DC. So variations may well play a part.

As for charge rates, you are right, it does depend on many factors.

The charge rate of 80+ is actually best described as a maximum rather than a constant as it will change over the charging time period. It is just good news that you have got it sorted.

I appreciate the conversation has moved on somewhat and now seems to mainly concern PFL models, but just a quick update that today I got my FL 23 Plate MG5 updated for Tesla Charging carried out FoC as part of the first service (and it works).
Luscombe's Leeds were the dealers.

Any pump in my petrol and subsequent diesel lifetimes could supply the motion lotion I desired so I’ll just enjoy driving using the wattage that works.
Not quite that straight forward, do you not remember unleaded fuel starrting and all of the issues with some vehicles that couldnt burn it?

If the other suppliers want to power my journeys they’ll need to cross to my side of the street and make it worth my while !!
Well, I think Tesla do make it worthwhile with their rapid charger dispensing the electrons at a very high rate and a very low price (as low as 30p at times). Does that not make it worth your while?

Well hopefully we have managed to solve this issue - despite MG UK and Mr Smart - and I’ve found a new dealer who can be trusted to be knowledgable and will listen.

Hopefully this solution will now filter out to all MG5 and MGZS drivers who can be helped.

Yeah the unleaded stuff never really affected me. My vehicle of that period was a company car so not my concern.
The Tesla thing might have sorted itself out in the intervening time as it appears the expensive part may not need changing after all ?

OK so 3rd service and mot today.

As things have progressed , booked it in 3 weeks ago, on MG's side since i booked it in i was intrigued how it would pan out.
The guy who i booked it in with greeted me with the "haven't got a clue about the Tesla/EVCC issue"

So fast forward to today.
Car serviced and passed the mot?
Went to collect it and before i paid, i asked if any updates were done/outstanding?
No.

Any enhanced updates available on your TRIP system?
No.

Now this time there was a mechanic and another servicing guy within arms length.

I said that there was enhanced update out, i thought i would play the route of i am willing to pay for this, and that Gary Smart has issued an email saying as much.

The mechanic said is it a ZS? as he has done a few of these lately.

How the hell can the service guy not know about the EVCC update if they are carrying out such work?

I said no its a MG5 SR.
So the service guy ( i know his name but lets keep it unbiased), said let me check the system.
I said the one you just said you checked?:ROFLMAO:

Lo and behold there's an enhanced update available.?

Again i said i'm sure mine is too old to update under warranty, i want to know the price for the greater goods knowledge.

Oh we would need to know what version/part number mine is - fair point, so i pulled out my phone and showed them the pic of mine. This didn't please the guy very much but the mechanic was interested.
I also reminded them that the info would be on the TRIP system and it again was in the email from Gary Smart, with part numbers, cost etc.

Anyway, i paid the bill and the service guy said would it be ok of he text me the cost once they have it, for fitting and coding. They wouldn't know how long off the top of their head it would take to fit.

I said 2 x bolts by the battery, i said i would remove the plastic cover if it helps them out.

I said all this in a polite manner, as no one likes a smart arse - especially if they are right.

So now i am waiting for the text with the price and any lead time for the part, just for reference.
Mine was version 10971602 - incase anyone was wondering - so not on the list of ones that have been updated for free as of yet.

Only distance to this garage is the reason i go, next year i may try my luck at Brindley Wolverhampton.

Thanks for the information it made me smile because when I received the email back from MG head office they said the mechanics are highly trained and are experts and they will tell you if it's updatable or not. Experts!!!! Seriously?

OK received the text with the cost.
So Miles kindly advised the price of the EVCC module on here of £229.71 + VAT, + fitting and coding.

So i receive a price for the module of £307.07 + VAT, + £189 inc vat to fit and code.
£557.45 inc VAT.

However, the part is unavailable at present.

Looks like a much larger mark up on the base price. If you went down this route it could be better to source the module elsewhere and get them to fit it albeit the fitting and coding charge seems extortionate too.

I doubt very much the dealer will fit and code a second hand part for fear if something goes wrong they’ll have to face the music…

Popped into Chorley MG Burnley today to see if they’d book my 4 month old MG5 FL in for the update (I brought it from the Chorley branch but Burnley is near work) and they said that as MG are now classing it as an enhancement it’s chargeable and approximately £117 for the time.

For the amount of times I’d actually use Tesla Chargers it’s not worth paying ?

I was talking about a genuine item from another dealer as they don't necessarily all charge the same.
