Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

Hi all, just to update on this as it's been a while. I had the car (MG5 LR pre-facelift early 22 plate) booked into Arnold Clark MG Edinburgh for May and showed up on the day to be told they didn't have a booking for me despite me phoning and booking it previously! Rather annoyed but they apologised and nothing I could do, so booked in for today. Took the car and got the update today, but have yet to test it works with Tesla charger as the nearest is 25 miles away. I asked for a copy of the software update that was applied but was told it gets sent to MG so I couldn't have a copy, which didn't make any sense. Currently no way of checking it's the right update and will have to wait to check until I'm near a Tesla charger and update here. It was all done under a recall according to Arnold Clark so no cost to me.

Update to say I got the latest update for the pre-FL MG5 LR free of charge and managed to test it at a Tesla charger the other weekend and it worked.

Whether the dealer charges you for it or not seems to depend on the dealer.

I have now used 8 Tesla superchargers in the UK, France, Belgium, Italy & Switzerland. All the older model.

Hmm so if my dealer charges 8 to 900 pounds to “upgrade “ my same model car it’s going to take a wee while to recoup the loss then ?

Let's say you save £15 on a Tesla visit (that may be optimistic), that would be 60 visits to break even. I've saved £15 typically but that's normally due the very high price of the competition, it has started to change.

Yes I’m thinking that’s optimistic and I don’t charge much away from home and rarely in Tesla charger country anyway.
I’ll see what they say when it’s in for MOT and 3rd service in a week or two.

Most Tesla upgrades are £60 - £90. Its only MG5 SR & ZS Mk1s that required the full costs EVCC unit.

If I typically saved 15 p/kWh then 400-600 kWh (1600-2400 miles) pays for the upgrade.

Do we know when the Tesla software update was first made available? I had my 2 year service a couple of weeks back and had been asking around dealers on the Tesla update and costs. At the garage I chose they said they would note 'charging issue" down on the works required which would allow them to do the Tesla update for free. When collecting the car I was told they looked at it and it was already done. I bought the car as ex demo from a dealer end September last year, so perhaps it was done before? I know the thing to do is go test it but I don't actually have any Tesla chargers particularly close. More FOMO than it making a tangible difference to my charging ?

Took my 72 reg FL MG5 into Holdcroft MG Cheshire Oaks yesterday for service, When booking the service I told the person on the phone that I wanted the update to use Tesla chargers, got to the dealers yesterday and was told that this was not a regular update and had been classed as an ‘enhancement’ by MG, I could have it done but it was chargeable, not sure how much they were going to charge as I tried arguing that it should be included but they were adamant , saying that it might not work anyway. Told them to leave it and not bother, just shows the inconsistency across the dealer network .

Perhaps if you had been able to mention that you'd think about having your service done elsewhere they might have changed thier mind. The update doesn't cost them anything, just some time hooked up in the workshop.

I will wait for the feedback form and tell them my thoughts, I wasn’t 100% happy with them for other reasons besides this issue so am thinking of going elsewhere next time anyway.

Mine was done for free (FL). It only showed on their system when the plugged the car in.

I've just spoken to the 'master technician' at Wilson's who was helpful. Apparently, the recall update done on my car was SC055 - I wish I'd thought to ask what that did. Anyhow, he's agreed that to fulfil my original request for Tesla compatibility, update SCO52 for the CCU and an update for the EVCC will be done (mine is EVCC-02 1313393). Although the updating process is quick, there's no nearby Tesla charging station for Wilson's to check it out. I said I'd do that myself and would soon report back if it didn't work! Unfortunately the earliest mutually convenient while-u-wait slot is 23rd September... so watch this space.

Wilson's updated the EVCC software free of charge - and washed the car. Yesterday, I took it to the Tesla Supercharger at Denbies, Dorking and it worked perfectly first time. I had also asked Wilson's to do the SC052 update but they misread it as SC055 and noted that it had already been done when the car was being serviced in June - so the 12V battery still isn't getting fully charged. Does anyone know what problem the SC055 update addresses?

I've found public chargers to be iffy too. For example, I stopped off at an Instavolt at 'Route 303' on the A303, stepped through a puddle to access the CCS plug and found that neither of the 2 CCS units would talk to the car. So I drove back 10 miles to an Osprey charging station at 'Stonemasons' which had worked fine on a previous occasion and found that neither of those would handshake either. In desperation, I located a single CCS charger at a Costa nearby and heaved a huge sigh of relief when it hummed into life on the first attempt; it was an Instavolt - just like the 2 that had failed 10 miles further along the A303! Needless to say it was also tipping down with rain with a howling wind...

I.just picked up a new MG5 yesterday. It is brand new. But I did notice that the tyres were dated 40th week of 2022...so I wonder how long it's been sitting around?!

Question is, should it be already programmed to use the Tesla chargers? Do I need to subscribe to Tesla somehow?
