VOTE TESLA SUPERCHARGES with MG5

Here what I was trying to do above but obviously got it wrong

Tesla Supercharger MG5
It appears there is a lot of confusion about the ability for the MG5 LR to have an update installed to enable the vehicle to be charged on open to all Tesla superchargers so I thought it might be good to to have the ballot below on the situation as it stands.

PFL, 2021, refused update on 19/11/24 basis of advice from MG apparently

Are you sure about that date? My recollection is that it was actually released considerably earlier than that.
Thanks for your reply. I'm very grateful as it nudged me into action. tl;dr - it works.

Not living anywhere near a Tesla SC and believing the software update I had done in Dec 23 hadn't included it I'd never actually tried one as I didn't want to waste time on a long journey. But last weekend I was staying near Cribbs Causeway in north Bristol so popped round to the Tesla chargers under the John Lewis car park. Charging worked first time, no hesitation, using the Tesla app which I'd previously set up. The next day on the way back along the A303 I stopped at Solstice Park and again, no problem charging from the open Tesla chargers at the Holiday Inn.
So, massive humble pie moment - it looks like the update in December had included the necessary update.
However, when I asked about the update as part of the MOT at another MG dealer a few months ago they said they couldn't apply it, but neither did they confirm that it had already been applied. So, as seems far too common, it looks like many dealers really don't know what they're doing, and this could be down to the somewhat opaque way that MG UK appears to communicate on this as much as local capability.

For the record, mine is a '71 LR
I can't find a way of checking the software version.

22 plate LR pre-face lift... Richmond Cars (Southampton) Ltd who have never heard of such a thing, in spite of promise to check with MG technical. When I returned, he said technical had intimated that if it was available it would show on the PC check for updates...

Waiting for my service plan to end as I'm up to Leeds often enough to get Luscombes to take over my servicing.

As an aside, does anyone know what they charge as a stand alone item? I'm not desperate for it as I don't get near a Tesla site often, but it would be nice to have the full package.

Non facelift LR 22 plate.
Bought last Thursday.
Tried Tesla charger over weekend - no joy.
Spoke to local dealer yesterday. Much humming and harring about compatible module or not. Have booked in for 7 Feb. Will be charged £90 weather or not compatible module. Upgrade module quoted £400 ish.

Keen to get Tesla charging working given the lower cost/KWh

Richmond Botley do know about it as I asked for the update and was told I need a new module and would get much change from £1000.

Is your service plan specifically with your dealer or with MG ? As a two time purchaser from Luscombes their good reputation is deserved and they are generally quite approachable. Why not call them ask about it and explain your situation, who knows they may be able to do the service work too.

Good point.

I think it's MG service plan. The dealer I bought the car from sold me a generic plan of their own which I cancelled once I realised. The company it was with cancelled with no problem and the lass I dealt with said they had a lot of mis-sold MG plans that they'd refunded on. Richmond, then sold me the kosher MG plan.

I'll be up in Leeds early February so I'll pop down and have a word...

No. I have been told (29/1/25):-
"We have been asked to do the tesla update
Due to the evcc on the car we can not do this
Only way we can is replace this part to make it applicable as per attached document
Part and labour £385.07
Also this is not a warranty issue"

Total borrocks. Seek another dealer.
Have you tried it yet on a Tesla Supercharger ?

I bought a new 74 plate trophy back in November it went back in 2 weeks later for the Tesla update free of charge when I realised it didn't have it on. The car only had to have a software update and no new parts. The guy at MG said the new face lift models are already to go apart from the software update.

Take a look at the part number on your EVCC.

I totally agree I can’t belive they are still delivering cars without the right software
Chuck as Gomev as said above go to a different dealer and if that’s not possible contact MG direct and tell them what you have been told.
Which dealer told you this rubbish bye the way.? Naming them here will warn others to avoid them.
Les

I got mine in Nov and was initially told £50 for the update pre-delivery but then they buggered me about over the order and I told them I wanted it for free, which they agreed to.

As documented elsewhere it didn't work so I took it in today and they have applied it and it now works. The service dept told me it is always chargeable and also showed me a doc from Aug where MG said the Tesla chargers had blocked MGs apart from the MG4. I think I've read about this here already but it obviously isn't true now, if it ever was.

It was "sort of" true. Tesla blocked everything that had the charging bug. The MG4 never had the bug so it didn't get blocked.

I paid BSM in Beaconsfield £50 for the Tesla fix on delivery for my MG5 FL Trophy in Dec but get errors ‘Electrical Grid abnormal’ charging at Wokingham and Uxbridge superchargers. Looks like they didn’t apply the fix correctly?

They definitely didn't do it. That is the message you get before the update is done.

According to the Tesla app there are no "open to all " superchargers in Wokingham and just one in Uxbridge, at Chippendale Ways, UB8 1QJ, so are you sure you tested your car at "the right place"?

By Wokingham he may mean the ones at Earley, which were the ones I tested at with my Dec 24 FL, also from Bristol St, and which didn't work. It went back to then on Thursday and now it works there.

My message was different to the one above btw. And I was assured it isn't a warranty item, and there is no obligation to do it during PDI.

Still - all's well that ends well :-)
