Would you buy an MG 4 again?

I think it's probably fairly rare for someone to buy exactly the same car again, if for no other reason than that if any length of time has elapsed, models and specifications move on. If there was no such thing as an EV it's quite likely I would have tried to buy another Golf GTi, but obviously it wouldn't have been a Mk6, not 14 years on. Although I have to say if someone had offered me a 2009 Mk6 with only 30K on the clock, I could have been sorely tempted.

I remember my father trading in his Ford Anglia for an almost identical one in the 1960s - he waited to see if I noticed that the number plate was different. I think the dealer got at him. I remember my business partner trading in his Vauxhall Senator for something extremely similar, and the same colour, in the 1990s or early 2000s. He had the number plate transferred as well. I got in the car to be taken to lunch and said "good grief have you had this valeted?" wondering how the valet had got rid of the cigar burns on the carpet. Then he fessed up.

So yes it happens.

But I was taking the question to be, if you were sent back in time to the day you decided to buy this MG4 you have now, in the same circumstances but knowing everything you now know about the car (and its competitors), would you buy, or do you wish you'd gone for something else.

Unless you’re looking to change ‘this week’ there’s going to be a plethora of new and exciting EVs coming into the market, to the point it would be baffling to go for the same again.
Maybe if you’re somewhere remote where the only dealer is brand X, I get that.
It’s the only reason a suzuki dealer near me survives, it sure as hell isn’t because suzuki make good cars….

Loads of different brands and dealers near me but once again when I am ready to change again e then it will be a similar process of looking at what is out there. Price, specifications and of course looking at the reviews of each vehicle and if it ends up being that the MG4 is still around and is within my price point and the specs are comparable with other brands and the reviews are better or equal to other brands in the same price and specifications range then I would buy another. But as you say there will be plenty of other EV’s available by then and no doubt they will all be worthy of consideration. I wasn’t intending changing this year but the PCP offer persuaded me to change this year but I had already got the MG4 earmarked as the current car I would be going for and I admit a lot of that was based on all the good reviews out there and the price.

I have made my decision and only time will tell what my next car will be after this one.

Market conditions will change and new cars will come onto the market too, competition will increase and prices will likely be more competitive as a result.
The car is good, but has faults, which MG are choosing to ignore. So if I could go back in time knowing what I know now.... I buy a lottery ticket.... and not an MG

I wasn't really in a position to hold fire. I had an insurance write-off on my hands. I was aware there was something "a bit too good to be true" about the price, and decided to take the risk. So far it's working well.

I know the dealer near me has had mixed reviews and they didn’t have the PCP offer I have signed up for. The dealer I am getting the car from has had good reviews on trust pilot but I haven’t drilled down into any details as to how much is sales and how much is after sales.

Well BYD seems to be competing with Tesla and not MG in the west, so the wish that the flood of Chinese cars will be cheap could just now be a pipe dream.

You’d have to define problems.
I don’t think there’s anyone on here who hasn’t had any problems, is there?
Most/all have had something, whether it be relatively small like screen issues or phones not linking, to bigger and more intrusive issues.

Well it could be that some haven’t had any problems so haven’t felt the need to voice anything where those that have are voicing concerns. It doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone is having problems. I am sure there are more members on here than the ones I see on having problems and some have said they are not having any problems. It’s just how many are to those that aren’t.

I appreciate you had issues but it doesn’t mean because you did every other owner has too.

I had 3 Priuses before the ZS (for my sins) each one an upgrade of the previous. I liked Toyotas and their dealers were great but they didn't have an EV out when I was ready to go full EV.
I tend to go for better or updated versions of the same car but with the ZS, I personally don't like the current model's front grill and the long waiting time killed it for me, so I went for the 4 as I wanted a longer range EV.
I will be looking at the next ZS (late 2024 ?) which looks like the 4 at the front or see what the next gen 4 has to offer.

The climate control is unpredictable (set to 23 and it still keeps the aircon on) and the screen flicker and freezes (radio and music froze for an hour on a long trip) from time to time. The garage has not been able to replace the head unit or fix any of the issues.

Am I alone on this and have a dud model or is this a common set of issues? Should I reject it and be done? Some help would be appreciated.

I think you have bought a lemon ..I've had no trouble with my mg4 trophy now done 5000 miles ??

I feel your pain my mg4 is in for rejection had the same issues as you but lots more faults locked inside,oil leak fixed 3 times still leaking,loss power,head unit going blank,same with aircon as you,boot leaking water inside,car not starting up correctly sometimes,think we got lemons as lots people have no issues at all. if you are willing to not have a car for a while then reject mine has been in for rejection for 10weeks so far.but I have bought another car Kia Niro ev which I am really happy with

I think they're crazy not to offer people who get stuck with lemons a brand new like-for-like replacement. They'd get to keep your money, and they'd get a car to go over and learn things from, and if it's really repairable to sell as a low-mileage used car. But no, it's always hassle and acrimony and dissatisfied customers defecting to other brands and (understandably) badmouthing the car.

They'd get to keep your money, and they'd get a car to go over and learn things from, and if it's really repairable to sell as a low-mileaga used car. I agree the car itself was a great drive but so many issues with mine having to reject it puts bad faith into the brand.the service has been nothing but dreadful customer service none existent.wouldn’t recommend mg or stoneacre to anybody in future

Yes I have rejected with finance company had a engineers report regarding leak just waiting for it to all go through.I wouldn’t ask for another mg4 at present maybe in 2 or 3 years time when the facelift model arrives maybe they have sorted the issues by then.rejecting is a very long process it’s been 11/12weeks so far nothing but a nightmare

Given that most people are not having deal-breaker issues, I'd have thought it was worth their while trying to keep the customer by giving them a replacement car. But it doesn't seem to be their thinking.

When the engineer company came to assess the vehicle they said there was so many rejections in for mg4s and mg cars in general it was out of control the biggest brand for rejections.this is no doubt going to effect mg as a brand in future.mg have been shocking customer service I have gave up and left it with finance firm to sort

Absolutely. They've currently lost my possible business. I agree that all makers produce lemons. How they deal with these problem cars is mission critical in my opinion. It seems that M.G have decided to take the " **** the customer" path.
