The MG4 SE 1100R33 Infotainment Thread

Had my second service done today - not particularly happy.

When booking it I asked them to sort the updates for the ACC as it shouldn't slow down by 6+mph when going round a gentle curve and asked them to update the infotainment to R33 as the AA voice directions don't work when listening to the radio, plus Bluetooth drop outs and regular black screen issues.

Arrived at the dealer to find that they were not going to do any software updates as the required technician wasn't in. If I wanted to book it in for 2 weeks time they would look at it but would charge me £170 if there was nothing wrong with it!

They asked for a payment of about £50 as my service plan payments didn't cover the cost of the service as I'm doing a bit more miles than they planned. Paid the £50 extra, cancelled the direct debit for the service plan and will try someone else for the next service.

If they want feedback they will get it....
Why let you book the car in for software updates when there is no technician available.

Do what I did and leave a review on Google.

It was impossible to get through on the phone to my local dealer and when you did they said they'd ring you back which never happened so I said as much on their Google review. Head office replied saying they would look into it and now they answer the phone.

Person spitting carpet tacks here. Despite me having told them forcefully at every available opportunity that I wanted R33, the car was still on R13 when I got it back. Vague excuses about MG servers being down, and they only do it if the customer has issues. I pointed out that I'd been screaming about the issues repeatedly. Allegedly someone is going to phone me on Monday to arrange to get the car in again to have it done. I am not a happy bunny, if for no other reason that nobody had the courtesy to tell me it wasn't done, just let me go out to the car and check, and return to the office fulminating.

In other news I do have the ACC update and it is better. The windscreen wipers are doing something odd that I have heard others mention. I don't yet know if the car will pre-heat while it's plugged in but not charging.
Interesting to hear that 'the servers are down' is a common issue. I took my MG4 in for yearly service and the servers were inconveniently down.

I took it in again for a minor repair and asked the dealer to perform the updates... and they just didn't do any.

My first service, the dealer said that there were some software updates for the car, and would try to do them as part of the service, but that they'd been having trouble earlier in the week with the servers. As I'd booked in a time slot for the service, I went to the cafe opposite for breakfast. When I told them this, they said they would keep my updated. I was sceptical, but the service manager did pop in to say service completed, and that they were in the process of installing the updates, and that the car would be ready soon.

There are some good dealers out there. This was A.E.Wilcox in Wickwar, South Gloucestershire.

That is very interesting as I could use A E.Wilcox for my next service.
Would you be happy to tell me what the service cost was.

I used Bristol North for my first service on the SE LR - £62.01 (March 2024) but I'm on low mileage.

I managed to convince them to do the infotainment software update but it was a bit of a battle with the receptionist and almost didn't happen - and I'd specifically booked with Bristol North because someone else on this forum had managed to get the infotainment update with them, while my previous efforts with Bath MG had ended in failure, and had said I wanted the infotainment updated as part of the service when I booked it. When you go in for the service they check your car's VIN against their system to see if it needs software updates, but those updates only relate to the main vehicle control software packages - the infotainment is separate from that and is not included in the check using the VIN - so whilst they might say that there's some software updates they're going to do for your car, infotainment is unlikely to be one of them.

To get the infotainment update, when you drop the car off you have to say that you're having trouble with bluetooth dropping off and (in my case) not getting Android Auto turn by turn directions or some other issues based on those reported here on the forum. But you also need a dealer with a technician that knows how to do the update (it's very quick and simple and done using a USB stick, unlike the main system software updates), and knows to check the MG servers for the latest infotainment version. From what I understand, the infotainment updates are not pushed out to or even flagged up to the dealers, so they often have no idea what the latest revision is. The best thing is to check on here for the latest infotainment revision for your vehicle model (R33 for the SE models currently I believe), and go in armed with that info and the list of infotainment 'issues' you've been having. When you collect the car after the service, be sure to check your infotainment has been updated before you drive off.

For car module updates they need to plug the car in to the laptop, not just check vs the VIN on MG's server. The latter method is known to overlook available updates (such as SCUK001 which is a mandatory update, and which also makes ACC a lot better).

OK - that's interesting to know, and probably why my vehicle missed out on the ACC update when it had its service - the VIN check said it didn't need any updates - and Bristol North clearly must not have done the plug in check on top of that. If it's a mandatory update, I could get it done at Bath MG then - they seem able to do the main system updates.

It is mandatory ... it is a SC - Service Campaign - update so should be done when the car is presented to a dealership for any sort of work (such as annual service).

Yes you are right about that. Despite asking for the sw to be updated, I was informed by Bristol North MG that they are only allowed to do the updates as instructed by MG. So as I have previously said, my SR SR infotainment still shows R13, same as when I bought it.

Having said that, I don't really have any adverse problems with it or the way the car drives. I have set LKA to the lowest and it stays there.

£114, which is higher than others have paid, but can't quibble on the customer service, and so much cheaper than my old ICE car.
Thank you for this. I believe the cost depends on the mileage and mine has just reached 5,000.

I don’t understand why servicing an MG4 is that expensive. Surely anything can be checked within half an hour at most, maybe even 15 minutes. It’s not an MOT and any problems would be addressed under warranty.
There are no fluids to change, it’s mostly a visual inspection.

Because dealerships like money.
It's not exclusive to MG dealers or EVs.
Less things to check means less money. Less things to go wrong means less money.
They want money.

Once the car is outside warranty, then feel free to take it to someone who's going to charge 50 quid to do a 10minute visual check.

(note, there are fluids to change, albeit not on first service)

Hi forum,
in a few days I will get my new MG4 SE/SR. It will be old model from 2022 without rear wiper, so probably it will require a lot of SW upgrades.

I went through update threads and found following recalls, campaigns, bulletins:
1100R33 - infotainment version
AS-220RC008 – recall for automatically lock
AS-TEC-07022024-01 – phantom breaking (AEB)
SC47-SC2023031001 – CCU
AS-22-TB053 – CCU, GW, IPK
AS-22-TB059 – LKA
AS-22-TB061 – BCM
SCUK001 – BCM, EVCC, FDR
SA022 - recall

Are you aware of any other SW upgrade?
What would you recommend to inspect during pickup?

I don't recognise SA022 recall ... the only recall in the UK has been RC008, but I see you are in Croatia so EU updates/recalls may be slightly different.

SCUK001 was only for the UK (I presume ... what with the UK part of the name). Perhaps there's a similar update for the EU.

Search this board for Checklist ... you'll find a thread identifying the key things to look for. :) (Or just look at the Wiki thread in this board ... the Checklist thread is linked in there).

Thank you @siteguru for quick replay.
I will follow checklist.

On top of that, I found 2 more campaigns / bulletins from Australia:
CMG4PMSW - OPD campaign
AS-TEC-02112023-01 - motor undertray bulge

I don't know if they are applicable for UK/EU

OPD only applies for AU/NZ cars (with rear wiper) which missed getting the OPD software included (as it should have been) - that won't apply to yours. And the undertray fix is only for AU/NZ so far.

OPD: Also in EU.
As it is in the UK. But I was referring specifically to the software update regarding OPD - early cars in AU/NZ were supplied without it even though the spec sheet said it should be there, so they released an update to add it in.

(Posts should be read in context, not in isolation). ;)

Just be aware that you cannot check any of the modules version number except for the infotainment as they are only visible to the dealer.
