Apple CarPlay

Before I used the wireless CarLinkit, I had constant trouble with Apple Carplay until I started using the shortest genuine Apple USB cable (50 cm). I probably went through eight or more other cables and none worked reliably, or at all.

With CarLinkit, it works reliably but does need some very specific settings made for this to happen. Wireless is just so much more convenient.
What are your very specific settings? We’re trying CarLink 2.0 air and it’s rubbish. Worse than a cable

It's been rock solid for me with the following settings:

I also disabled other connections to the car.

I had the same issue. Purchased this from Alixpress and haven’t had a problem since.! Also, set up for a 40 sec delay to allow everything on the car to do its thing. Worth every penny and the time to set it up.

Just found this amazing item on AliExpress. Check it out! £26.86 | Wireless Carplay Adapter Android Auto Wireless Smart Dongle 2in1 For Volvo Benz Audi Kia Hyundai VW Mazda Cadillac MG Peugeot
How do you set the 40 second delay?

Go into the IP address within the manual and theres an option to delay timings for connection.

Try this. Works perfectly. ??

Price goes up once you login and add tax. ?‍♂️

Still a decent price though. I've ordered that plus the ODB11 dongle from another thread in the XPower board. :)

Following on from my first post on this thread, my car had its first service yesterday at the MG dealership in Leicester.

I informed them about the issue with connecting my iPhone via Apple CarPlay, they said they will look into it.

On collecting the car, they gave it a clean bill of health and said they had updated the software for the sound system so shouldn’t have any further issues with Apple CarPlay.

When I got home I checked the infomat version number, and it is still R40.

Is it feasible to just update a certain part of the software and not the full system?

Time will tell if my iPhone connects to Apple CarPlay.

I understand one would expect to just use the CarPlay that comes with the car (and rightfully so) but I can recommend spending a bit of money on a wireless dongle, fixed any issue I had with the cable and just getting in the car and not having to touch your phone is really convenient

I got the wireless dongle but still have to reseat it every time you get in the car for it to kick in, otherwise the infotaintment system ignores it.

Have had issues where I have gone to the home button > vehicle changed modes and then back to carplay and it won't let you click into it. Again reseating the dongle sorts but very annoying.

Amazon.co.uk is the one I grabbed from another post here, perhaps its the dongle or I need to get a "delayed start" sort of USB..

Have a search online to see if you can get into the dongle settings, some dongles can be accessed through wifi on your phone, and then you go to their ip address. Perhaps you can change the delay in there.

Changing the delay is vital, the car is too busy upon startup to deal with CarPlay, and by the time the car is ready the dongle has timed out and stops trying to connect.

This is in the photos of the product you linked to. That’s how you would get into its settings, but you’ll have to see if there is a delay option in there.

Yeah, however seems its completely different SSID and IP as well as the settings just show "delayed" "Default, Mode 1, Mode 2" so I guess some trial and error. I may just get the AliExpress one on order and by the time it arrives return this one to amazon!

I've had my MG4 for a year now, and the biggest bugbear is Apple CarPlay, I still cannot get this to work without continued connection fails. I've tried the CarLink 5 wireless adaptor, which is what I initially thought the connection issue was. But it wasn’t. I've had the same issue with using Apple certified cable.

It's so annoying.

Last night, we must have plugged in and plugged out the cable x50 times, sometimes it wouldn’t pair at all, other times it would pair for a second or two, other times it would pair for 10-20 seconds and start playing music then drop out. ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGG

The car is booked in for 1st service next week, will it include a software update….. and will this fix the CarPlay glitch?

Anyone else have these ongoing issues?

Thanks.
I've just got a new iPhone 16 and I can't get Car Play to work at all. It used to work via the USB-A with my old iPhone 12, but this phone (which uses the USB-C output) is charging but not connecting to Car Play. I am using the Apple cable that came with the phone, but I can't get the Car Play icon on the MG4's screen to go black. It stays grey.

My son's car has Car Play via bluetooth. Does that work in the MG4 maybe? So I don't need to use a cable?

It'll work wirelessly if you buy a CarPlay dongle. (Plenty of links in this board).

Alternatively try buying an Anker USB A to USB C data cable ... that's what several others have tried and seems to work. Anecdotally the Apple cables don't seem to work for many people at all in the MG4.

ok, thanks

I have the IPhone 16 pro and due to the connection issues ive had (as per this thread) with my old iPhone 14 Pro Max i have gone back using my Carlink 5 wireless dongle. During the repairing/set-up i updated the Carlink firmware and increased the delay time from 20s to 40s and so far so good.

Apple CarPlay only works on the usb-A port of your MG4, so using a usb-c to usb-c cable will never work. It’s a bit annoying because as you mention the standard apple cable you get nowadays is usb-c to usb-c.

As mentioned by others, go wireless, it makes the whole function so much more enjoyable.

Really?! The USB-C port doesn’t work? Why ever not? (Rhetorical question - I’m not holding you responsible 😂)

Going wireless means having to spend £70 on a gizmo just because MG can’t make a port that works! F*** that!
