Tesla Charging Update, ZS EV, Free or Not Any Official Guide?

Hi and thank you for your post but can you please add

Year and model of your ZS I assume it’s a mk2 face lifted vehicle plus have you tried a Tesla unit since your software update ?
Les
So I have tried the car at a Tesla Supercharger, that is open to all, and to my surprise the car wont charge and I would get the " Unauthorized Vehicle" message in the Tesla app when I tried to start the charge. Tried a couple of the superchargers and all came back with same message... it appears they did the update during the service only in their dreams... I will have words with them on Monday.

When you say "on" do you mean in Ready mode (foot on brake) or accessories (no foot on brake)?

If in ready mode, then the car is capable of moving (if you put it in Drive or Reverse), therefore charging of any kind is not allowed in Ready mode.

If just with accessories on, I can't think how the Tesla or any other DC charger would know, unless the MG is responding differently for reasons that are not obvious to me.
In Ready mode but parked - so sounds like it needs to be 'no foot on brake' mode or off. But doesn't the ZS stop any drive mode being engaged when charging so Ready mode should still be OK?

Have you seen what @nuppar said in this thread:

1. Tested at Tesla Supercharger Luton and could not get it to work on any of 3 different chargers until, in frustration, turned the car off (but not locked of course) before plugging in Supercharger and started charge via app. Then got back in the car, turned it on and all worked fine.

try that?

Hi just reading the latest here I to had an issue at Luton with Tesla and my MG5 FL Trophy 2022. These are V4 units but are not fitted with card readers like some are so I couldn’t start a charge from the Tesla App which I always have been able to do on their V3 units so I to moved to another unit. But the same happened: after opening the Tesla App, choosing the charger, unable to start a charge then leaving the car plugged in I got back inside turned the car on and started the charge from my infotainment screen. In the battery section at the bottom of which there are icons to start and stop charging so pressed the start change icon and it started around one minute after once started switched off the car and head for the Mc Donald’s on the site. Hope this might be of some help to you ZS owners.

I wonder how many "open Tesla not charging" complaints are sorted out by something like @Les burrows or @nuppar describe ...

please share your experiences on how the charge started after the initial failure and please state your MG model/year and whether you tried and failed charging at more than one open tesla site.

Hi I had tried several times at different open Tesla points with no luck until I had my car software undate by Chorley MG but Luton was the only V4 I had used.

Are there Tesla chargers with card readers?

I've never seen one...

Yes some of the new V4 ones are fitted with card readers but some like the ones at Luton aren’t so you need to use the Tesla App. That was my finding at Luton, yet a Trentham which I have also used the V4 there had card readers fitted. If you want that or you can just use the Tesla app. No V3 units have card readers as far as I know.

Yes some off the new V4 ones are fitted with card readers

FleetNews website confirmed last year:

"Tesla has installed its first V4 Supercharger in the UK, which is designed to be used by electric vehicles from any brand.

The CCS compatible units are equipped with a contactless card payment facility and a three-metre tethered charging cable.

Charging speeds of up to 250kW are possible."

That’s correct but I can assure you the 16 at Luton which are V4s where not contactless
And had no card readers fitted when I used them at the end of March.

The Luton V4 were contactless and they took a £20 'test' deposit when I used my bank card which was later 'nulled' from my bank account after a few days of pending status. There was never an actual electric charge made as wouldnt work wirh my car if it was switched on (Ready mode).

I used the Tesla app in the end as this already had a payment option associated with my account. This also took a pending £20 deposit before later removing this and only billing me for the actual electric charge taken. But again would only work if my car was switched off before attaching charger, starting charge via app and then switching ZS LR 2024 on.

But it maybe that contactless will also work if the car is switched off before plugging in so 1. Car off 2. Plug in 3. Use contactless 4. Switch car on

Les, when trying to charge from the app, were you getting the "Unauthorised vehicle" message as well, when charging through app would fail?

Hi no I wasn’t it just wouldn’t start until I started it from my car screen once I did that it was no problem and from a very low SOC it ramped up to the mid 80s quickly.
Mines a MG5 FL Trophy model which as had the updates for Tesla done FOC. Thanks to Chorley MG.
But when I tried an open to all Tesla before the update I did have a similar message in the app.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but does anyone know a definitive date when the Tesla update for the MK2 became available to be applied? I want to follow this up with my dealer.

Same as others, I still get the "Unauthorized Vehicle" message when I try an open charger. My car was serviced in March and I would've expected the relevant EVCC update(s) to have been done. Have they got to look for it manually rather than the system just executing all current updates?

I cannot give you a definitive date but one evidential data point is that my Mk 2 was registered in March 2022 and has had no specific updates but works fine when charging with Tesla public chargers.

Fab - thank you! It gives me some kind of timeframe when it was working for others.
