Xpower as a hot hatch - cornering in particular

Agreed.
It's dire wet performance was the last push required to change out the stock items.

iam kinda lost now to which tyres to put on my X power ( at some point ) ..

My issue stems from ive used both michelin pilot sport 4 and the 5 tyres on my awd s60 and found that the 5s had better life span and handled just as good !!

Yet when i was at my local tyre shop the other day i mentioned fitting the 5s to my X power and the guy said no you need to go pilot sport 4s ( not 4S ) i asked why he explained they are stock equipment on telsa's and as such better suited to Ev's than the 5s ..

Not sure if this is sales bullsh.t or actual truth mind you the 4s are more expensive than the 5s here ATM ..

I've done 4000 miles on my MPS 5s and can highly recommend them.
Superb grip in the dry.
They give you the confidence to really lean on them in the bends.
Have never let go in the wet despite my best efforts.
I've seen no drop in efficiency either which is a bonus and much quieter than the Bridgestones.

You, (as I am sure you know) have only just scrubbed in your tyres at that mileage so could, (if you wanted) start leaning on them a bit more. Yes thats my intention, I have been having a think, I certainly dont want to fork out on new tyres, my mileage these days doesnt justify it. Plus unless...

My dealer fitted michelin e primacy to our X-Power as part of package to reduce vibrations. They have definitely helped, are much quieter and have more grip in the dry at least (haven’t tried them in the wet). They are around £160 a corner.

They are no pilot sports for sure (we have these on our fiesta ST) but massive improvement in all areas over the crap OEM tyres.

I have a question..

My reasoning is took my X power into the dealer to fix the navigation the other day at the same time i had them test drive the car for vibration the mechanic did mention that some of the older MG's from china ( from sitting on the slow boat from china ) developed slight flat spots on the tyres which caused vibrations..

At least they know the issue the mechanic drove so he knows that the issue is there

Going to set up changing wheels balancing wheels etc etc then if its still there escalate it to MG Australia !!

What was suggested was to test drive another X power if no issue change the wheels to mine and test it if not rebalance the wheels and test or put new wheels and tyres and test it ..

They will need it for a few days

Atleast the mechanic said yes there is a vibration there he could feel it!

My dealer changed the stock tyres to Michelin e-primacy in response to the vibration issue on ours - definitely improved the vibes and improved the ride & grip.

Push for the dealer to fit and supply new tyres.

In regards to 2wd vs 4wd. Eco is always RWD except in really extreme circumstances where I think traction control engages the front motor if tou start sliding. Normal is RWD mostly but when you put your foot down for some acceleration it always kicks the front motor in, Sport is continous 4WD. I've only ever got it to slide when in eco mode no matter how much I've pushed in sport, sport just seems to understeer and traction control all but cuts power.

For those who have managed to slide out on sport, what tyres were you using as I heard they changed the OEM ones at some point.

So far as my experience is concerned you are dot on - esc/tsc or whatever (even when turned off) will kill the power delivery. Stink.

Pushing on with Sport/4WD will understeer - lift off/trail braking then throttle when at apex should manage better…

At least on track it works…

My plan is to chew out the stock rubber and switch to pilot sport 5s.
100% i dont like the stock rubber BUT im of the opinion that i know they are crap so just be careful when trying to push it in the wet till they need to be replaced !!

kind of a waste to throw the stock tyres away when they are still usable !!

My take on the X-power's handling: I actually think it is very capable. The problem with the reviews of the X-power are for me that motor press tend to devide their staff up into categories and the Xpower tends to get reviewed by:

• EV focused reviewers that can't drive performance cars and tend to conclude their reviews with "you'd be better off getting a Trophy LR" when no self respecting motor journalist would review a Golf R and conclude that you'd be better saving your money and getting a TDI.
• Petrol head reviewers that don't know how to drive an EV and find the lack of pop and bang a bit boring.

It comes down to the X-power having few if any peers and there are some idiosyncratic elements to its handling which take a bit of getting used to, particularly if you've never driven a performance orientated EV.
Saying that, there are a few YouTube reviews from proper petrol heads that are very complimentary on its handling characteristics.
Personally I think the engineering team.that worked on the X-power have done a very good job on a platform that is in its infancy.
