Should I cancel my ZSEV order because of rising energy costs?

Didn't we all buy evs because they were green?
That's what is always top of the list in an ev - ice argument.

:rolleyes::ROFLMAO:

Not really…. Just wanted to save a bit of coin from the stupidly expensive cost of living we endure, not to mention pay cuts since 2010!!! And ongoing!

certainly does not seem that green when the cost of generating electric seems to come from gas and coal fired power plants. seems the greens have lost the argument about wind power, when we have went full on into generating power from wind and yet we are still paying the reliant cost of gas for or electric.

for me, the only Green idea of tax and supplements we pay on our bills, to create renewable energies, is an utter waste of time, and yet again costs the every day joe / Jane on the street, more and more and more, with currently zero benefit

Whats not been taken into account here is where the cost of fossil fuel is going to go when these energy increases come in ? The price per barrel might stabilize but production/distribution costs will increase massively

That’s my thoughts ,
fuel card prices have gone back up by 15ppl in the last 2 weeks and are going up again ?
I'm seriously looking at solar panels a battery bank

It takes an enormous amount of electricity to refine oil into its component parts, so as the cost of charging an EV goes up, the cost of fossil fuel will also increase.

As for why I bought an EV, I've always been fascinated by electric vehicles, and I wouldn't mind trying to do my bit to save the planet. :)

Blimey! Are we really going to be looking at £1/kWh by the new year :eek: I ran across this chaps YT video who has been doing research on the futures electricity market.

I'm now seriously having second thoughts as to whether changing to an EV will actually be the economical choice it was going to be!!
Looks like my electricity supplier is going to be charging 59p per Kwh . In 2021 I consumed 5273 kwh.
Total for this yr based on just the October rises( and we know ther'es going to be more) = £3275 ish for next yr . which equates to £273 per month
£399 for car plus home charging say twice a week lets say I put 50kwh in that's £59.
so around £240 per month.

Total £640 ish.

Does that look right llol ?

Amount I'm paying for my current ICE car £235 + Around £270 for fuel each month .
Total £505.

If those figures are right then I might possibly just as well continue my lease/pepper corn rental or buy my existing car out right, ( Which puts pay to all my arguments about not ever buying a car!)

Unless the Govt get it's finger out
You also need to factor in servicing and repair costs EV are much cheaper to service and there is far less to go wrong.
Plus the depreciation costs on an Ice vehicle is much higher than an EV my MG5 is worth now and I could get as much as I paid for it. It is now 18 months old with 16000 miles on it.
Plus the closer we get to 2030 when new ice cars will be no more, the more EVs will appreciate in value both new and 2nd hand I would think.
Les.

I just bought an EV because I like a quiet drive.
They're quiet, easy to drive and less stressful than manual ICE cars, I can't be doing with all that clutch and gearstick waggling.
Less wear on the old left knee.

We in Denmark are already there.

A few days ago the price topped out at £1.05 and please remember that this was even on a day where solar panels did theirs to help out a bit.

Honestly i dont think higher prices in the dead of winter on a cold, dark, windless day will be any lower than that.

Let us all hope for a mild winter, with lots of wind, and solar power.

Mild, because atleast here, the government have been heavily advocating for people with oil powered boilers go get heatpumps, and if the weather is really cold, they will draw heavily on the grid.

Not to mention the EV's :)

WoW! that's incredible over there in Denmark, We're in ridiculous scary times regards energy sources these days, We're retired & not using the MG ZS EV half as much as I used too just to keep the bills down. Octopus energy is wanting me to up the monthly DD by a further £120/month :eek: I asked them to show me the majic money tree & I'll gladly oblige. I've run the car down to 50% & i'm just using it for the shopping & hospital/doctors appointments approx one day per week at present everything else is public transport.

I have just done the figures for me. Currently we have 3 vehicles - Peugeot 3008 (derv) - 40MPG, Kia Rio (Derv) 60 MPG, Honda 125 scooter (petrol) 100 MPG.
Current fuel cost is Derv £1.817 per litre / Petrol £1.667 per litre.
Peugeot = 21p per mile
Kia = 14p per mile
Scooter = 8p per mile

Using an average of 0.3 kW per mile and predicted costs

Current electric cost 28p/kWh = 8.4p per mile.
October electric cost 52p/kWh = 15.6p per mile.
January electric cost (add 30%) 68p/kWh = 20p per mile.
April electric cost (add 14%) 78p/kWh = 23p per mile.

Electric Car is 3 year lease - taking to 2026.

What are predictions for petrol/derv costs over next year? According to the guardian they expect fuel to remain stable for the next 12 months.

In October it would be cheaper to take my Kia than electric.

In January (when we anticipate the ZS EV will finally arrive) the cost will be even.

April next year we will be worse off driving electric than our current Peugeot 3008.

Am thinking now we should go Petrol for next 3 years and see where we are in 3 years?

a really interesting piece of research, thanks for posting. I've just joined this group as I am considering ordering an mg 4 soon. Currently I seem to be getting around 41mpg in my Puma. so it looks like fuel economy isn't going to be top of the list when considering changing cars for me.

I'm still very interested in changing to an mg 4 though

Don’t believe the newspaper about fuel costs as fuel card costs have risen 12p at least in last 3 weeks
